Might be good to mention that these designers aren't just Magic The Gathering "fans", Darwin Kastle AND Robert Dougherty are MTG Pro Tour Champions and have been both inducted into the Magic The Gathering Pro Tour Hall of Fame. These guys know Magic like very few others do and they designed this game with that experience in mind. Not that that makes the game better necessarily, but it's good to bare in mind.

I love this game. One really interesting aspect is when you pass priority on your turn without spending your coin to force your opponent to act first. For instance, I pass priority. Opponent: okay I'll ambush these 2 champions into play. Me: I spend my coin to banish all champions on my turn, then I play a 0-cost champion with blitz and attack. Then the next level is pass priority on your turn, and then your opponent passes priority and neither player spends their coin for the turn. This may not sound that interesting, but it adds a level of strategic thought not immediately obvious.

Thanks for the review Tom. Knowing that you guys do not often review the same game multiple times. A fair and balanced opinion. Figured you would like it. 3 things: 1. Decking out in EPIC is a win condition, not a defeat condition like in other games. 2. Something you did not touch on in your review that is relevant is the price of entry compared to other TCG/CCG style games. $14.99 is an extremely economical price point for a "complete" and balanced game, especially when compared to the amount of money and trouble it would take to acquire a "competitive" deck of MtG. And even then that is just one specialized deck, compared to the variety and replay value in just one box of EPIC. 3. Lastly, the one box complete card set model eliminates the card chasing aspect that many players do not enjoy in other games. So, basically as you said, this game is designed for players who want to try something like MtG, want to get to the good parts right away, and do not want to break the bank or spend extra effort and resources running down cards.

I would disagree with you on only one point. I don't think EPIC is a very good game to try on players who have never played MtG. It's taken a lot of patience and effort for me to play (remotely) well. I find it much more difficult to play well than Star Realms, and that game has a great and free app to practice with. With EPIC, I can see why people expecting to grasp it quickly grew frustrated.
@marcoschaub8978

+koomo801 I love Star Realms, but it's one of the simplest deckbuilders there is. I agree that it has much more mass appeal (also because of the app). I don't think you must have played Magic necessarily. There are many more CCGs that can serve as a stepping stone for this. Especially Hearthstone, which is hugely popular.

+koomo801 It is true that learning EPIC takes more effort than learning Star Realms, but this is due to the simplicity and elegance of Star Realms. EPIC is certainly not a complex game, once one learns the terminology and turn sequence, it is quite easy to grasp. Then, playing well is a matter of taking the time to understand the tactical possibilities, effective combinations, etc.

+omikrin1 Well the question is if there is a lot of elegance in Star Realms or if it is simply…. simplicity. For me SR was really “another edition of Ascension” which is an iteration of Dominion. And then for the pure Dominion, I play Dominion. For something evolved out of Dominion and being a great thematic and interactive game I play *Arctic Scavengers* - no need for the SR rubbish.

+Robubie Yeah and its so ferkin quick. If you know the game draft and setup is 10 minutes (draft IS part of the game - it is like real time deck construction!) and then you play 20 minutes and your break is over. So awesome. It really takes out all the slow and slugishness out of MtG, MtG’s business model, and everything around MtG that sucks.

Magic can certainly be played without the "big price tag", take a look at Cube, especially Pauper Cube (which means only commons). Its a custom "set" of magic cards put together with the intend to draft those with friends or your gaming group. Every card is a singleton and depending on the size of your Cube you get tons of replay value. I just finished buying all the singles for Adam Styborskis Pauper Cube, which contains over 400 unique cards, is very well put together, gets constantly updated and, for the amount of playtime you'll get with it, is really cheap (costs about 70€ to buy everything, including sleeves). Thats what i also have to pay for certain boardgames. Honestly, imo its one of the best ways to play Magic the Gathering.

There is actually a "Landless" format of Magic that is more-or-less the same as this, called "Limited Infinity", that has been around for many years now (although not all Magic cards work with this variations, you do need to pre-build a pool - rather than a deck - ahead of time)

It is really important to play this game correctly. The rules as written are not the best. The game itself, once one understands and knows it, is really awesome. The best drafting-MTG replacement and in times of “little time” I can play this (and sadly not ANR, no time). *Recycle does not put it back in your deck. It is an optional trigger: From the rules:* Recycle: To recycle, you may banish two cards in your discard pile. If you do, draw a card.

