The Garrulus glandarius, commonly known as the Eurasian jay, is a medium-sized bird found across much of Europe and Asia. It is a member of the crow family, Corvidae, and is known for its striking plumage and loud, raucous call.
Eurasian jays are typically around 30-35cm in length, with a wingspan of around 55cm. They have distinctive plumage, with bright blue and black feathers on their wings, a pinkish-brown body, and a striking crest of feathers on their head. They have a long tail and a powerful, curved bill.
Eurasian jays are typically found in woodland areas, although they can also be found in urban environments. They are omnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of food, including insects, nuts, seeds, and even small mammals and reptiles.
Eurasian jays have a loud, harsh call, which is typically described as a "screeching" or "screaming" sound. They also have a range of other calls, including a softer "churring" sound and a more musical "bell-like" call.
In terms of behaviour, Eurasian jays are social birds and often form large flocks outside of the breeding season. They are known for their intelligence and problem-solving abilities and have been observed using tools to access food sources.
During the breeding season, Eurasian jays form monogamous pairs and both parents are involved in caring for the young. The female typically lays 4-6 eggs, which are incubated for around 16-19 days. The young are cared for in the nest for around 20-25 days before fledging.
Overall, the Garrulus glandarius Eurasian jay is a striking and intelligent bird, known for its distinctive plumage, loud call, and interesting behaviour’s. They typically inhabit woodland areas and are omnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of food. They form monogamous pairs during the breeding season and both parents are involved in caring for the young.
