Great job - very well done. One point, when setting bearing preload, you can hold off on putting the cone washers in till you get it where you want it, then put the cones in and assemble properly. This way if you need to add/subtract shims from top and bottom, you don't have to screw around with the cones. Be sure to double check preload once the cones are in.

Great video, but I'm wondering about the knuckle preload. The workshop manual for my BJ46 recommends 1,8-3,8 kg. Not 3-6 kg as mentioned in the video. That is far too much in my opinion. Another observation is that the the gasket next to the dust cover is on the outside of the cover, not on the inside between the dust shield and the knuckle spindle.

Best results using swivel hub centering gauge tool now available as aftermarket special service tool. Metal to metal surfaces do not seal . Any metal cased seals should be installed to oil grease free metal housings with a sealing compound for interference fits. (Not rubbish silicone sealer) This includes wheel bearing hub seals . Oil from grease leaks out . Metal to metal does not seal also usually gouges from screwdrivers etc during seal removal , metal cased seals can't seal the gap , oil leakage path. Swivel hub studs can be removed ( double nut them ) from housing and studs washed oil grease free install studs with thread locker , it will seal and stop the greases oil from dripping out . Dummy fit trunnion bearings and use centre gauge to check hub centered on axle housing and check preload , make any adjustments for correct centre and preload , when correct dismantle and clean shims , swivel hub shim surface and trunnion surface apply Loctite master gasket to shims , swivel hub , trunnion mating surfaces by doing this greases oil will not leak out of metal to metal surfaces . It's the little bit extra on the job that makes a massive difference to longevity of a repair or overhaul. Inner axle shaft Seals need to be installed to oil free housing with retaining compound or gear oil leaks in . Cv shaft must be centred in housing , great care must be used when installing axle shaft into inner axle shaft seal or it will be damaged from the Start . Bit of a ordinary design the inner axle shaft seal anyhow . Vent axle housing and transmissions to atmosphere using extended breather hoses up to high in engine bay , internal pressure from stuck breathers causes forceful leaks. Long live the 40 .

Really like the video. Just had a quick question with setting the preload on the knuckle. If it's either too tight or too loose and you have to remove or add shims, do you find that it is always best to do it on the bottom? Or should you try to do it at the top as well?

boxmat182ify, make sure you get a mechanical scale and not a digital one.
@boxmat182ify

Yeah I can do that, how come though?? What's your reasoning?? Thanks!
@scod3908
@scod3908 4 жыл бұрын
boxmat182ify, a mechanical one is easy to read when the measurement isn’t constant. The digital ones jump around a bit due to the averaging etc. Think of standing on a mechanical scale vs an electronic one - mechanical is instant but electronic takes a second or two to show the value.

Complete novice here! How come you knew to remove the bottom shims and not the top shims?
@40ChannelCruiser
@40ChannelCruiser 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Will, there is a OEM tool that you can use to find the center and can adjust the shims to suit. But if you don't own the tool I set it up so there is about the same shim thickness top and bottom, so in this case there was more on the bottom which is why I removed them. Hope this makes sense.
