Sometimes you are just so used to having problems and having things to worry about, that when you don´t have anything to worry about you just start making up things, making it impossible to just relax.

I feel this really hard with university. When I genuinely just have no homework, no upcoming tests to study for, no events to prepare for, my brain just cannot believe it. It searches for anything I could have missed cuz I had to miss something, it's not possible that there isn't any work to be done.

I love to listen to music while I work, weather that's at my manual labor job or working around the house. Its so easy to just turn some tunes on with my phone and just slip it back in my pocket so my hands are free. I find that really anything that I can immerse myself in is great for relaxing. Relaxing doesn't always have to be something idle or quiet, relaxation is what makes you happy.

I really relate to what you're saying. Ever since my girlfriend left to join the Army I've felt purposeless, even though I am doing things (fitness, school etc.) There's something lacking in our society that makes us feel like we are in a bottomless pit, a cycle almost. I just want to boost my own morale in some way, I have my methods but sometimes at the end of the day; they simply aren't enough.

Oh god, this is so relatable. People always say to get rest, but *how*???????? I physically can't make myself. I don't know how to. I can't just exist and do nothing. I need to be working on something, need to be moving, or need to be accomplishing something *constantly*. If I don't, I get so uncomfortable, anxious, and just understimulated. I feel good when I'm working on something!! I think my adhd certainly plays a role in it. I also think it's some internalized beliefs that I constantly need to be making the most of the time that I have/need to constantly be productive in some way. If I sit down and don't do anything it feels like I'm wasting time that could be used for something else. It's good that I recognize that I'm happiest when I'm moving and creating, that's how I like to spend my free time, but at the same time it sucks not being able to just exist without the discomfort or the guilt of not doing something. Especially when I am exhausted and barely have the energy to do anything but can't rest to regain my energy because I feel like I need to be doing something. It's a whole mess and an ongoing struggle. Music and asmr have actually been my only tool to be able to just exist in the moment without doing something. I recognize just sitting in silence isn't an option for me because of the adhd but listening to a song on repeat or an asmr video are the only times I can just sit there, do nothing, and feel comfortable and calm.

Actually, walking can be very relaxing. Other people find relaxing going to the gym, or running, or doing stuff, even if it looks like "being busy" to someone else. We're all different and I relate with you about being able to relax when you're doing something. That's also the reason why I decided to make a job out of one of my hobbies. Of course everything changes when it becomes a job, but still, when I'm doing those things I used to do, when it was "just a hobby", I enjoy it, I can relax. And that helps "surviving" all the other moments, which are naturally stressful. Last thing: as it happened with you, when I got older than 30 (almost 8 years ago), I started enjoying the silence. And it's fun, because, on the contrary, my dad, who is 73, still listens to music most of his days. Sometimes I wonder if I got older than him, lol! P.S.: a walk in the nature, especially in the mountains (for me) is the best :)

Not promoting drug use, but smoking a lil crumb of CBD-weed, then doing 30 mins of yoga, then lying down on the ground, allows me to fully relax and enjoy “doing nothing” without falling asleep. I can lay like that in savasana for an hour or more, meditating or just “going dormant” as I like to think of it. As someone with an ADHD-type brain, this is the only route to true relaxation for me. Most other times my mind is playing 3 radio stations and planning for the future while simultaneously replaying past events. I may look like I’m staring at the wall doing nothing, but it is super busy on the inside. Thanks for sharing, ER. Appreciate your presence on this here website.

Same here! And i have noticed it gets worse as i grow older. I'm 41 now and it's so different now than it was when i was in my 20's and even 30's. I have my own KZbin channel too because speaking in front of the camera calms me, not sitting on chair reading, for example. Whenever i get bored and anxious, i want to do a video, go outside or just do something! Video games and music also keeps me busy and those are great anxiety killers for me🤔 About 2 years ago i found this thing called ASMR through your channel and countless videos of your channel has helped me to relax by just listening and not doing anything else. So at least i have found some way to be able to relax other than keeping myself busy all the time ❤️ Your channel means so much to me and i'm sure there are thousands of other people who thinks the same 🙏❤️

Hey ER thanks for the awesome content. You help me sleep every night. I’m currently 17 years old and I can relax I’ve been able to sit outside for hours without doing anything. I’m usually able to keep myself busy, I like to draw and play video games. However, I do deal with a lot of guilt whenever I feel like I’m not doing anything “productive”. When I was a lot younger I could have fun without stressing out, that’s something I miss. I do relate to how you’re feeling. I suppose I’m in a different situation. I like to sit and do nothing but my guilt inhibits me from doing so. Thanks ER, hopes this helps someone

Hey, as long as you’re doing something that makes you happy in your downtime, you’ve got nothing to be guilty for. Being productive is great and all, but if you don’t ever take time for yourself and ONLY yourself, you’ll end up not feeling as good in the long run, so don’t feel ashamed of playing some video games or drawing, cuz that’s just as important as productivity

My dad is from Nepal, near the west side, and he'd describe himself staring at a flowing river for 2 hours, occasionally with his friend. I share your anxiety about time slipping away. I often wake up in the night filled with dread and panic; fearing death; fearing that I'm wasting away. I was watching a video on Nebula yesterday about Dark Side of the Moon, and how the first half of that album is all about the worries of running out of time, and how it's communicated through the music and sound design. No doubt you've listened to that, haha. But to answer your question, relaxing isn't something you do. It's not a switch you can turn on. It's just a state of being. The only times i'm relaxed are when I'm taking a hot shower or floating effortlessly on the surface of the ocean. Heat and weightlessness does it for me. I also find chiropractor visits to be relaxing, but those are less frequent. Otherwise, I'm restless, which makes me a bad cuddler and bedmate, unfortunately. I have a hard time just sitting motionless. Related, I can't stand boredom. At work, if I'm doing nothing, that's a huge waste of my life, and it irks me to my core. I'm required to be there, but unlike my home, I can't use my computer or go out and do something. That's all part of the anxiety, I fear. it's the root of this shared issue. Therapy and meds might work; improved quality of life, too. But rich or poor, everyone faces death at the end of their road; and I'm not all that great at forgetting that fact. iirc, you are an atheist, like me. One of the things that frightens me the most is the incomprehensibility of losing consciousness, never to regain it. It's that space between wakefulness and dreaming. Its those absent memories from early childhood, and the time in the womb. It's nothing. And it's nothing I will return to; and how can you possibly relax when staring down the barrel of that reality?

Maybe the trick is to just take a book and sit with it on your chest? :) It seemed like it worked for you for a moment. Sometimes I get this weird joy from just not doing anything, exactly when I have something important to do. Not saying I just don't do nothing in that case, but at that fleeting moment before I eventually start to move onto the thing I need to do, I get this feeling of satisfaction out of a simple act of sitting. Maybe that's the forbidden technique.