I'm kinda pleased that you called yourself a Timmy gamer here; I'd recently managed to guess you were a Timmy from various other reviews, such as your recent comments on King of Tokyo in this years top 100. This is not a criticism; I know I'm more of a Jonny (someone who likes combos). It's why I think you don't seem to like Inis as much as you like the other Matagot games - there seems to be no Timmy-escque "Roar Monsters Smash" feeling to it, that you can get in Cyclades or Kemet (or Blood Rage and Cry Havok for that matter). As a side note, I'd be interested in seeing an Inis review or commentary from say Jason. Especially after SUSD rated Inis as being better than Cyclades, Kemet or Blood Rage (They haven't been able to get Cry Havoc yet).

The complaint I often see from people who were expecting something more like Star Realms is that they didn't expect to have to get into deck-building to fully enjoy EPIC. I don't know if they realize that SR is a relatively low-order decision game using ongoing deck-building, as opposed to any (optional) deck-building in EPIC which must entirely occur before play. SR is almost hand-holding in its deck-building, while EPIC deck-building throws its players into some pretty high-level decisions. I love both games and think they're perhaps the two best values in gaming today. But I can certainly understand the stings of the disappointed. As far as the MtG vs EPIC comparison, I think MtG is one of the most brilliant game designs ever. That said, EPIC finally scratches away any lingering MtG itches I had remaining from my intense MtG playtime from over a decade ago.

Epic really isn't played in 10 min, you don't always go all out and attack whenever you can. Tom make it sound simple and plain. Games can be quick but I've played games that has been going for almost 2 hours (3 players) There are many times you hold of on attacks and take the time to think out the best order to play cards and attack. It has that magic the gathering feel, without the stack system and the complicated what triggers first questions.

The ruleset and structure is MUCH easier than Mage Wars for instance, not to speak of the highly complex (and great) Android Netrunner, still both got it wrong (and not only due to bad rules as written/rulebook, but also because they just did not read the rules, obviously).
@lkjkhfggd

