in which we see how modeling supplies can be like adult toys and good old fashioned washi tape is still your best friend.

Great videos! I use Vallejo’s liquid mask for canopy’s after taping around the edges and it works great to fill in the big spots! I’ve had my bottle for almost a year now with no issues of it. Suggestion for application, I picked up some silicon paint brushes/clay sculpting brushes and it works great as an applicator! And the mask just comes right off the silicon so cleanup is literally 3 seconds.

Looking at the "pen"...I wonder if it's for making spots in paper that thin paints won't stick to? Says in the green that it's for "watercolor, inks and gauche".

Have you tried Micro Mask from Microscale? Looks like the Micro Set/Sol bottles. I think it works awesome. Dries more like plastic non-stretchy film instead of being like latex. Brush rinses easily with water and I've spray lacquers over this without issue. I tried masking a texture on the bottom of my Honda RA272 which has like a washboard texture and the stuff pulled right off. This was on top of primer too.

I use the solvent based Sol Neo and water based Sol R only on parts that are tough to mask with tape, especially on 1/12 scale motorcycles. For example the brake calipers that are moulded onto the forks. The stuff is also good to ensure that paint doesn’t leak into those taped parts. Liquid latex masks aren’t meant to replace the good ol’ tape. Just my 2 cents.

I wish I had watched this video before using that exact frisket. It definitely ruins brushes like you said. Luckily, I was able to save mine after soaking it several times for long periods of time.

Will Pattison: Interesting and informative video. As one who does both watercolors and some scale modeling, I wouldn't remotely consider using the Incredible White Mask compound on a model, save for special effects --- the product is designed primarily for watercolor paper, which, obviously, presents a quite different surface than what one would encounter in a model. It works well on paper and is easily removed with a rubber cement pick-up pad. The application is a little different as well since the masking compound doesn't bead up and can be controlled with an extremely fine brush. As you have noted, for a sharp, straight edge, masking tape is a better solution.

Actually I have a situation i am on right now that I need it on an open area. I have a ship that I am painting the American flag on and need to paint white stars on the superstructure. So wondering if this is the best choice given your experiment here? Thanks for the tips though because I was dreading using masking tape and totally spaced I had some mask fluid which would make this task a ton easier if i can get it to work right.

I get great results using the Pebeo masking fluid for masking canopies, but I don’t use it in the pen applicator, the bottled Pebeo has a blue tint to it.

Nice video. Thanks for sharing. When applying liquid mask I always use a silicon paintbrush. Otherwise the liquid mask will ruin the paintbrush.

I use Bitty Design liquid mask for polycarbonate rc bodies. The reason the your liquid mask isn't working is because your tearing the paint. When you paint over the mask, it creates one surface. You always have to cut the paint edge or at least have a scribe underneath the paint/mask joint.

If you absolutely feel you have to use masking fluid (you probably shouldn’t) then a rubber cement eraser from an art supply store is a somewhat less traumatic way of removing it.

Will...Thanks for the demo. I have been curious about using a masking fluid for some time but never got around to trying any of the available products. Now I wouldn't need to wste any money or time. I will just stick to my trusty masking tape, Keep up the great product testing for us!

I remember using the micro mask garbage when I was a kid being so excited about crisp canopy lines without using my Mom's scotch tape. What a fucking nightmarish derailment. I use Humbrol masking fluid which is much the same as your test liquid, but like using it mostly for spattering tonal variations with weathering techniques and in the middle of carefully taped canopies. I wonder if you made it dry to a semi-hard shell if it would work better? It's like working with spooge or Elmer's glue really.
@GryphonArmorer5 жыл бұрын
Alec F1 I made the mistake of buying the micro mask. I realized pretty quick I totally wasted my money. Then I did it again with the humbrol. At least the humbrol is worth it to fill in between washi tape and paint chipping. After watching this I will be using Mr hobby R for when the edge is critical.

Okay, commenting before I've finished with the video, but holy shit the pen is impossible to see(at least on video). I was hoping that maybe that would be easy to apply, but that doesn't do anything if you can't see it. They need some more color in it or something.
@GryphonArmorer5 жыл бұрын
Innocent_Bystander or create a separate diagram for where you put the pen crap. Or maybe just use the Mr hobby R.

Best use for masking fluids was mixing them with green/blue food coloring and brushing them on your toenails to get out of gym class.

Funny you should say that because decades ago as a 'young modeller' I in fact did use nail varnish as a masking fluid.

Will, your thesis is all well and good for the type of models you do, but you can’t use masking tape for all modeling applications. You kind of left that out.

I did a bit of fast forwarding, but it seems that your conclusion is the same as I already have myself. Masking fluids has limited uses, and most of them are quite useless... 😆 But thanks for doing these videos.

yeah man i think,this video is a little disingenuous the whole point of liquid mask is to use in combination with masking tape and ive had no issues with it
@barpfoto5 ай бұрын
Maybe you don't understand the definition of "disingenuous". The fact that you only see one use for masking fluid while others see multiple uses in no way makes this presentation dishonest.
