What I really appreciated in this episode, beside all the interesting stories, were two moments - Jake realizing that his "you learned a lesson here" remark made Wren quite angry and trying to word it differently, with more empathy. And Wren admitting later that he was a bit too defensive, feeling attacked, and also trying to find good intentions in his friends. These were good examples of respect you have for each other and active listening :)

The whole second section of this podcast (Tesla fiasco) is basically an argument for 'right to repair'. I 100% agree with the lawyer on this one, although asking a friend "what did you learn?" Isn't the best thing to say when your friend was in a car accident (and wasn't at fault) Tesla's are the iphones of the automotive industry. I love the idea of electric vehicles, but Tesla's parts department are not environmentally friendly.

I like Jake a lot, but I feel bad for Wren getting knocked on his ordeal. Already on top of the fact he’s at a loss financially and dealing with the loss of a car he really wanted. Wren: I just got rear ended. Not even my fault and i got screwed over by the insurance company despite have awesome coverage with them... Jake: Think Wren Think! But you better hope nothing ever breaks in that car or it would take a small fortune to repair!

They don't have more self driving features than other high end cars, only appear luxurious until you take a closer look, and only have a smaller carbon footprint (which is already a term coined by oil execs to shift the blame on to consumers) once they hit a high mile number which wren probably didn't hit because they're fragile

Jake's point is that owning a new technology like a Tesla car will bare a financial risk on you due to how expensive they are to repair at this moment compared to a conventional car. Wren wouldn't have been screwed by the insurance company had the car been more easily repairable.
@oneeye5893 жыл бұрын
@@TheChillMelodist but that’s my point. Wren had insurance to pay for his car being totaled. Doesn’t matter how new the car is, insurance companies screw EVERYONE over when your car gets totaled. Jake is saying the issue is with Wren having a Tesla, but that has 0 influence on how much he’s getting screwed over on his insurance.
@The_Curious_Cat3 жыл бұрын
@@TheChillMelodist But then why do they have an insurance plan that doesn't work if a Tesla gets totaled? What's the point of having insurance if it doesn't cover these type of accidents? And on top of that an accident where Wren wasn't at fault. It doesn't make any sense to me.
@SirWrender3 жыл бұрын
@@The_Curious_Cat I think you're misunderstanding how insurance works. First, I'm fine. I'm totally covered. Second, insurance is there to give you liquid value for what you lost, which means evaluating the value of the car at the time of loss. My car is not worth the same amount of money as when I bought it. My worry in this podcast was that the value dropped below the amount I still have yet to owe, which turned out to not be a problem at all. Honestly my insurance isn't screwing me over. I wouldn't call them generous, but acceptably fair. I'm more being screwed over by the circumstances of life. I was frustrated with Jake's take on that because he attributed it more specifically to being a Tesla and early adopter issue rather than a luck and marketplace issue.
@coletrain31623 жыл бұрын
Jake didn't seem to internalize that nothing about the situation was really preventable by Wren. If the impact had happened in any other spot in the car it probably would have been easily repairable, but it seems like bad luck that it hit the exact spot that caused a kinetic linkage throughout the car and deformed a bunch of internal structures.
@The_Curious_Cat3 жыл бұрын
@@brunolopez1990 My main question is: why doesn't the insurance of the guy that provoked the accident covers the cost? Especially when it wasn't Wren's fault? And if Tesla's are high to repair, why doesn't the insurance plan have that possibility covered? Because if he signs for an insurance plan, it's expecting he will be fine after an accident (financially speaking), especially when it's not his fault. If it was his fault, yeah, well, your fault you bought a Tesla and you bent the car beyond repair. But it's not his fault and still he's the one having the car unrepaired and sold at an auction.
@justinhaffenden3 жыл бұрын
@Curious_Cat Jake literally went over it though. The insurance companies havnt caught up to the electronic car push yet. Like he said it's still a fairly new phase and maybe down the line it will be better acknowledged. I agree with you whole heartedly about the BS insurance companies, but Wren should have known this going into it. He seems well informed on almost anything he talks about but now he seems so surprised about the end cost. I know Wren and his world view with Electric Cars, he's made that abundantly clear, but there are definitely cheaper options. Which is what I'm sure Jake was trying to say. Also about Jake. He's just that Brutally honest, realistic friend that you need to hear from when bad things happen in your life. It's fine to have people feel bad for you, and coddle you, but you need that offset of honesty or you might either never learn or consider similar situations in the future.
@The_Curious_Cat3 жыл бұрын
@@justinhaffenden Thanks for the reply! But the thing is, this has nothing to do with the technology itself (electric cars with batteries), but the construction of the Tesla, that is in a "sandwich" type thing to achieve rigidity at a lower cost. Considering this and considering it's possible to calculate the cost of repair by knowing the way it needs to be repaired, why isn't this covered by the plan in the insurance? That's the part that bugs me. About Jake being like that, both of them are voicing their opinions and they are friends, it happens. As long as they are respectful to each other and don't start firing shots just to try to make the other look bad "my opinion is better then yours" kind of thing. I understand what Jake was saying, but the way he was saying it was coming a bit off or misunderstood. Wren is not going to stop buying electric cars because of an accident, because like said above, it has nothing to do with the technology, it has to do with the way Tesla builds their cars and so, that's the thing Wren should consider if he buys a new Tesla.
@SirWrender3 жыл бұрын