For like the first time ever, I agree more with Sam than I do with Tom. I don't like spending more time drafting a deck than actually playing it, I don't like using dice (or something) to represent Zombie/Wolf/whatever tokens since the game didn't come with enough of them, and I don't like how random the game feels. The game does not feel balanced at all, in particular there's this 6/6 flying minion that when she's tapped, the opponent can't attack you, and since they can't attack minions, they just have to pass? Wow. Better draw a spell that deals 6 damage from your random drafted deck...
@LuceChantil
@LuceChantil 8 жыл бұрын
+lkjkhfggd That card (Avenging Angel) can seem strong but put in context I find it weaker then the average card. Out of 120 cards there are 38 that can directly deal with it either by killing it or blocking and killing it in the air. Then there are the 8 cards that can return a kill spell or champion that can deal with it. 25 other cards can be part of a 2 shot to kill it as well. (53 cards also have ways to draw cards to hit the answers you need.) So, over half of the cards in the game can deal with that card to an extent (not including card draw), and since it doesn't do anything immediately when it comes into play you might get 1-for-1ed on your turn. A lot of other cards basically guarantee at least a 2-for-1 (Kong, Dark Assassin, Psionic Assault, Winter Fairy, etc.) So yes, Avenging Angel is very strong and if unanswered can control a game, but it is so fragile it might do nothing, and shouldn't stay around for long. Random 30 could put it into a situation where it is more powerful then usual but in the 30 card pre-made faction decks and drafting I generally don't want to play it and risk getting behind. Granted I spend way more time then most people thinking about all of this stuff.
@lkjkhfggd
@lkjkhfggd 8 жыл бұрын
Well, you've obviously looked at the game more than I will ever bother doing, so I will trust that your judgement on that particular card is correct. That doesn't change my opinion on the game though. What do you find about it that makes it more fun than Magic or even Hearthstone?
@LuceChantil
@LuceChantil 8 жыл бұрын
+lkjkhfggd There are quite a few things I like more than Magic, Hearthstone, Sol Forge and a few other card games (a lot of time over the years spent playing those 3). Ignoring the pricing model which is what originally attracted me to this game, the game play feels a lot better to me for a few reasons. As we've established I spent a lot of time with this game so this could get long and you asked for it. Some of this deals with competitive playing which is what I am more interested in. (Please at least read the numbered lines [9]. For a bit more read the lettered lines too [18]. Feel free to skip the explanations and descriptions after the lettered lines.) 1) Coin every turn as opposed to lands or automatically growing crystal pool. a) Each card in Epic has to be balanced around either 1 coin or free so each card needs to be a lot closer in power then say a 1 crystal card vs a 10 crystal card. This means that instead of cards growing in power as a way to add diversity to the game, Epic has to provide a large pool of cards that are all very good but in different ways. This makes the game more interesting to me and prevents me from getting blown out by an aggro deck (aggro decks do exist in Epic) or just straight up losing if my opponent is able to get out a 7+ mana card or the 10 crystal Varian into Ysera, Emperor, Hellscream (or the 15 damage Alexstrasa play). b) You can play any card in your hand starting on turn 1 instead of being tied to growing resources. For example, in hearthstone a turn might look like "I have 4 crystals and 5 cards in hand one of which is Piloted Shredder, 3 are 5 or more crystals and one is a 0-cost spell. I guess I'll play Shredder." The same thing can happen in Magic. Epic on the other hand is much more, I have 3 awesome one cost cards and a couple zeros. My opponent has x on the board, y cards in hand, z in discard pile, and a cards in deck. I have b, c, d, and e respectively, which of these cards would be best to play in this situation and do I want to use a 0-cost card? c) I'm almost as powerful on my turn as your turn and I have some ability to react to and mitigate what you do. On my turn, I generally want to play a champion that gets me further ahead or pass (will explain passing later). On my opponent's turn, I generally want to either slow their momentum or draw cards (stay ahead). They play a few cards to make a massive alpha strike, I want to have a board wipe available that doesn't need to be played on my turn. They play and swing with Avenging Angel, I want to kill it. In Hearthstone, if I play against a face hunter there is only so much I can do to stop it since most of the damage (charge or direct) I cannot prevent. In Magic if I miscalculate and tap out, I can just lose (I do not mind this nearly as much). d) No mana screw or flood and no starting with a hand of only 5+ crystal cards 2) Attacking an opponent with either single champions or groups throughout the turn a) You can make more interesting plays because the turn and attacking is more flexible. In Magic, you get one attack phase where you can choose which champions to attack based on what you know of the current board state. Then your opponent chooses to block and might be able to do something unexpected. In Epic, you can break up your attacks to test your opponent and draw out removal before attacking again. Attack (while holding your coin), see if they use their coin and how they block, then potentially send follow up attackers or play cards etc. In other words, it seems like just a deeper version of Magic combat. b) Both players make choices in combat. Hearthstone turns combat into a dance between removal and damage with every minion kill-able over multiple attacks or something to ignore. I don't want my opponent choosing how my stuff dies in combat, I want to have a bit more agency in combat, and I dislike permanent damage. 3) Not playing any cards on a turn can be the best and most interesting move. a) Passing priority without spending your coin while you are ahead forces your opponent to spend their coin first and create an opening for you, or they stay behind. In addition you still draw and can attack that turn. b) If your opponent passes priority on their turn without spending their coin, you can pass too and end the turn. So if your opponent isn't that far ahead, you can prevent them from getting further ahead by not creating an opening. 4) Drafting is absolutely incredible (far exceeding Hearthstone Arena and exceeding Magic limited imo) a) In Epic every card is designed to be good and playable This means that when drafting it is really painful when 2+ cards show up and you want them both, but you will have to give your opponent the chance to get 1 of them anyway. There are no specifically bad cards included in packs to give better drafters an advantage (as is the case with Magic), and there is no all 3 cards are crap for multiple picks when my opponent pulls 4 Hearthstone Flamestrikes. b) You need to draft a solid deck for yourself while countering your opponent's draft. In the reveal 4 draft method Tom Vasel highlighted in this video, since both of you are simultaneously building decks with complete knowledge of what your opponent is getting, you can take cards to make your deck more synergistic, counter what your opponent is doing, deny them cards, and force them to take other cards. I love out drafting an opponent and then beating them; it makes me feel really smart (which is why a good number of people play Magic). 5) It does not rely on additional random effects a) Hearthstone: Piloted Shredder, Unstable Portal, Dr. Boom etc. I do not find these fun. I don't want to win or lose because an incredibly unlikely thing I can't control happened. Oh his Piloted Shredder popped out milhouse and my Sneed's Shredder gave me Edwin VanCleef, sigh. Turn 5 Antonidas from portal in a Flamewalker deck, gg. 6) I like the 4 factions with loyalty 2 and ally more than Magic colors and Hearthstone Classes a) In Epic you can literally play any card in any deck but some get considerably stronger by matching faction. In drafts and messing around with constructed, I generally try to get 1 or 2 max colors that I try to hit ally and loyalty 2 in, and the rest of my deck consists of just straight up good cards. I draft a Dark Assassin and a Murderous Necromancer, my deck is going to have a lot of Evil to get those effects. I am also still going to get that Erase, Flame Strike, and Palace Guard because I can and don't have to worry about drawing my splashed mountains to play them. 7) Modal cards, specifically Draw 2 |or| x, are awesome. a) Hand management is ridiculously important in Epic and there are a lot of ways to maintain it. In a lot of situations, it can be tempting to just play all of your big stuff first and play everything immediately, but if you do, you can put yourself into a situation where you do not have the option to play a card every turn. If this happens, you will be in trouble. Even if you include some cards like Bitten and Inner Demon so you can use their removal 3 times out of 5, being able to draw two instead is incredibly helpful. 8) The large number of mass removal spells work well in this a) Mass Removal in this is great for punishing over-extending, getting back into the game, and stopping huge attacks that come out of nowhere. 9) I prefer the starting hand size and mulligan rules a) Better than Magic because you can keep the good stuff instead of drawing less and still potentially being mana-screwed/flooded b) Better than Hearthstone because you have more playable decisions from turn 1. Conclusion: The gist is I am incredibly competitive, and I believe Epic provides the best and most fun experience to really sink my teeth into. In addition, I'm not going to drop $700 for a single competitive standard Magic deck at the low end. I want more people to play it because I want bigger tournaments, but I can understand if people, looking for a game to sit down and play every once in awhile, do not like it as much as I do. There is definitely a lot of game there for $15 though.

