Steve - poached egg tip! I used to add the vinegar to water until I saw this: get a shallow dish or plate, add a few drops of vinegar, then crack eggs into it. Leave for a few moments then gently tip in the boiling water, from a low height. Really improved my poached egg game!

Watching Steve cleaning the boat and going from full "man cave mode" back to civilised living quarters when he got THE phone call, was like watching a young guy clean up after a party while his parents were away.😁 Kraken yachts are very nice indeed. Another sailing couple that I follow spent some time, also by invitation, on a Kraken 50. You will love it.

Great episode folks. We need some tech talk on the poached eggs Steve, you don't need the pan looking like the Corryvreckan to poached an egg, otherwise you could only do one at a time, Sieve the egg ( get a small one), I use a glass to catch, the watery stuff from the egg, use the the freshest eggs you can, then pop it in a ramekin so you can slip it into the surface if the water, getting the water boiling then turn right down, no bubbles then slip your eggs in for 4 minutes 30 seconds. Done! And none of that bloody vinegar. Good luck and be safe. David

Judy and Steve you have such an inspiring channel. It’s been a few years now since I last owned a boat - well a fractional share in a Hanse 350 which we kept in Milna in Croatia and then in a Beneteau 393 which was based in Cleopatra Marina in the Ionian. And several decades since I did a road trip around Turkey. I’ve swapped a sea yacht for a land yacht for now to suit my circumstances better but am thinking of chartering with friends who sailed with me many times in Croatia and Greece but this time maybe in Turkey. It will be interesting to follow you around to see where the best would be to charter for a couple of weeks in Turkey. The 2 of you really make me miss my sailing days. And I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of your boat with its traditional shape, full keel, keel hung rudder etc etc. I would also be super excited by a new lithium battery system and water maker!
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
I think chartering in Turkey should be a very good option, the exchange rate is very favourable here at the moment. Steve, just a thought, while watching, l noticed what looks like the positive and negative lug connectors in section 5:52 are so large in diameter that if one of the nuts get lose the connectors could rotate and make contact causing a direct short. Thanks for sharing.
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
yes it's possible but unlikely as there is just a 6 inch bit of cable off either end so not liable to move even if the bolts came loose. I would take it much more seriously if the result was shorting out positive & negative but thats just the breaker for the positive line so if the touch it just means the switch wouldnt isolate properly.

@@svfairisle Fantastic. My only worry is that it looks like the strength of the keel comes from glass reinforced divancell foam tapering down to the lead bulb. The only other 48 I know of to come on the market was up for 3/4 million, not sure what she went for in the end. She was like new as she had been stored for years almost as soon as she was launched. Did I miss something? I thought Tef-Gel and dielectric grease are two different things.
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
Dielectric grease just means a none conducive grease, could be lots of things including Vaseline. Tef Gel is the best stuff though, it’s PTFE based and it’s main use is anti galling in stainless, stopping dissimilar metal galvanic corrosion and keeping electrical connection’s good. Thanks for reminding me though I will add a section in the page I’m writing on batteries on the website, people always get confused how it can stop galvanic corrosion on the one hand but still allow a good electrical connection in wiring
@andypag10712 жыл бұрын
@@svfairisle interesting. Vaseline isn't great due to its lower melting points. Over time it's prone to melt away. Are you applying it to the surfaces of the conductive join? I apply it after the join is made as a final step to prevent humidity/corrosion entering the join. I guess it gets squeezed out, and makes for a better seal. Glad your set up is all working well. Such a great sense of freedom to have water and power autonomy. Especially with the state of the world just now. Have a great season heading west.
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
@@andypag1071 Yes that’s right, that’s why it’s better to use Tef Gel, but smear it all over the connections before you bolt them up. I’ll do the write up on the battery page of the website now.

Steve, do you realize you live on a power generating station? Sit back and look at the wiring, controllers, monitors, heat sensors, alarms. Etc etc .Canadian, Joshua Slocum circumnavigated twice with paraffin lamps. Is all you have really necessary? Just an observation.
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
Well that’s just a silly argument really. Do we really need washings machines in houses? People got by with a washboard and mangle in the past, but try and find someone now that would like to go back there. It’a more serious than that on a boat though we don’t have a lot of the conveniences of a house but in the modern world you really need the ones you have. I can’t charge a laptop and my cameras from a paraffin lamp! I could dig out my old arriflex film camera and do it that way, but good luck finding film processor now. It’s hardly a YT channel! Times have changed for navigation at sea too. I sailed as a teenager before GPS with a sextant and paper charts & frankly it’s bloody dangerous. If you haven’t run aground after 3 days with cloudy skys and no sextant shot (and no RDF bearings to help as they’re all turned off now) you’ll probably burn your boat down with the paraffin lamp!
@billygrahamyachtsinc7532 жыл бұрын
@@svfairisle didn't intend to initiate an argument. Just an observation. Must take a lot of your day monitoring all your systems. And hugely expensive to purchase.
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
@@billygrahamyachtsinc753 It’s an expense and a responsibility to fit and maintain yes but what I’m trying to get across is that having reliable power on a boat is a necessity not a luxury these days. With out it you are consigning yourself to maintaining a position on a paper chart and that is a full time job off shore. It would take me half an hour to get a sun/star shot with a sextant and work out the figures to give me a line. You need three for your ‘cocked hat’ and the you have to constantly dead recon forward, not having to do that frees up my whole day.

@@svfairisle I understand, as I have a 60' LOA Schooner. What is a "cocked hat"?
@svfairisle2 жыл бұрын
@@billygrahamyachtsinc753 Navigating traditionally you tend to just get a line that you know you are on. A sight bearing from shore could be one, a second could be a sextant noonshot which will give you your Lind of latitude and a third could be a RDF bearing. These three will not intersect completely because there is always error, so you get a ‘cocked hat’
