Cheap Thrills Garage

Cheap Thrills Garage

Күн бұрын

In this episode I complete all the necessary items for a high milage Mk5 Golf. These include, all oils, fluids, filters, fuel pump lifter, drive belt, PCV and timing belt inspection.
Throughout this series I will carry out a variety of common mechanical repairs on this vehicle before a host of performance upgrades in preparation for some serious boost. As always my series will have no tragic humour, no fancy editing, and no advertising, just a strong focus on DIY work and building things on a strict budget in your own shed.

you say the cam follower is fine and will probably be fine for a long time, but if it doesnt have the black coating anymore, it actually rubs against the camshaft, causing your camshaft to wear much much quicker. it's not a major fail by any means, but you did well on replacing it, because when it looks like this, it will eat away your camshaft. and a camshaft is much more expensive than a cam follower. I also noticed you went with an INA cam follower. I've heard these wear down much quicker compared to original Volkswagen as well, but I've not tested that statement myself yet. replace your cam follower as soon as the black coating is gone people. i've heared it avarages out around 15-20k km depending on how much hp you're running (some 10k, some 40k)

Very interesting you said, I have just done both timing belts and in the process had the HPFP off and the INA follower was far more than the OEM one and the car only has 227,000 on it, so it has only 27,000 or so. I replaced it with a genuine VW this time.

Hey mate I subbed cause I love your mk5 GTI content! Got the ea113 in my MK6R and considering dealing with the mock-up and fitment issues of one of those cheap eBay twin Intercoolers like you did simply cause the price difference between one of these and a brand name is insane. I’m curious did you notice any performance improvements or more sustained pulls due to less heat soak? Or did you do the Intercooler install as a step towards a stage 2 or 2+ ecu tune? Love the content.

Hey mate, nice I will buy one of those next I think. The tuner said mine made just about the highest untuned power he had seen from a Mk5, 139Kw at the wheels, and got about normal stage 2 power when tuned (168kw) limited by the turbo. Another channel called Decimal Tenths rates this setup and got 299kw with heaps of other upgrades so it definitely works. However I'm in two minds about it, I had my radiator out the other day and saw the factory cooler. It's massive, I expected a tiny little thing like my 9N3 GTI but it is probably triple the size of the front mount and I believe the Mk6 one is even bigger. The problem is that it sits jammed between the radiator and condenser which is just a huge heat sink. Doing it again, I would delete the factory cooler, buy a big 300x600 3 row front mount, cut the bumper foam above where is mine is mounted, cut 1" off the bottom of the metal bumper and hang it off there, like I have seen some people do. More vids to come on tuning etc.

Great video very helpful. Whats your say on carbon cleaning and the cam chain tensioner? Thanks
@cheapthrillsgarage
@cheapthrillsgarage Жыл бұрын
Did a video on carbon cleaning. They don't have have a cam chain, just a rubber timing belt. The timing belt tensioner is renewed whenever it is replaced. Every 120,000 is recommended.

Interesting that you chose a W40 oil. Any specific reason? All the official sources I can find, including LiquiMoly and Shell indicate a W30 oil. I know you mentioned Australian heat, however, how would that affect the factory spec to make it unsuitable? Btw, great oil brand choice!
@cheapthrillsgarage
@cheapthrillsgarage 9 ай бұрын
More stable viscosity under heat changes, slight engine wear expected at 200K, and the hot climate. Common choice.

5W-30 is OEM for best fuel economy and all they require at stock power. 0W-40 is just as good in cold stars, and thicker when hot. 5W-40 is thicker in both hot and cold conditions.
