Played on A1200 config. Intro, gameplay (3:26) & cinematics.
Tried it for the first time. I was planning to complete this, but mission 5 was annoying as hell. The objective is to destroy 100 crap flies in ten minutes after which fuel runs out. There's a built in cheat which replenishes fuel and ammo, but I'm not going to use it.

For those who don't know.. the backstory (I heard from people in the industry at the time) is that they wanted to make something like Battlestar Galactica. But they "borrowed" from all sorts of movies. The game was developed at the same time as Wing Commander, but was released later. OT: Wingcommander was initially called Squadron. Guess who is making "Squadron 42" ? 42 the meaning of life an everything.. this is the game he wanted to make from the very beginning. Think about what that type of dedication really means. Chris have wanted to make this game his whole life.

It is indeed very similar to Battlestar Galactica in terms of the storyline, even the fighters look like Vipers.
@SubduedRadical
@SubduedRadical Жыл бұрын
@@chriscowey7464 To be fair, that's the most generic fighter shape you can make - a straight line nose, cockpit in that main fuselage structure, some engines on the back, a pair of horizontal wings and a vertical wing/tail. The Z-95 Headhunter (proto-X-Wing) is basically the same design, too, just without the tail fin. Which makes sense, considering BSG was basically contemporary with Star Wars for "first sci-fi focused on starfighter combat". Star Trek predated both by a decade, but was more of a navy than space-air force themed combat setting. (And often more focused on the drama than the combat at any rate)

its being played on an A1200 configuration (emulated) according to the description, so that's a 32 bit system. When the game came out, most people would have played it on a 16 bit A500 or A600, so it would not have been this smooth. I know. I had it lol. It was shit.

This game had lots of promise but sadly really didn't deliver. Given this came way after Elite, and the simple shooter Kelly-X, and only 1 year before Elite II, it really doesn't hold up. The engine behind it is for more terrestrial flight simulators (F29 Retaliator) and the game suffers as a result. The space combat is still limited to terrestrial flight controls, and everything happens on an extremely limited plane with almost all the action at almost the same "altitude" (if that were a thing in space). The fleets of enemy ships simply fly from side to side of a sky-box and seldom move outside of that pre-set pattern. I didn't "hate" this game on release. I paid good money for it back in the day. But even as a teenager I saw it for what it was. Played it to completion, and sure, I'm keen to revisit this one just because. But it really wasn't that good.

Agreed, and it's really a shame they couldn't have proper space controls and positions. But on the flipside, it has planetary missions, whereas a game like Wing Commander has none!

I ran this on an Amiga 500+ It was okay, could have been a great game, but it was still unfinished when it was finally released. Anyway, it ran at a passable speed on my 500+ although it did slow down when there lots of ships milling about. Completed it quickly because they gave the cheat code for all weapons and fuel on the inlay card for the game. They did this to rush the game out because some missions were impossible to complete (If I remember correctly) without cheating. So many "If Only's" with this game...
@einokeino303
@einokeino303 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's still a typical problem with games industry to develop games from outside in. It's more important to get demos and hype out for marketing department. Then the release gets rushed and core gameplay is missing or messed up. Promises for included content are left unfulfilled. No man's sky is a good example how this is still true. At least nowadays stuff sometimes get fixed with patches and such, back then you were often stuck with what you bought.
@DingKong

I only knew games like Hunter from magazines back then, no one of my friends owned 3D-games with vector graphics in the early 90ies. Never played Wing Commander on Amiga myself, but it's probably on same level with hardware requirements. Poor or old A500 just wasn't ment for running such heavy 3D games. Hunter is a nice example of a 3D game that is rather playable on A500, even if it's very slow for modern day standards. Depends a lot how well it was coded and optimized for the hardware.
