Sail Cloudy Bay

Sail Cloudy Bay

Күн бұрын

After 10 days in Bermuda, the weather window appeared and s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) departs on the sailing adventure to Antigua. During this sailing trip we completed 948 nm, and it took us 5 days 3 hours, averaging 7.7kts
As weather went, we had the tail end of a big low pressure system on the first day, with strong but decreasing winds and big seas. On the second day we crossed the high-pressure transition zone to the trade winds, motoring for 16 hours. The wind came back in on our port quarter, gentle at first, but then increased and sprung east, ending up forward of the beam. And this is how we spent the last 3 days, on a port tack fetch (on apparent wind) and into the increasing easterly swell. We pushed Cloudy Bay fairly hard through the waves giving us a rather hard but thrilling ride.
The sea calmed down in the lee of Barbuda at dawn on the last day, then arrived into the turquoise water of Jolly Harbour, Antigua at noon. Good to be back here, after our 6 month detour sailing east coast USA. 30 Nov - 5 Dec 2018

Thank you so much for this memorizing sailing video. ! One hour of just magical beauty of your HR 54 powering through the ocean. No music distraction. I don't know if every viewer will enjoy an hour of this, but as a sailor - this is what I write the checks for - that magic of parting the waves, and listening to the hiss of the wake. There is nothing like a powerful mono-hull in the groove upwind. Well done.

@@SailCloudyBay Thank you for the reply, my settings were/are correct and i watched it again in HD this morning. must be my ISP. Enjoyed it immensely and fully appreciate your work. Have unsubscribed from quite a few of the "pretend" sailors. Watching a Catamaran sail at 18 knots with a double reef, in what was a relatively calm sea state was the last straw for me with one channel (GWTW) and (LV) monetizing their pregnancy finally broke my resolve. You are both REAL Sailors. Have a great Christmas.

So glad you managed to see it in full HD. apparently the sailing shots are quite something on a big screen (which we dont have). And thanks for the encouraging comments. Rob, We are sailors and we love making videos for other sailors to enjoy. And yes, we also love to push the boat to its full potential. As an HR, we know she can take it ... and more. It is a rare treat indeed to be able to enjoy long stretches of sailing in a boat of the ideal size and perfect weather for ploughing and surfing and slicing the waves without the relaxing sounds of wind and waves in the background. And from the comfort of home. As close as you can get to the real thing. Many thanks.

Wishing you guys a very happy new year 2019 in just a few hours wherever you are today, I'm here sitting enjoying a rum Don Q on the rocks and ran across this video. In 15 years of watching Utube videos of this nature, I've never found one that is so real and relaxing as this one. It really took me way back to when I had my sailboat in San Francisco Bay for 15 years, and before that, I cruised in the Caribbean aboard a 54' ketch with a friend. Your video is simply magnificent! I felt every bit of the boat movement, all the noises took me so many places, and I've watched only half and had to stop to write this. It is also great that there is no silly talk, no music, and truly if you are isolated like me right now (my office is noise proof) then you can really get into the daily routine of the boat. Also, the shots were crazy, especially the shots from the back towards the front with the bow breaking into the waves were epic. The shots from the top of the mast were also great. Overall, this is the #1 video I've ever watched. It calmed me down to a ridiculous heart rate, and I felt totally at peace. 20 years ago I fell from the mast and broke my back and subsequently had to sell my last sailboat, so now I only have my Goldwing motorcycle to entertain me. I can read from the comments that everybody loves the video as I did. I subscribed.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 5 жыл бұрын
What a wonderful comment. Thanks so much for taking the time to express all that. You warmed our hearts. So very sorry for you accident - that must have been tragic for you. Going up the mast is one of the few things that we really take very seriously when it comes to safety. There would be no going back from falling from the top ... as you know. Enjoy your Goldwing. We are have a small HD Sportster back in Bucharest (Horris the Hog) which we love around town, but we really want a good touring bike for out of town .... and there is no better bike than the Goldwing. Wishing you also a great 2019 ... happy biking and happy watching us sailing :) there will be alot more videos to come. And if you really like the sailing ones, try our video "Antigua to USA", back in June or "sailing St.Lucia to Dominica" in April. Those had good sailing shots too. Enjoy the rest of the video

