I love the Rigging Doctor and am now a convert to Dyneema for rigging...all except for the jib furler as mentioned (I think). For me the lack of corrosion, light weight and UV resistance are a win win, you just need to pump the mast up in cold climates! Great video, friends and sailing, it's what it's all about.

Hi Steve & Judy, great video realy enjoyed it. In Turkey the eye is there to ward off eviel and most houses have it by the front entrance. The rock you were trying to identify looks like basalt which is a volcanic rock which would explain the air bubbles.

Hey guys. The blue eye is to prevent every priceless things from the evil eye. In Greece they hang the blue eye to the new born babies, the horses and outside of the houses. Any way you can see them hanging from anything that the owner feels that must be protected from the evil eye. This is a very old tradition.

Hi just want to say that jumping or diving from the spreaders seems like a fun idea but it is incredibly dangerous. I remember years ago during a becalmed summer race there was some larking about. I didn't see it happen but a guy who did this didn't quite travel far enough. You can imagine the injury. Not sure if he slipped or his push off, pushed the mast away. We did see the Solent coastguard helicopter come to take him away. Gives me shivers just thinking about. Stay safe.

@svfairisle
@svfairisle 3 жыл бұрын
Yes we do at least have two lines on it now when we tow. And yes Fair Isle comes into her own on those sorts of passages, the crew on the other boat didnt have such a nice sail & said the boat became difficult to steer in the following sea. I did think they would come roaring past us though with their much longer water line length, it's only usually on heavy weather upwind legs we beat other boats as the sort of slamming you get with modern boats means you really can't push them too much, Fair Isle just goes through waves with zero slamming

Just a really quick point, and if I understood correctly regarding the comment made that if you use dyneema for your forestay you can’t have a furling headsail, this actually is incorrect. It is perfectly ok to have a furling headsail rather than having to hank on. If your not aware of the channel, I would recommend you have a good look at the Australian couple (Free Range Sailing) who completely re-rigged their 30ft boat with dyneema, and they have a furling headsail, and there have been no issues with this. As to the cost of re-rigging with dyneema it’s basically the same as using stainless steel wire, but does have the advantage as you noted of being able to carry spare rigging. Regarding the lifespan, yes the riggers out here seem to think it should last between 10-20 yrs. The real question at this time is how the marine insurers view dyneema over stainless steel rigging. As I understand it, they will insure a boat with dyneema rigging but there is some concerns from some insurers. Such a lovely lot of islands you were sailing around in this latest film 😁.
@svfairisle
@svfairisle 3 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting, I’ll have a look at Free range sailing, would be interested to see how they’re managing roller reefing on a dyneema forestay the only system I’ve ever come across for a furling headstay on dyneema is the lightweight one from Coligio which does mount on dyneema but can’t be reefed, it’s either in or out, so no good for a cruising boat

Those may not be air bubbles in the rock - you can get that effect where there are inclusions of a mineral that's water soluble and it then disolves out over time leaving the holes. Air bubbles don't necessarily make something a metamorphic rock either, for example pumice. Large ammounts of gas are produced as pressure falls during volcanic erruptions - if the gas can escape (silica poor magmas) you get a bubbling pool - like in hawaii, if the bubbles can't escape they get bigger and bigger until eventually you have bits of rock in combined bubbles and it then comes out very fast - giving you a plinian erruption like vesuvius or krakatoa. Sailing Freedom has dynema rigging I believe too.
@svfairisle
@svfairisle 3 жыл бұрын
I think the green one was probably Basalt, so an igneous rock with the bubbles being there from fast cooling, but I'm sure you're right there are a lot of different explanations.
@tomriley5790
@tomriley5790 3 жыл бұрын
@@svfairisle it could be but basalt is usually darker and more uniform as it's formed from silica poor magma and the gas usually escapes (think hawaii, or the rocks on the west coast of scotland - giant's causeway etc.) at a guess if it's an igneous rock I'd suggest it could be Rhyolite (silica rich and fast cooling).

Hi Steve. A question. In an earlier comment, I said we were (coincidentally) about 3 or 4 weeks behind you on a trip from Nidri/Vliho round to the Aegean. I am just back from Greece. Koroni, Kalamata, Kagio, Elephanosis, Monemvasia, Kyparissi etcetc. All excellent. And it was great to get your videos a few weeks ahead ofus. In a thunderstorm, yes there were a few, and boyoboy, they were violent, yes we lost the dingy. It was a rather good Highfield. So the question. Given the Alu keel of the Highfield, have you any concerns re the TrueKit, and its ability and ruggedness to beach onto pebbles etc in a typical Greek cove?? How scraped is it looking under its 'keels'??
@svfairisle
@svfairisle 3 жыл бұрын
The TrueKit is well reinforced and although we've abused it mercilessly it's still going strong. Actually i've heard disturbing stories of the aluminium to Hypalon joint so that might be a bigger weak point than having an soft bottomed dinghy? Hard bottomed dinghys are nicer to ride in though I think, sitting in it rather than on it always feels safer, just to heavy for the way we use it.

Yes, they are there to distract the "evil eye" (Jinn and other evil creatures) from stealing the soul of the person who wears the blue eye bead. When we were young parents in Tunisia, it was common for strangers to want to pin them on our baby to protect him from Jinn and the like. The idea being the blue bead distracts the Jinn.

So, as Fair Isle (and her crew) seem to enjoy good downwind sailing, surely you should head West and do a trade wind crossing?!?

Interested in learning more about having two head sails out Steve. Why would you do it and on what sort of reach?
@svfairisle
@svfairisle 3 жыл бұрын
True cutters have the mast a little further back that an equivalent sloop and two foresails. This is excellent for cruising short handed as all the sail areas are manageable size short handed. The boat the others were on for instance (a sloop) had a large electric winch and they said they could not have done without it. In fact they were using the other winch's as turning blocks to get lines on the electric one!. So the main is small enough to hoist by hand almost to the top (with the halyard at the mast) and the Yankee and staysail together give the sort of power you would get from a 120% Genoa. So going to wind we fly them both and get good power, anything aft of the beam and it's best to put away the staysail and just run on the yankee. It's also much more versatile in heavy weather as instead of a heavily reefed genoa that looses all its shape and has the effort a long way forward you have a staysail that can be fully out (on Fair Isle up to about 40 knots) with good shape and center of effort well inboard as it should be. Have a loom at the beginning of Episode 47 we show a bit of tacking with all sails on there.

As I understand it, the "evil eye" is bad energy, bad luck, bad omen cast onto someone and the reason you would wear the pendant is to ward it off should someone try to cast it onto you. In any rate, that is what I was told in Turkey when I asked a fisherman why they painted it onto their boats. So by inference, if you are warding off the evil eye by wearing the evil eye, then the evil eye that you are wearing can be seen to represent good luck to you. As clear as mud isn't it.

Probably best to want to be unique since everybody is!

I usually look forward to and enjoy Sailing Fair Isle videos as they form a perfect balance between travelogue and sail experience but the inclusion of the OTT Americans in so much of this episode made it less so. I'm afraid I will not be watching the "Group Chat"

We knew the group chat wouldn't be for everyone, it's really only going to be of interest to people who follow several of the channels I expect, but it is a way of introducing other sailing channels to people. Maybe some of the viewers who want a bit more jumping from thee cross-trees will hook onto Bums on a Boat and some of the viewers looking for more of what we offer will find us. Thats the idea. Anyway, all of them we really nice people and we had a lot of fun making the films with them. We at least will be interested to see what how they tell the story of the trip in their videos.
