I got 64 War Thunder players together to try out my channel dash inspired event. A small German task force vs un ending hordes of British Torpedo carrying planes including the dreaded swordfish.

I noticed that the torpedoes only really started to do damage after multiple consecutive hits (in the case of the midsection, at least) so in order to do damage, the aircraft actually had to ablate the Scharnhorst's torpedo bulge to do any serious damage

Extra historical fact: The three german heavies went through the channel with minimal damage. before both battleships struck mines, and Eugen lost her sturn to a submarine torpedo. Eugen was actually given over to the US when the Germans surrendered, and the crew spent time teaching the Americans how to care for the finiky, but very capable, German Equipment. The Americans couldn't be bothered to, however, so she had to be towed to Bikini atoll due to already having broken due to the American crew not giving the ship the special care it needed.

Tldr: KMS ships equipment breaks if left unantended. Gneisenau's fate was sealed after getting bombed during an Harbor Strike and Austrian Moustache Mans order to scrap the Surface ships after an botched Convoy attack in 1943 where all ships beached. Gneisenau's wreck was used an blockade in 1945 and was removed by the allies in two years. Scharnhorts fate was in 1944 where she met HMS Belfast and HMS Duke of York. Only a few couple men survived that cold winter storm in the artic waters.

I mean realistically what was the navy going to use it for? They already had the largest navy in history and the maintenance costs of the Eugen would probably be double that if any American cruiser.

@@decentish8546 I mean if nothing else if they kept it functional they could have given it back to west Germany a few years later. It was in very good shape and was an entirely capable warship when the US got its hands on it. Also this is the United States we are talking about. They built an entirely new factory to build shells for ONE free french warship (Richelieu)

@@42meep13 I mean yes, but that was during the war. After the war they had such a massive excess of ships that they had to immediately mothball or scrap the vast majority of them. As for giving it to west Germany that’s not a bad idea, but it probably would’ve made the French, British and Soviets pretty angry. The French were particularly opposed to the rearmament of west Germany. They didn’t even like the Germans commanding their own mine sweeper forces to remove all the leftover mines from the war.

Prinz Eugen's fate was a crime. She should have been preserved, or returned to West Germany a few years after the war to be turned into a guided missile cruiser as a way to jump start their navy.

What makes the Swordfish’s sacrifices even more sad was the fact that it was entirely up to the leader of the task group whether or not they wanted to embark on the mission, and in the end they stood no chance entirely due to the faults in the outdated design of the aircraft.

If you're asking how you can live like that in the game, it's because structural damage isn't modeled in War Thunder. Death is only determined by crew loss or flooding percentage, which you can counter with a high crew level and good damage control. Still, that's the most torpedoes I've seen anything survive in War Thunder by like a factor of 3.

This was amazing!!!!!!!!! I hope you read this. I am leaving World of Warships to play this as it seems much more enjoyable. I actually studied history with a minor in 20th century warfare and tactics. The channel run is one of my favorite battles of that era and this was a joy to watch. Side note... War Thunder is quite different from WoW, any good tips and tricks videos that would help as the aiming for me is still borked. I loved this production, as that is what it was!!!!!!!! World of warships has you die to simple spread of torpedoes. War thunder is total opposite. What is going on? That said I want to see more of these naval events. Time to start doing some history homework. Find some battles that may work for an event. Not like I could take part but I'll do it anyway. Also iron, you need someone for cinematic. It looks great. Gaining should be taking notes.

I don't play naval so I don't know how the torpedo mechanics work but isn't this a bit BS ? The Yamato "only" took 23 torpedoes before going down yet in this scenario the Scharnhorst took over 70 and was still going ! Did you guys add some sort of mod or is this what passes for normal in naval ? If so it doesn't look realistic at all.

I think I'd be the madman who uses a heavy bomber and try and deliver a barrel of monkeys... Either that or use a Sunderland ans try and blend in with my boat buddies who wouldn't suspect a thing. As for the swordfish only round? I have a foolproof strategy that's never failed. Line up several swordfish at slight angles facing away from eachother and drop the torpedoes in a ransom order. One of them will always hit and IF that fails? You always have the spare torpedo you are flying.