There is literally no stock-built car made since 1980 or so that won't potentially have a frame issue like this, Great Grampa Jake! XD I totaled a Mitsubishi once by getting the bar on the side of the driver's seat across the window depressed an entire 0,5cm, after a trailer hit the car while it was parked. It couldn't be pulled back, on account of "aluminum", like you say. A friend rolled his car all the way around into a field, and had to repair the sides of chassis where the impact happened. "Learn from the experience" my arse. Yeah, would be great if life worked like that. If you want a Tesla today, ask around dealerships and try to get a floor model. We got a Model Y, same day, with 4k miles and 2k off the price. Also, if you want a more sporty tesla, get a 3, if you want more of a SUV/Crossover type driving, get the Y. The Instagram messages, hehe, those can be so tricky if you think too much about it. I did a Predator spoof on Shrimp Nick a month ago and posted on Instagram, and although I was expecting some kind of interaction for it (after all that's the whole point of making these spoofs and memes), I wasn't expecting Nick to repost it on his stories, which it was quite cool. And of course, I felt the need to reply to thank him for it. I had the same feeling that Niko had, that doubt on how do I reply? Polite and formal? "Hello Mr. Laurant, it's with the heart filled with joy that I thank you for reposting my story, I hope you have the most glorious day and sorry if my message bothered you in any way. Best regards". Chilled and relaxed? "sup dude, yo bro that was the coolest bro, thanks bro". lol In the end I just let it sit for a few hours and just replied without thinking much about it, it's the best way really. The other on that episode was Griffin replying to my story and the message going to the "requested" folder and I only noticed it like 5 days later. But that was one of those "oh damn... He now probably thinks I'm an idiot or something" kinda feelings. I guess I'll pay more attention next time. Sorry to hear about your car Wren. The whole insurance thing I have to say I don't understand why it's not covered by whoever provoked the accident. If it was your fault I would be "well, bad luck it hit that spot on the car", but it wasn't your fault so the insurances should find solutions for the problems. But I guess that's not how this works. (and I totally agree they should teach these things, along with how to do your taxes, in schools). Great podcast. Love hearing you guys share your experiences.

I'm with Wren here. To build at volume, Tesla does these single cast sections for efficiency but also safety. It may make the vehicle cheaper and save your life, but if the idiot behind you hits you wrong you might have to rebuild 1/3 of the car. I had a similar experience with a Toyota that was randomly crashed into on the street overnight, the body of the car was nearly folded in half when I visited it at the impound lot. Insurance zeroed out my loan, but I was out of a car.

I think it was more of a Tesla thing that he was laughing at than the fact that it was an electric car. Here's a problem with grading the way Jake suggests: It means there is little to no allowance for growth and learning during the course. It means your grade shows not how much you knew at the end of the course, but basically how much you knew at the beginning of it. If you begin without knowledge or ability, then you're going to make bad decisions at the beginning. That's the point of having courses in the first place: Not just test students to see how much their parents have taught them, but to add to their knowledge and then hopefully see growth. And if someone looks at this argument and says "but that's how regular grades work where I live. We get points on all assignments and tests during the year, and then those points are tallied up and the sum determines your grade"… Well, I'm sorry you live in a place where the grading system in general sucks. As a teacher, I'm VERY happy not to live in any of those places, because I'd absolutely hate grading that way. Easier for me? Yes, certainly. But fundamentally flawed if the goal is to generate learning and growth.