+lkjkhfggd That card isn't really a problem at all because the game has way more removal cards/board wipe cards than MTG and Hearthstone for example. Means it'll die pretty quickly. Also a 6/6 is not a massive creature for that game and it usually has to keep attacking every turn to keep getting tapped for the special ability to work. If you get your own fliers it's pretty easy to block and kill it. There's so much removal in the game that drawing those is an easier option. Most big spells (ones that cost a gold coin) also have an option to choose between the specific effect of that spell or drawing 2 cards instead so it's quite easy to get card draw to go digging for answers faster when you really need it. So that 6/6 angel is definitely not an overpowered card, even though it can have a strong effect. It's just too easy to have a card in your hand that does 12 damage to a creature or just kills every creature on the board. I think a bigger problem with the game is how easy it is to just dump 1 big creature every turn and then lose it to a board wipe when the enemy has 3 of them in his hand. Especially when playing multiplayer games. Player 1: Big creature! Player 2: Big creature! Player 3: Massive creature! Player 4: "Hmm, I've got this board wipe. I'll play a tiny creature with a neat power so losing it won't matter so much. I'll let those guys fight each other and if anybody attacks me I'll cast my 'Wrath of God' so everything dies and everybody lost their big creature!" It's too easy to nullify anything that's happening on the board because everybody is gonna have a few complete boardwipes in their deck which all cost the same 1 gold to cast.

I think having the high power level goes both ways, ie you have the cards that destroy creatures that are not really printed in MtG available all the time. To it's credit I saw a video where a bunch of high level magic pros were playing this between rounds at a tournament.

I haven't seen the review yet, but once again, the "lambasting" of Sam was not really about the negative review per se and more about the fact that it was just a "bad" review. It was out of sync with what the vast majority of Dice Tower reviews feel like. I don't care if it's negative or positive, but I do care about some sense of balance in the analysis of the game. The game was obviously not for him, but he made absolutely no effort to try to imagine that maybe some people may indeed like it. I believe it's the "holier than thou" dismisiveness that was out of character. It's sort of like Tom's review of The Gallerist (also Kickstarted). Not a very positive review, but at least a recognition that it'll probably be great for some people (me!). Sam didn't even try and that's where most of the criticism comes from. Now, if you want to continue in your cynicism and think that people really care about one bad review of a game that was $15 on Kickstarter, please, do go on... 😉

+Twincast I don’t think so. You can just try it and you will see how different it plays. It is a lot about control as well. If you play 2x 1-gold card you cannot “react” and cannot “control”. It is not MtG with LIFO but has a very very good and fixed structure with windows of opportunities.

