That took me back to when we constructed our 60' narrowboat from flat sheets of steel ourselves back in 1980, a dirty job cleaning steel off but so worth it. We have known Paul Barber a good number of years, he has built some amazing boats, very nice chap, you could not have selected a better person.

50 years ago I started painting/refinishing cabinets/ houses with my father and we had none of those tools! We used to have to use liquid stripper and what a mess that was. As Vic said, what brilliant inventions for getting that old paint off. Loads of fun to watch guys. Thanks very much;)

You're all doing a great job. That's the way to do it, take it down to the bare metal, fix it correctly, paint it and not have to worry about it for years. Yeah, I was on a submarine in the 70s and remember using the air-powered tool with the multiple metal rods on the end that vibrated the paint of the ship. Do you remember what it's called? I don't remember ever seeing a scabbler, however.

I believe they were pneumatic needle scalers and I only remember the other tool as a wheel deck grinder. Man were they noisy!

Hi Vic and Jo! Really enjoyed watching you prep your boat. Hard work, but great results. We as a family love every video you post:) A question though, did you have the paint tested for lead content? If not, you should still take some paint chips to get them tested. If it does report as lead paint, you yourselves should be blood tested for lead within thirty days. Wow! You two have really stepped up your game!!! I'm so proud of you! You might be millennial "snowflakes" but how many of us "baby" boomers can say they've ever scabbled? Not me but I did use that other tool with multiple metal rods coming out the end to remove paint from the hull when I was on a US Navy submarine in the 70s. Keep up the great work, you're such an inspiration! Holly is gonna look fantastic, I bet!

Amazing progress, so excited for you. Can't wait to see the paint going on. Wow. A new "Holly" will be coming out of her Chrysalis soon. What about the paint scraping for the bits around the being, under the roof outside the doors etc? Is that part of the process too? The doors and hatches will probably be getting new paint/touch up too? That #Scabbler looks to be an amazing tool for ripping off the old paint, it looks like it has been down for many years, just how long ago was "Holly" built and painted?

Really interesting to see the process - I've not seen or heard of a 'scabbler' before, must be one of those trade secrets you never hear about. Would grit blaster be an option for paint removal too? Big thumbs up.

Millennial snowflakes don’t get dirty and do hard work nor are able to remove rusty bent screws from deck seating or get their hands dirty with the grinding wheel or removing sticky window caulking… That’s not a snowflake in my belief… The gents look like they are doing a bang up job… Grinding ‘er down to bare metal… It’s good to start fresh with a clean surface, solid primer, and paint layers which will stand up to the test of time… Hopefully decades like Vic mentioned... The weed hatch is a door you can open to access the propeller. It lets you remove anything tangled around the prop or prop shaft without having to go swimming or take the boat out of the water.

what is the purpose of the "weed hatch", why are weeds in the boat?

It's the region near the propellor which when spinning through the seaweed and brush in the canal gets clogged up... It can cause the prop to become unbalanced or break apart... Props are not cheap... Hence why the weed hatch need to be cleaned often...