@justinhaffenden3 жыл бұрын
He's being honest and realistic. Believe it or not but he needed to hear it. We all need that one person who will be brutally honest. I'm pretty sure Jake was trying to tell Wren that he has a lot more cheaper options than a Tesla. Wren may like Tesla's but dam the amount of money you gotta throw into them , and now knowing the BS build design that only amounts to more money to fix...
@AlecFrancis3 жыл бұрын
@@justinhaffenden it's not about whether Tesla having a build that leads to shitty repairs. Wren clearly loved his car. And by no fault of his own, he lost it, and most likely won't get money back to replace it. Jake with a shit eating grin told Wren "I told you so" . That's a shitty friend thing to do . On top of that . Jake rebuilt a retro ford truck, put tons of hours into it. And I'm sure any bad car accident would lead to a similar result. He has no right to criticize Wren about car practicality.
@justinhaffenden3 жыл бұрын
@@AlecFrancis in no way did he even hint at "I told you so". He was trying to get Wren to realize his words, and that maybe he was wrong. Yea he may have been smiling, but whatever. Wren is fine though and obviously realized what Jake was saying. If Jake was such a jackass I'm sure Wren would have been a lot more upset with him. Or maybe you just took more offense than him?
@AlecFrancis3 жыл бұрын
@@justinhaffenden i guess we are interpreting Jake's attitude pretty differently. at 56:30 & 1:03:30 Jake does say I told you so. What he says and how he says it is so off base that Niko and Nick even call Jake out about being weirdly smug about it. Wren not losing his cool on a podcast does not mean Wren is not upset with Jake. Chewing each other out for being a dick on a podcast is not Corridor's style of content. i am not offended, I was just calling out Jake for being rude to his friend after something traumatic happened to him. It doesn't matter if Tesla's are bad at repairs, or expensive. It doesn't matter if Jake thinks Wren shouldn't buy another Tesla. Wren was genuinely sad, Niko and Nick listened and had some form of empathy. Jake didn't.
@justinhaffenden3 жыл бұрын
@@AlecFrancis that's true he did. I was so involved with trying to interpret the conversation that I missed some of it. I didn't feel like Jake was being smug though. I have friends who are like him too but they never bother me, and I'm sure there are tons of people who think the same. But again we need those kinds of friends sometimes. I wouldn't call Wren's situation or what happened to him even close to traumatic either. That's a bit of an overstatement I think. Sure it would suck, and even I would feel really shitty about it but it's not like he nearly died. He said himself he was perfectly ok. Anyways I just want Wren to learn from the situation though. Their are cheaper options that do exactly the same thing as Tesla.

Isn't the point of insurance that they pay you incase something happens to your car? Or is that just outside the US?

I agree with Jake, if a fender bender causes a car to be totaled it's fragile, no matter how safe it may be.

The only thing Wren should have learned from this is what "Gap insurance" is. He kind of blew past that like be didn't actually understand what that is. And yes Jake, I learned about Gap coverage the hard way

I love Jake but man, I get such whiplash whenever I realize how different my opinions are from his. Some of his takes really get me boiling but it's ok to disagree on these issues.
@justinhaffenden3 жыл бұрын
He's just realistic and brutally honest. Something I think everyone needs in their lives sooner or later. Wren should have gone with a cheaper option is all.
@csdiabo3 жыл бұрын
@@justinhaffenden I mean, not necessarily just realistic. He focused so much on the fact that it was hard to repair but didn't touch the fact that it's probably the safest car you could be in when something like that happens. It's not being realistic, it's just having a different opinion.
@SirWrender3 жыл бұрын
@@justinhaffenden Nah, saying whether I should or shouldn't have gone with a cheaper option is irrelevant. Obviously I could've just purchased a beater old used car. That would've been cheaper. This ignores all the implicit value that I believe my car brought to my life regardless of price. In this podcast I was just complaining that a situation, which was entirely out of my hands, has turned into a huge headache for me. At the time of recording I didn't know to what extent it would be a headache, and worried about potential fallout. Jake's take was just that "hah that's what you get for being an early adopter and getting a fancy car". Like... ok. That's a bummer take that I don't feel is fair or even true but ok. Whatever.
@gregswitala3 жыл бұрын
Wren, if you have a really bad headache, you can take Tylenol (acetaminophen) 325mg to 1000mg and Advil/Motrin (ibuprofen) 200mg to 800mg. They work differently and are safe to be taken in combination. Start with a small or medium amount but this is the best combo without using opioids.
