I always love your videos but I somehow missed this one when it was first put out. I am a voice teacher and I always teach the ay vowel as a diphthong. Eh is the principal sound and ee is the vanishing sound. I find that most students like to spread to the ee sound rather than spend more time on the eh, so I get them to focus on opening the eh and saving the vanishing sound until the last second. Of course, one has to be careful that the eh is not overdone or allowed to drop back, but generally, this works well for me. I love the song Santa Fe and have taught it to a number of my young male singers. It was great to hear your take on it. Another one that does not have as many ays, but proves a challenge, is Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. Boys like to pull away and spread on "became their, last communion". I find that if they do not even think about the ee, and just open up the eh, that vanishing ee takes care of itself and the sound is beautiful and resonant. Anyway, that's my two cents. As I said, I always love hearing what you have to say.

Hey Justin! Thanks for this video! I have met a few teachers (especially SLS ones) who are against the 'ay' vowel out of fear that the students will pull chest and strain themselves - they always tell them to narrow it more to an 'iy'. The problem is, it does not give the same urgency - some songs just do not work without that bright, chesty 'ay'!

Have always struggled with AY (and Eh, which is the first half of the diphthong that is AY)...even when speaking. I lose compression and often have the note / word breakup. I'm now seeing that my tongue is positioned much more like AH (too flat). Focusing on getting the tongue up (more like EE), might be the thing I've been doing wrong.

Thank you for the video. I've noticed that sometimes 'ay' vowel sound more closer to 'ee' at the beginning of diphthong (and in that case it sounds more sharp) and sometimes it sounds closer to 'oh' or /ɜː/ as in LEARN. As non native speaker I don't understand which way is more correct... Maybe it depends on style or whatever? Can somebody help me with that question?

How can I cure vocal hoarseness sore throat and get rid of vocal neck jaw and throat and tongue tension and avoid strain because I want to fix that.
@TommyMedal
@TommyMedal 6 жыл бұрын
Start by working all of your spine-twisting muscles. Those are generally the most neglected if you live a sedentary lifestyle. If you don't get much use out of them, they will atrophy and make you feel tense, imbalanced, or unstable, throughout your body. Pretty common if you sat at school 6+ hours a day, 5 days a week, for most of your life. The best way (in my amateur opinion) to re-establish that posture, is by stretching, jogging, and working on your running posture. Good singing starts with coordinated nerves, and well-coordinated nerves start with balance
@NewYorkVocalCoaching
@NewYorkVocalCoaching 6 жыл бұрын
Great tips, TommyMedia! Good to work on the body as it is part of the vocal instrument. To answer her as well, you are probably using too many muscles to sing. Do you have a voice teacher now? -NYVC