Want a 1 sentence review? Epic is Magic, but for smarter people. White Wizard Games is a predatory company with annoying business models. But the products removed from them are sound. I am unsure why this exact game baffles Dice Tower description or the ability to relay information. The words: "Derivative", Flexible, etc can be used. This system is both a Draft and Deck Construction game, like MtG. The difference did that it has timing restrictions to keep rule headaches down and focus more on skill and preparedness. As basically a LCG, it is more affordable and like Keyforge, it addresses MtG's and outdated distribution and finicky bloat.

The game type should've been "dueling card game" or something. "Trdading card style" doesn't make sense.

Cards cost 1 or 0. You can have as many cards in your deck as you want, but considering that running out of cards is a win condition there doesn't seem to be a good reason to have more than the minimum required.

Hi, Each experience will give you more tools to create something new and unique, so play more tabletop games, read more books, travel more... Find playtesters for your game. Hire a professional illustrator. Use commas. Read the book "The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Second Edition" by Jesse Schell, or other similar. Good luck! :)

+pdbedlion Imagine Magic but without lands and every card in the deck is a rare or mythic. Think turn one Kalitas, Bloodchief of Get. It doesn't have the depth of Magic, so it's more of a filler type game in my opinion.

+Gast Magic requires you to understand how to construct a successful mana curve based on deck archetype and colors included. Epic lets you play with any combination of cards. Magic restricts which cards you can play on your turn and your opponent's based on lands in play during your turn. Epic lets you play any card on your turn and any event/champion with ambush on your opponent's. Magic cards are balanced around converted mana costs and there are cards at each cmc almost strictly better than others. Epic cards are balanced around 1-coin or free and vary more in utility then power. Magic lets you attack once with one main phase before and one main phase after. Epic lets you break up your attacks into any number with any number of "main" phases before, after, and in-between. In magic, you have to learn and understand the restrictions so you can make the best of a limited number of plays. In Epic, you have to understand the plays to select the best from many. In my opinion, the rules for Epic are simpler, but the strategy is deeper because it is less restricted.

No no. I understand how the game works. I just don't see it being a worthwhile $15 dollars to spend when I can do much of the same mechanisms with what I already have. I'm not saying it is a bad game. In fact, I think it would be fun to play. But the reason it looks fun is because it's mostly Magic. Also, I wouldn't necessarily say that restrictions make a game less creative or fun. Those restrictions let you test things while keeping you grounded. I prefer that when I'm doing a lot of different creative activities. (Writing, painting, filming) They let me fully flesh out those restrictions without letting the mind wander on useless tangents. That being said, with the simple casting of Epic, I feel there is less risk. And that's good. :) I don't like holding onto a huge creature that I didn't plan mana for. However, the reward for pulling of that huge creature or awesome combo, for me, is so much higher than saying I played this for 1 and all of these for 0. And that's because, I did it with those limitations and restrictions. I learned and used those limitations to defeat you. To sum up my feelings: Epic doesn't look like a bad game. Just not one I need to get. I wish it would have done something else to vary the Magic formula. It's too similar for me. I feel the same way about many "variants" of chess. (Also thanks for not jumping down my throat with attacks and harsh words. :D)

+pdbedlion I definitely see where you are coming from because I love games because they are a way to be creative within an environment defined by rules. And yes, the game is very similar to Magic. If you are satisfied with Magic (a great game) then I can see you passing on this. For me, I grew tired of Magic's pricing model which restricted me from competing in constructed formats at a level I wanted, so I tried out Epic. To my very pleasant surprise I found a similar game that I like better. In Epic I get that same feeling of "I pulled off this awesome combo or got out this huge creature" when I play a card I have been holding onto for multiple turns as I have manipulated the board into the perfect state to play it. Just because you can play everything immediately doesn't mean you aren't rewarded for timing a play perfectly.

+pdbedlion Why? Because it is INSPIRED by MTG. It has creatures, spells and 2 to 8 wizards fighting each others, all done via drawing cards each turn. That’s it. There it stops. Everything else might remind you of MtG but really plays differently.

I didn't know this played like Magic when I bought it. I liked Star Realms so I bought it. I should have looked into it more. I hate Magic The Gathering. Now I'm looking to sell it. But I can't even do that so I'll end up giving it away.
