No diagonal bracing going from upper outer corner to lower inner corner? Want that baby to be in compression not tension. That's #1 way to support a door long term and keep it level. The metal braces will help but I don't think they accomplish the same.

Those brackets will definitely do the trick, but a compression diagonal brace is the most cost effective repair that works really well. Others may have said these brackets won't last long, but they are just wrong. They will last longer than the wood for sure....just a bit pricier than the aforementioned diagonal
@mehrrepairz Жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely correct. The brackets are 10x more expensive and definitely not as cost effective. I also agree that the brackets hill hold far past the cedar. Most people never use the brackets because they’re way more expensive. Human nature dictates that you’re scared of what you don’t know. I saw the same thing in my comment section when I posted electrical videos using Wago lever nuts. It was a battle between US and European electricians. The US electricians swore that they’d burn down houses….. however, there was no data or evidence to support those claims. Largely anecdotal. The US electricians just don’t have the 2-3 decades of experience with lever nuts that the European sparky’s do so they immediately discredited the lever nut as dangerous. In reality, the EU sparkys are correct that it’s just as safe as wire nuts; however, lever nuts are also more expensive, so you likely won’t see that rhetoric translate to the US anytime soon. Long story long, I agree :)

You'll still have a saggy gate in about a year or so. Learn how to use lap joints and wood glue as well as a proper angle brace. Your gate will never sag if you build it properly. Not to mention that, when building a gate like you did, the top board goes all the way across and the side boards go all the way down, while the bottom board is supposed to be between the two side boards. The way you have it, water is going to sit on the top of the bottom board ends and rot the ends of the bottom board as well as the bottom ends of the two side boards. Also, those are the absolute wrong hinges to use. They are too small and will not provide the proper support needed to keep the gate straight. The ones you have on there before were the proper hinges, but the washers were missing, to the lag screw head pulled through. But hey, you liked rebuilding a poorly built gate once, you can perform that again next year.
