Hey hey, it's Teacher Kaye!
Today, I talk about Autism, what it is and isn't -- some general information for those who may not be familiar with the disorder. Definition, characteristics, myths, and common misconceptions.
If you have a loved one who has been diagnosed with Autism, or is on the Autism Spectrum, I hope this video helps you understand what that could mean for the individual.
Next week, I'm bringing a friend along to talk about 6 Warning Signs that Your Child May Have Autism -- Abby, a fellow SLP, and sister of a person with Autism.
NOTE: Regarding the terminologies "person with autism" vs "autistic" -- this is my personal preference. I find the phrasing lovelier. However here's another perspective. Abby told me that at an Autism conference that she attended in Edinburgh, a trend revealed that there were those (mostly high-functioning individuals) that identified better with the term "autistic," because it was something that was a part of who they were and something that no one can take away from them. So after cultural norms are taken into account (Autism Society of the Philippines prefers "person with Autism" as well), it all boils down to what a person and his/her family are comfortable with. Abby has also pointed out reflectively that her family was never bothered by the term "autistic" in itself, because they've never used it offensively. So it all starts with a loving home 💕
SPECIAL THANKS to my friend and supporter, the artist who gifted me with a painting in the colors of Teacher Kaye Talks! Thanks, Lady! It fits right into my cozy spot 🧡 will get it framed after COVID 😓

Concerned about your child? Consider these next steps:
- consult your pedia if a referral to a Developmental Pedia is necessary,
- get in touch with me for an informal clinical impression.

Appreciating your teachings. My grandson has just been diagnosed with ASD and have been advised to seek help of speech therapist. But the unfortunate part is that in my country its very difficult to find one. So how can l do it at home. By the way he is 2years 10months old

Is there such a thing as, "it's never too late" with autism? Say parents were in denial when their child was young and now that she is an adult, they have finally accepted it. Is it too late to undergo therapy?

hello teacher kaye! may I ask po if ilang signs/symptoms ang kailangang makita bago ma-diagnosed na may autism. my son is 10 months old, he does excessive hand stimming like clapping, flapping, jumping since 5 months old, minsan tinutuktok din ulo nya. pero he is very attentive and has a strong eye contact. macoconsider na ba syang may autism nun
