I hope you have someone special that is going to inherit everything in your home. Someone that’s going to cherish it as much as you do, as much as we all do.

The beautiful long piece of tapestry you got was for making a bell pull. They used to come in kits with the brass top and bottom. In the “olden” days they were connected to bells to call a servant. Later, they were hung on the wall for decoration.

"Fistaware" doesn't glow since it's uranium oxide glaze baked in the pottery. You need any radiation detector device like a Geiger counter or dosimeter to detect it. The uranium oxides used in making glass is mixed with the silicate and is not the same as the ones for pottery. Although you might find some fiestaware that are slightly radioactive in white, yellow, or pink, you normally look for the atomic orange color for the spicy ones.
@BargainBarons5 ай бұрын
Awesome!!! Thanks for that!! I figured uranium must play a role in the radioactive-ness of Fiestaware, however we do not know what the differences are in the uranium between uranium glass and fiestaware and why one would fluoresce and the other wouldn't.... do you know is it a completely different form or uranium? Or is it just that the pigment of the glaze covers up the ability for the uranium to glow under UV?
@RurouniHeero5 ай бұрын
@@BargainBarons Uranium glass uses oxide diuranate (looks yellow usually) during the melting of the silicate to create the glass, its all in the glass making process, while in pottery they use an oxide directly from the mineral, which is more of a charcoal and dark color. Then the pottery "cooks" for lack of better term and the glaze will solidify. Depending on the mixture different colors are achieved, but using the uranium oxide will give it a bright orange color. (Atomic orange) I've over simplified it, but its basically why one "glows" and why the other don't. The uranium glass "glows" under UV because, simply put, the UV excites the electrons above the ground state and gives off photons as the electrons transition back to the ground state. The electrons gives off energy in the form of photons during this transition, thus giving off a certain glow. Various minerals will glow different colors depending on their molecular composition, and uranium gives off green because of its composition. Cheers Bargain Barons!! Keep it up! Love what you're doing!

2:30 see those shiny snowflake bowls? I have 5 in different colors, scattered around in my yard!---8:00 At 73, I'm about the youngest of my social group, and we're always on the look-out for DME (durable medical equipment) to put aside for when one of the group has need of it (surgery, or disabling condition, etc.) Most DME is not covered, and are all out-of-pocket costs. By looking for, buying for the future, the savings are a relief. I'd love to have known what the shower bench was priced at. Those aren't as common as bedside commodes and walkers.
@BargainBarons5 ай бұрын
Oh wow. Yeah that's great thinking, something that we have never thought of. A lot of the things weren't priced so we probably would have had to ask them about it.

We have a fiesta ware collection that we use in our 1950's kitchen. ❤ Always on the lookout for inexpensive pieces.
@BargainBarons5 ай бұрын
Love that! We learned recently that actual Fiestaware is radioactive. We figured the coating must have something to do with uranium, so we tried the black light but no reaction. Then someone in here in the comments mentioned that they won't glow under U/V because it's a uranium oxide glaze that's baked into the pottery which must be different from the uranium added to uranium glass.... but there's a video online we saw of a Geiger counter going nuts near some Fiestaware!! 😀

There is A TON of Tupperware in our city for some reason, so it doesn't command a lot of money locally, and we don't sell online so.... no point for us to pick it up, but a local online seller will probably do OK with it.