Thanks for the comment Christian. Glad you enjoy the sailing. On the wind noise protection we have experimented in many ways to improve this and found the best is what we have - small fluffies around each of the 3 microphones. We also have an external mic setup that is slightly better, but that is not waterproof. We will keep trying to improve this. On the other hand we do want to hear some of the natural wind noise.

Fantastic vid again (thanks Oana though you had to suffer through it 🤢😉) and what a great sail!!! Cloudy sure performs when she is pushed and handled like you do and you caught it camera 👍👍 An hour worth watching! Not sure you agree but the time just before sunrise is the best at sea ... so beautiful (together with the sounds of the water against the hull hehe). Thanks again for a great comment. Its really unfortunate that Oana gets sea sick on this angle of sailing, because for me its the best thrill. But I've got to give it to her, she doesn't run as soon as we hot port! Yes, totally agree about that time of day. Day 3 started like that, just as the trade winds started to kick in. The moon rose, then the dawn. With that amazing light in the sky and sail. Magic. Yes, lovely and warm here. I love your videos with all the emphasis on sailing. I may have missed it but have you done a video (or can you do a video) about your solar/generator/alternator power production. I am most interested in your tilting panels (how many watts, likes/dislikes) and whether you have thought of adding hard panels above/across your davits like many monohulls have. I assume you rely more on your generator but would love to hear your thoughts on that as well. Thanks!

Glad you like the videos and thanks for the comment. Solar is OK (2 x 220watt panels) but only really ever acts as a top up. Even in the brightest day they will only just keep up with the fridge/freezer drain. But its good to come back to the boat in the evening and find the % charge is still the same as it was in the morning. We contemplated other solar panels but between the davits they are ugly plus difficult to use the passerelle; on top of the bimini OK, but then when we cover with the over boom sunshade at anchor they would be useless; on the decks an absolute no-no. So we configured as such on the rail and neatly fed the power lines through the metal tubing. We did have to extend the pushpit to fit them, but this also makes the stern area feel much safer vs the life-lines. On batteries we have 2 x 5000ah Mastervolt Li-Ions. Absolutely fantastic. Main benefit is that every amp you have available goes into the batteries right up to 98% charge. There is no current drop off like lead acid batteries. And no absorbtion phase issues. With Lead-acid you would have to find shore power for at least 24hours every month to keep the batteries fully conditions. And obviously running the generator for 24hr would not be good. For 220VAC (shore or generator) charging of the 24VDC we have a 100amp Combi plus a separate 75amp charger . With this 175amps we can fully charge from 30%-100% in just 1.5 hours. On the Volvo we have a large 150amp Mastervolt alternator. Realistically, on a yacht like this, with all the systems we have to have the generator or engine (back up) to charge. We didnt consider wind gen as they are always so noisy. We did consider water generator (Watt and Sea) but they are ugly off the transom and the through hull version would surely get clogged with weed in the Caribbean. For 220v the Combi puts out 3.5Kw. Enough to run any 220v electrical device we have, including the water maker. This means that we can make water when motoring (via the 150A/24v alternator) which has been super useful. If we motor for 6 hours we can make 1000 litres of water (1 ton!). I think that is about it. We set the boat up like this when we did a big re-fit early 2017. I have a word document about that is you would like a copy. Just give me an email address. Or, ask any more questions here.

What are you doing going out on deck with no harness connected..? with just two people on board and even in calm weather you should be harnessed at all times once you go out on deck. Sorry but I am just thinking of you guys and your safety.

