Try steam cleaning it. And that is why I will NEVER live in a place with a HOA. HOA’s should be outlawed. If you can’t set up a tent at your house for a couple of hours, something is very wrong.

Similar thing happened to me. I have the SmittyBilt RTT (which has been incredible). Hurricane Irma came through and evidently lifted the cover enough to let the rain in. I opened it about a week later and my mold and stains looks significantly worse than yours. The stains are there still, but all the mold is dead. I used a mix of vinegar/water and household upholstry cleaner then hosed it out for an eternity. Foam mattress i soaked down in lysol and washed the cover in normal washing machine. Pillows and cases went in the garbage. Sleeping bags just got washed like normal. Your tent ain't ruined at all, bud. Just looks different now! Some organic camouflage.

I did this to my ground tent as well after backpacking near the ocean. It was also only a week or so but by the time I got back home and unpacked it stank and was covered. I ended up using Lysol wipes believe it or not and some elbow grease. One thing is make sure you re-waterproof it! My tent was wetting through after until I re did it!

Aye Mate. you can fix problem with the blend of 50/50 Apple cider vinegar and water only as when you place Lemon juice it neutralises the acid of the vinegar. only use vinegar and water. spray on and wipe with micro fibre. sorry this is a late blog but it works on your non-tare fabric.

Have you ever had an issue of water accumulating on the fly just below the stargazer window? Water seems to puddle on both sides. I have to raise the fly to disperse the water. I had in October initially made a trip to Chattanooga with a trailer that wasn't wide enough in Tom's opinion. On May 1st we went back and it's funny actually picked up the tent we were supposed to get in October from their outlet (brand new but with a floor dent on ladder side floor with a $1000 discount). I have two dogs and added in front of the left side ladder a six step Torklift A7806 steps plus an additional seventh step to allow the dogs to enter the tent w/o assistance. They go up and down with no problem. We sit and go down the steps as well. I had to mount the Denali tent at 60 inches to allow the use of the steps.

So if you absolutely have to pack up wet, but then you come home and its still raining. Is it best to now leave it packed until its dry out, even if its a couple of days, or is it best to maybe open the tent and just leave it open and exposed to the rain, but at least able to circulate inside?

I can't believe you accepted a $3500 tent from a small business because you stained yours. It's camping gear. It gets dirty and stained. Also, you could have easily killed someone driving with that gear loaded on a cracked steel frame. That was absolutely NOT a "small crack". That could have easily been a few hundred pounds flying into someone's windshield while they were doing 70mph on I-75. This is the problem with people buying into hobbies.

This was a great episode to watch. I appreciate how you took something catastrophic and made the best of it. These things happen, that’s what I’ve learned in my old age. I’d bet you’re not the first person to do that. I was hoping CVT would do a tent swap, and use yours for testing and research! I do a lot of photo shoots, and I’ve packed away gear wet, but I’ve learned to set a timed reminder on my phone, for 12 hours later, so that helps to mitigate some of the impact, and usually I’m home or able to address it by then. I also respect the TARDIS decal you’re rocking. Safe journeys.

I wonder if spraying on your diluted bleach/water combo and then closing it up for the night, and then opening it back up in the morning would allow the diluted bleach to help actually remove the stains. Just thinking allowing a bit of soak time, rather than spraying it on and then it dries too quickly for it to do the job of stain removal. Good deal on getting it replaced for the new owner.

You'll need to hand scrub it with a bristle brush or green scrubbie and either a water/vinegar mix or you can get a bottle of mildew killer from Home Depot. The brush or scrubbie is necessary to mechanically remove the mold, and (particularly) the stuff from HD will kill the mold. As for the discoloration, not alot you can do to remove it. It'll just look dingy.

boy, I don't think there's anything wrong with your tent, I would still use it, as long as you clean the living mold off, I would be perfectly content. I have had a few tents in the past that have the same looking mold on them, all I did was clean them, and lived with the stains. To me, as long as you clean as best you can and let the thing dry out really good there shoud'nt be a problem. Anyway, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

I used to be an upholsterer / canvas fabricator. I have repaired hundreds of tents and tarps. Factoid: Mildew will cause fabric to disintegrate. You cannot repair it because it will tear at the point where new fabric is sewn on. That is an expensive lesson. I hope all you watches of this video will learn before it happens to you or your friends.

CVT has been great, including helping me install in Bend afterhours, on a long weekend, but I think you have a bit more pull with them than I. I wish your video would have been out there when I was searching for what to do last spring. Lemon juice, salt, bleach, tent cleaner, scrubbing, spraying, repeating and still stained. Never mind redoing the waterproofing after I rubbed it all off. Leaving it open in the hot sun whenever I could all summer did the most to bleach out the stain. Keep up the "what-not-to-do" videos. I'm actually looking for a rooftop tent and reached out to Cascadia Vehicle Tents (CVT). They didn't have the Mt. Rainier or the Mt. Denali in stock and they had zero idea on when they would get them back in stock. Seems odd that they have zero visibility into their inventory. I was told to call back every few weeks to check in to see if they have stock. Ain't nobody got time for that. These tents are thousands of dollars and you can't order them unless they physically have stock. Weird! There isn't even a way to hold them for when they do come in with a down payment or anything. Because of all this, I'm going with a Tepui.

Great video. To bad about the mould but worked out in the end. Mould on the tent is one of my biggest fears.

Take the fabric off and send it out for electron beam sterilization. Won't solve the stains but will for sure kill the mold and mildew, and any other biologics along for the ride. Looks like you're west coast, should be a facility not too far.

Tilex mold and mildew will dissolve it as if it wasn't even there. Bleach and water is cute but it doesn't do what the tilex does.

Buy the best, and cry once. Dang glad I passed on CVT and bought a Tepui. $3,500 for a CVT??? Glad you got it all worked out. Bobby is a "funny" guy to work with. That's all I'm going to say. (thank you folks @ Tepui!)
