No diagonal bracing going from upper outer corner to lower inner corner? Want that baby to be in compression not tension. That's #1 way to support a door long term and keep it level. The metal braces will help but I don't think they accomplish the same.
@mehrrepairz

If you look closely the metal brackets have metal cross braces. Not the entire length of gate but it’s sturdy. It also doesn’t allow for a wooden cross brace since it’d interfere. I can keep you posted on how it holds up.

Cross brace is always the way to go. Corner brackets will last a few years, but nothing supporting the length with such a long gate will sag quicker than you think. For longer gates I like two corner brackets and a cross brace, it’s held up my seven foot gate for five years no dramas.

Those supports will work for a year or two but will ultimately fail. You can acc a compression support in the way of an angled support from bottom hinge side to top latch side, or you can use a tension method and attach a gate support cable from top of hinge side to bottom of latch side.

Those brackets will definitely do the trick, but a compression diagonal brace is the most cost effective repair that works really well. Others may have said these brackets won't last long, but they are just wrong. They will last longer than the wood for sure....just a bit pricier than the aforementioned diagonal
@mehrrepairz
@mehrrepairz Жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely correct. The brackets are 10x more expensive and definitely not as cost effective. I also agree that the brackets hill hold far past the cedar. Most people never use the brackets because they’re way more expensive. Human nature dictates that you’re scared of what you don’t know. I saw the same thing in my comment section when I posted electrical videos using Wago lever nuts. It was a battle between US and European electricians. The US electricians swore that they’d burn down houses….. however, there was no data or evidence to support those claims. Largely anecdotal. The US electricians just don’t have the 2-3 decades of experience with lever nuts that the European sparky’s do so they immediately discredited the lever nut as dangerous. In reality, the EU sparkys are correct that it’s just as safe as wire nuts; however, lever nuts are also more expensive, so you likely won’t see that rhetoric translate to the US anytime soon. Long story long, I agree :)

You'll still have a saggy gate in about a year or so. Learn how to use lap joints and wood glue as well as a proper angle brace. Your gate will never sag if you build it properly. Not to mention that, when building a gate like you did, the top board goes all the way across and the side boards go all the way down, while the bottom board is supposed to be between the two side boards. The way you have it, water is going to sit on the top of the bottom board ends and rot the ends of the bottom board as well as the bottom ends of the two side boards. Also, those are the absolute wrong hinges to use. They are too small and will not provide the proper support needed to keep the gate straight. The ones you have on there before were the proper hinges, but the washers were missing, to the lag screw head pulled through. But hey, you liked rebuilding a poorly built gate once, you can perform that again next year.

@mehrrepairz lmao what. How much time did it take? How much did it cost for you to do a shitty job vs hiring a carpenter to do it right? There are even carpenters in your comments telling you how you should've done it, and you brush them off
@mehrrepairz

@@EC-ol6ck it’s not rocket science my guy. These are “keyboard carpenters.” Did you check their licenses? I have carpenters who work for me on flips who swear by the brackets. These brackets much more expensive than a simple 2x4 so a lot of DIY don’t have experience. You’re scared of what you don’t know! Watch how US electricians bash Wago Lever nuts claiming they cause fires with absolutely no data… and the European sparky’s (who’ve used them for 2-3 decades) swear by them because they’re better…. Because they are… Truth is that you don’t know anything about construction… less about social media… and nothing about being a landlord. To enlighten you, take a look at any of the top social media accounts of licensed tradesman. People are always criticizing in the comments. I’ve seen people trying to correct Paul Sellers on woodworking 😂. You should also do me a favor and research something until you turn blue… spend every dollar you have in your savings…. And check the comments. I GUARANTEE you there will be people unhappy with your approach. A lot of the bigger pages now switched to being pure salesman that just post tools you should buy. Look at Kreuger Construction on insta. It’s basically QVC for construction bros. Not my style… not interesting enough… For the total cost breakdown is in the second video. Don’t be lazy, go look at it. Then let me know what “typical landlord” is spending on a pure cedar gate. Not a single piece of pressure treated wood was used. It also took about a day to build out with details and staining. Last bit of advice, Instead of regurgitating a catch phrase to fit a popular narrative, try to think for yourself. You’ll do much better in life. 👍🏽

You didn't use the old fence as an omage you did it because you're cheap ... No diagonal support ...😮
@mehrrepairz

Yes. Using $60 brackets and all cedar wood is a “cheap move.” Taking more time and effort to resaw a piece of the old fence was more inexpensive than using a $3 cedar picket. You caught me