Wow! How do these daredevils keep from being lost at sea or being drowned? No lifejackets when right on the edge of that leaning, wind blown boat. Yikes! I wish someone with experience would tell me I worry too much because, I was intending on buying a yacht myself but can't imagine taking the risks this fellow did. He must be very physically strong even though his frame would tell you is only average in body strength? Please, someone give me a more positive outlook about safe sailing in winds and waves such as I just witnessed? Thank you, Tom

Buddy these are average conditions in the Ocean. Good sailing but nothing to stress about. When the conditions deteriorate we wear harnesses and my wife a life jacket. There is no point in me wearing a PFD because there is no hope my wife could ever get the boat back to me anyway.

Thanks for your concern. I’m assuming you mean life jackets and safety harness? For us, safety is all about risk assessment and being acutely aware of our macro and micro environment not just blindly wearing PFDs etc all the time. For instance when departing we were unsure of the seastate after 50kt winds the day before - so we wore PFDs. After that we felt conditions didn’t warrant them. Each person has their own thoughts regarding the threshold safety gadgets should be used. Usually, if conditions are bad enough for harnesses we are not filming. Or rather, we work hard with planning to never be in such conditions. We also have several DONT: don’t pee over the rail ( that’s how most fall over board ), don’t go on deck alone at night; don’t sail downwind without a boom preventer. We have quite a few more, but those are the key ones. Thanks again for your concern. We dont plan to be making an MOB video!

@@SailCloudyBay Excellent video you were definately pushing. I had the same concerns and as a sailor agree this is entirely your decision...but... If you did fall overboard in those conditio ns it would be impossible for your partner to keep a spot on you and at the same time either drop the sails and get turned around or tack and gybe to come around. Could easily take 15-20 minutes at which point you will be lost at sea. Would be a challenge to get a mob even with 3 person crew and dedicated spotter. I would add to your rules if shooting video - PFD and clip on. This is a task not centered on staying on the boat. It's really not a big deal to clip in if you are just staying in the back deck area. Fair winds.

Sorry, but we don’t film our personal domestic life. And that includes eating meals. We are not “that” sort of reality TV sailing channel ( where they never show actual sailing!). Yes, the scuppers don’t keep up with deck water when I’m pushing her hard in a. If sea like that. But no harm done. It just spills over the gunnel. Have you ever seen pics of old sailing schooners sailed hard? Decks are always awash. And it adds to the thrill frankly.

20:05 hi, is holding water on the rails , I mean the "hallways" are not draining, just staying there, is that normal ?
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 2 жыл бұрын
The scuppers are draining OK. But there is more water coming on board than draining. It’s normal when I push the boat hard like this. I could reef the sails more to reduce boat heel but the reduced power would also reduce ability to drive through the waves.

Vertical battens I have never seen before. What make of sail is that? I haven't looked up the make of the boat yet.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 5 жыл бұрын
Vertical battens on a in-mast furling mainsail gives it very good shape. But you have to be VERY careful when rolling it into the mast to ensure the battens go in parallel to the mast ... otherwise you end up in a world of trouble ( a jam in the mast ). And the other inconvenience is when you take the sail down ( rarely ) the battens all have to come out and some are longer than the boat! The sails are by Elvstrom. They come standard with Halberg Rassy yachts.

What’s the main reason for the Dinghy being on deck and not on the Davits?
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 5 жыл бұрын
On long passages where we cannot trust the weather forecast beyond 4 days, we always put the dinghy on the deck. It takes the strain off the davits and if, god forbid, a rouge wave went into the dinghy while on the davits, the davits would surely break off. The dinghy could easily accommodate a ton of water. Those are the 2 key reasons

@SailCloudyBay

Thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed the sailing. With wind noise We've experimented with lots of things including an external mic with a big fluffy cat. But what we find most useful and effective is 3-4 little stick-on fluffies, one around each microphone. It cuts the wind noise, but if its really windy the GoPro tends to make out voice sound like we are taking inside a steel drum!
