Are we CRAZY to take a 2X2 here? Probably!!! Was it worth it?
We Brave a pretty nasty road to make it to this EPIC boondocking site. It takes us over an hour to go just 2 miles but we boondock at High Rock Bay in The Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Quite possibly perfection!!! (minus a few bugs) Check out our AMAZING drone footage of the area.

Quick geography lesson: High Rock Bay is not North of Copper Harbor, it's actually a little South. It's the EAST end of the Keweenaw. The furthest you can go is Keweenaw Point, but you'll be on foot or in a boat.

I've camped that location right next to the rocket range there - what a great spot. In the closing of your video from the bug screen install I positively identified the footage of the shoreline of that location. It occurs to me that a place is truly special to you when you need only see 5 seconds of vague footage to identify it. I hope you took the time to walk the little strand between High rock bay and Schlatter lake right there, and stopped at the great sand bay and the Jampot...sooo many great places just in that lone two-county peninsula.

We just visited the Copper Harbor area and had fun at Mary McDonald preserve (except for the black flies!! ) and started down the road to High Rock Point but turned around because the going was so slow and we had not planned enough time to venture all the way back. We are going back in the fall to see the fall colors maybe then. Brockway Mountain Dr. was amazing and would be incredible place to see northern lights. We did watch a sunset and storm moving across the lake that was awesome. I'm impressed that the Promaster made it back to High Rock Point.

I live outside of Marquette. To be clear, there are always bugs. But I would agree that August is a relatively good month to get out. June is going to be your worst month for dealing with bugs. You might want to invest in a couple bug jackets. The cold in the winter and the bugs in the summer is what keeps the UP from getting too crowded, it keeps the weak people out.

Most of the upper peninsula has pretty good cell service.. up there it is a hit and miss.. there are beautiful spots all around the upper peninsula.. closer to towns but just as beautiful and some more beautiful than this. Munising is awesome.. with stunning falls.. pictured rocks.. off of H58. Lots of places to pull off.

question............how do you film your through the windshield driving scenes,, thanks -- keep up the great vids.. what equipment -- time lapse or is all the speeding up - post editing.. btw -- the sumo springs are not that expensive and can be self done by most -- give about an inch lift -- the 3in lift on Promaster is from a place called Off Highway Van in Salt Lake City -- expensive mod -- Kevin from 30 and a wake up did a video on his lift there

Yup - it is a terrible road! I have never made it to the end, even in my 4 wheel drive! But even if you don't go that far there are awesome places to stop and hike:) Cell coverage is more not there than there. Don't count on it. I live in the UP and love it up here. Lake Superior is so clear, beautiful, and cold for sure:) What fun to see drone footage of the area. Did you find other places to boondock on the Keweenaw Peninsula?

If you had to ballpark it, what percentage of boondocking locations are you able to get to with stock ride height and all terrain tires? And have you considered a frame lift and/or taller tires? And with the extra ground clearance, what percentage of sites would you then be able to visit? Thanks for the content!
@oneadVANtureatatime
@oneadVANtureatatime 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! We have made it to 95 percent of the places we have tried to go.I have considered a lift with bigger tires but honestly, I don't think it's worth the money. The amount of money that would cost would be equally to almost 4 months of us traveling without work. That said, I would have gone with a 4 wheel drive van to start if we would have found one for the same price 😎
@antigroundhogday
@antigroundhogday 3 жыл бұрын
@@oneadVANtureatatime well that is heartening to hear. I know there are lifts and bigger tires and all sorts of stuff but to know that I'm only missing out on 5% of locations, screw that. I'm with you to save the money for more gas and more fun. Also, if you get a lift you have the cost of it and then if you throw bigger tires on you get even worse gas mileage. I think all terrain tires in the stock size is as far as I would go. Thank you for the qualified feedback!

You don’t need 4 wheel drive until you need 4 wheel drive. That being said, you can make it to a lot of destinations with good tires and a brain.

I have to laugh at some of these comments about how”brave” you must be and how “scary” that road is... how “crazy” you must have been. Wow, hey? That road looks like a main highway compared to some of the roads we cruise around on up here! Haha!! And bugs? Yeah... we got ‘em... and good thing too, otherwise we would be crawling with more trolls than bugs!! So yeah, they (the bugs, that is) do help keep some away though... those less “foolhardy” to “brave” our HOME. P.S. If any of us locals came up on you guys wearing those nets and gloves, you’d be laughed back to where ya came from... and especially seeing your dog dressed up like that! 🤣😆 So heads up, all yous guys that want to come up here: if yer scared, stay home; we won’t mind. You can betcha on dat one, ‘ey? 😆 P.S. The drone shots really were pretty cool. 👍🏼
