The Lian Li Aquarium PC Case from 2003

This is a Lian Li PC-6010 aluminum ATX tower case from 2003, but with the optional $99 fish tank side panel! It holds water, pebbles, plastic fish, and a bubbly pipe thing to get things moving. Yes, that means there's an air pump inside, right next to the IDE hard drive and PCI expansion cards. And it is precisely as loud and vibration-inducing as you'd expect.

I'd likely get in line too, especially if they used a slightly heavier duty pump designed for something non-conductive like mineral oil or silicone oil. Wouldn't evaporate like water will, and won't cause as much damage if a leak develops or one of the hoses comes loose.

As both an avid fish collector and pc user, I know there are many aquarium pumps on the market today that are very soft or even close to silent with little to no vibration. I have one on my 35 gal front bow aquarium and the only thing I hear is the filter putting water back into the tank. Its a step up from one 20 years ago. Might be an idea. I don't know.

I just got a Lian Li LANCOOL II Mesh Performance Mid-Tower Case. I love it, but it's the first time in years I've had to plan a build, because there's so much cable management and customization in the design. Damn this looks so awesome! The whole design idea is so creative and unique - being an aquarium enthusiast myself, I would have loved having a setup like this. But I would also be a bit worried about the effect those vibrations from the air pump could have on the hardware in the long term, those pumps can be really obnoxious. Otherwise, I think it is pretty brilliant and the whole aquarium lighting effect with the fishies moving around in the water is awesome.

Also Lian Li then: Expensive aluminium cases! Seriously, the Lian Li cases were at least double the price of a nice Antec steel case or something like it. At least here in Sweden they were, also i was a teenager and the case was near the bottom of the list of priorities. The CPU, the GPU and the memory were at the top of the list, after that the hard drive and the PSU. The case was whatever would fit the other components cheaply and with at least an 80mm intake and an 80mm exhaust fan.

Stuff like this, the whole aquatic beachside aesthetics, or sometimes even the color aqua blue in general give me serious nostalgic vibes of being a little kid in the early 2000’s. I remember having one of those little plastic fish tank thingies where it was kind of something like this: Little plastic fish that “swim” around the tank like a normal fish tank. I even remember there being a Finding Nemo version. I wonder if Spongebob and Finding Nemo played a huge role in the popularity of the whole aquarium/sea creature trend of this time period.

I like the sliding part where the motherboard is placed because that on a modern case would make assembling or disassembling a lot easier.
