Life On The Hulls - Building a Cruising Catamaran Hello Ross, I would be delighted to offer my help on your project build. No pay required , just a chance to be crew. This has been my 50 year old dream . At age 7 my dad built a 40 ft piver victress trimaran at age 9 year of 1967,was the best year of my life.Grade 4 correspondence course on board Sea Shells and 1 full year sailing her. That boat was my baby...all the way until 1991. I was not on board at the time when my dad hit a reef and sank her.

My add on winches and noise is that working in a boat yard I have seen many attempts at silencing them and just plug you'r ears.The chain is going to be louder than the wench and you can do all kind's of stuff from rubber mount's to Sound proof boxes,You still have to mount it and the sound goes right through the bolt's.I learned to get over it and concentrate on strength. Love you'r video's and you have taught me a lot in fiberglass trick's just watching.

Well, your anchor winch won't have to handle a snubbing load - I assume you will have bridles for that , and you will go slow ahead to recover your anchor, so whatever works best for you in the way of a winch. Personally I would have a deck winch with a whipping drum just in case I needed to heave up on something, but that's just me. Coming on well now, brilliant.
@LifeOnTheHulls5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rog, I will likely have a horizontal windlass as it can be secured against the bulkhead and the forward facing wing frame for strength. Definitely using a bridle and snubbing chain and chain stop on this boat. All there to reduce issues going forward. Thanks for watching
@jacksbackable5 жыл бұрын
Drum winches are certainly becoming the preferred choice, and there are some advantages over the horizontal gypsy! My personal opinion is if you’re going to use all chain, which is the choice of most cruisers. I don’t think anyone believes that rope is going to last rubbing on a coral bommie overnight! Of course the amount of torque on the drum changes depending on the diameter of the wrap on the drum.
@ulyssesleslie58015 жыл бұрын
My thoughts on barrel winch / bulk head....situation (1) Your anchor is snagged on a reck or something....I would expect that there is a tension limit for shutdown to avoid disastrous damage to the Bulk head. Situation (2) Bottom conditions/ weeds,clay ,sand ,coral.... your correct type of anchor ups the chances of not dragging . Have more than 1 type of anchor aboard.... like 1 Danforth and 1 plow. Situation (3) Depth / wind strength / and ability to hold will determine how much rode you need. For your size of boat it is wise to have 30 feet of chain with 500 feet of anchor rope. This would be a good backup second option to include on board. Your spool ...holds what....40,50 feet of chain would work well in most cases for your first option. You would be surprised and thanking your lucky stars that your anchor Held ! It's a life and boat Save your.

As I've gotten older, I've made friends with solid knee pads from Bunnings - I don't know they'd work for your purposes, but the solid plastic blue ones with the foam backing mean I can work on my knees all day now, rather than like 30 minutes. I'm just using the $15 Protector Multipurposes knee pads. They're a little annoying when you first put them on and walk around, but honestly, it's a small price to pay to be able to do all those low jobs easily and at my leisure.

Really enjoying your progress. I’m assuming you are using Poly resin? Needing to some repairs on my rig and poly is a third of the price epoxy. What is your thoughts?
@LifeOnTheHulls5 жыл бұрын
Hey there , always use epoxy if you can , however this boat is a vinyl ester based craft and all tabbing and internal modules etc are of polyester and some epoxy where required. All production boats are typically once you get past the first three layers ( polyester ) , my entire hull is vinyl ester which is a superior matrix than polyester and is a modified epoxy, not prone to osmosis and share the same backbone as epoxy with a styrene carrier, that makes it easier to work with and shorter working times. That said , if you are doing external repairs on the hull that sits on the water permanently ie, on a mooring then use epoxies and epoxy barrier coast that will eliminate water absorption and osmosis issues. All the best Ross
@davidhanson32885 жыл бұрын
Have you tried wetting out multiple layers on plastic. Then placing it remove the plastic roll out the bubbles and peel ply .
@LifeOnTheHulls5 жыл бұрын
Don't mind that idea but very messy and with db I have no issue wetting out and can control the amount of resin I use better which I feel provides a stronger less resin heavy laminate. Peel ply deals with the excess as it is pushed through to the surface and removed on removal of the peel ply leaving a virgin finish

Hey Ross have you thought of doing electric motors with lithium ion batteries and a generator everyone is doing them nowadays.?
@LifeOnTheHulls5 жыл бұрын
Call me paranoid, but I like to be able to fix stuff in remote places, can quite come at the electric motor idea just yet, and although I did consider this I am boy at heart and I like engines and the ability to get diesel was too tempting, these new common rail machines are beautiful. Sadly I might regert it in twenty years but I will be an old codger by then probably letting someone else enjoy it, hopefully in any case. Ross

@@johntripp2028 That's a very good point, John, I will have a good length also so there will always be a pile as our intended cruising grounds , Raj ampat, Solomon Islands etc have very deep anchorages. Cheers and thanks for the advice .
