Episode #4 of Bill's Retro Gaming PC Build & Modding Series!
Mnpctech's Bill Owen revisits Derek's PC Doodle Computer Repair Shop, 3600 Minnehaha Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55406. Visit his website here, www.pcdoodle.com
Derek has laser etched the custom PC case window that Bill made! It's now a tribute to the iconic hardware from Windows 98 and early 2000 era. Derek also shares his stealth RGB arduino lighting mod. This mod incorporates the original PC case badge from TranMicro as the switch! We play a game of Need for Speed "High Stakes" from 1999. The 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP really shows how it was the best performing video card for it's time. Next derek shares his bounty haul of vintage beige computers. Bill and Derek discover tape with actual build dates, but don't recall who made EP brand motherboards? "It was EPOX guys!"
Next Bill is invited by his friend Guido to pick-up his Gateway 2000 desktop PC he bought in 1998. The PC is in pristine condition. "It's a like a time capsule!" Guido shares all of the original Win98 software that he bought with the PC. Ever heard of the game G-POLICE or REDLINE Racer from the last 90s? Bill later remarks that he's never heard of these games, but they're a nice bonus! This is when Bill suggests the idea of "Beige PC Bounty Hunters" with a cartoon clip into. Is this a future video series for Retro PC gamers and Builders? Cashing in on finding rare Windows 98 era desktop PCs and hardware? Maybe???
Bill finally shares the first wave of your retro computer photos from 1995 - 2005 submitted from across the PC hardware community. Here are the community forums if you would like to submit and post your own photos for a future episode of Bill's retro gaming PC series, "Mod like it's 1999"

Oh man, this makes me happy , the most retro thing I have left is an antec 900 with a gigabyte 775 and an 6850....one agp card survived lol... I lost all my old ide drives , old cases , psus , and all my modding tools in the camp fire in California.. but seeing stuff like this keeps me smiling, still have some i386 dx CPUs left tho

First of all, that switch is genius! Second even tho I don't know the other games besides NFS, they all looked great.. looked like they run smooth as silk and honestly still looked FUN! I'm jealous! Lastly it brought back so many memories, first of getting to play Counter Strike at a buddy's house back in 00', I wouldn't sleep at all when I stayed over and just played all night, it blew my mind... it was like GoldenEye with 32 players (so amazing for the time!). That game eventually got me into PC's in 05', a different friend who I thought knew it all didn't know PCI-e was faster than AGP so I ended up spending a small fortune on a dinosaur to play CS Source (screw the haters Source and the community around it was awesome). From that I gained enough knowledge to build on my own and never looked back. Sadly it's all just a memory now, I don't have any parts/pictures of the original build which was: Asus P5PE-VM (this model number is burned into my brain lol) Corsair DDR2 2x1gb PNY 7600GS AGP P4 3ghz

I remember when I got my first trinitron monitor and it was as deep as the computer desk. Like a long surfboard lol. My late 1990's video game series was Commandos. Then Baldurs Gate Series and the other blackisle games and of course Fallout. The X-Wing series was a very popular 90's pc series as well from early 90s to late. Think X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter was around 97/98 even had multiplayer. 1st multiplayer LAN game I played was Marathon on the Mac haha. 1st Dos multiplayer lan game was Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. 1st real multiplayer was Quake on Windows 95 rocking a T1 internet connection. Think the 1st black case I ever seen was on a Dell Dimension might have had a little grey/silver in it then they converted their corporate line over to black so all of their optiplex pizza boxes.

By 2001 I had built quite a few PC's and unfortunately high temps was never an issue. You needed a ton of money to buy the premium builds. Lol I used to have a house full of fellow nerds every Tues eve for "GAMES NIGHT". Doom and Unreal tournament were always the top pics..

Yes, builds cost fortune back then, consider a decent case like a cheiftec/chenming dragon was at least $149, if it was on sale, today, the gpu and liquid cooling components consume most of my budget, but you can get really decent cases for $60, thanks for watching, B @ mnpctech.com/

@@Mnpctech_Giveaway_PC_Mods lol glad you saw my comment. I got a bit smarter moddding the second case. I used a Dremel and only took 20 minutes lol. Back then I didn't see many people do that and my friends at work thought I was crazy but after it was finished, they ended up doing the same thing. Also my friend and I here at work (company we work for) were making the LED dislplays for the Good Year Blimp and someone messed up a whackton of blue LEDs sanded the lenses instead of the PCB lol. My friend and I snagged them up and used them every were we could. I put them in my PC (power and HDD lights), my dashboard in my car, made light strips. It was a fun time for modding what ever we could. Then a few years later every PC out there had blue lights.

Nice, I'm still looking for a case for a Dell dimension 4600 rebuild/upgrade as the case was damaged really bad when I found it at the recycle drop off, but sadly I don't have any photos of my old builds from back the day, as being a high school kid I did not think to record those memories on film or even my early digital camera.

Seeing this makes me regret selling my old DFI LanParty Socket A motherboard. Putting that in my old beige Antec SX 1040 case with it's original Antec PP412X psu (both of which I still have). Mod in a side window, add some UV reactive fans and rounded cables, some UV lights, and whatever other beige accessorizes I can scrounge up and be back in the early 2000s.

Are you interested in the "sleeper PC" thing, or is this geared to mainly just original hardware? Cool vid regardless. I still play NFS 4 lol. For me it was the last good game in the series. EA killed the modding support after that release, which effectively killed my interest in it.
