I would not have used brick powder mortar on diagonal brick design. It looks finished but also fake at same time. Every time I share the picture with someone I am compelled to explain the construction of the diagonal because few would see the extent of your crafting it as opposed to just laying it on top of a brick wall. Beautifully done, though!
@danwaterson3565 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing the video with others. I hadn't considered it looking like applied decoration 🤔🫤. My thought process was that to have angled mortar joints intersecting each diamond would have looks too busy, and draw the eye away from the horizontal courses of brick which are inline with each other. You must have a designers eye, most wouldn't see the minutae! 👍

Having been a bricklayer for many years, (I used to do a lot of work for English Heritage and the National Trust), I must say this video was a joy to watch. It brought back so many memories. I used to love repairing all the old buildings, fancy arches, garden walls with fancy piers and such. People were amazed what you can do with the right bricks and the time to cut and shape the bricks to make beautiful things as you have done here. I left brickwork because I got bored with the square boxes that seem to be the norm these days. But I do miss projects like this. The satisfaction when you stand back and look at the finished job is a feeling I can still remember to this day. Excellent work. P.S. leave the capping as is. Less is more. Thanks, the tip I’ve taken from the video is using the laser and trowel to level the curved wall I’ll be using it next time I build a curved wall regarding the flat wall ties I did some time working in germany they had similar stainless steel ones very popular the tip I got from Dean from Reading was bend them to about an eighty degree L shape and after laying the block slide the tie in with the L up and because it’s over 90 when you push the bottom tight to the wall the top edge will be tight against the wall and not catch your hands as you work
@danwaterson3566 ай бұрын
@@peterthebricky Nice one, that would keep the ties out of the way. I had no idea whether the ties would align, as the reclaimed bricks varied from 69-75mm thick. I would've referred wire brick ties, but just can't get them in NZ.

First class. Renovating my 200 yr old stable yard and gates showed the skill of the old boys. In the tudor style, rubbed bricks, broken specials with hair thin mortar to use them and ground brick dust were all there. Bricklaying is one of the most satisfying and challenging of jobs but it never ceases to amaze how accurate we can be by eye and with basic tools. When I built my house, all the correct coins to ward off spirits were put into the corners, fireplaces and chimneys. I am not a professional but 50 years on, the glow of hand made swanage brick and flush white lime mortar with local grit sand stands true. Of course I can still see all the little errors. Thank you posting.

I've done a decent amount of brick work here in philly, but; and I don't say this lightly, YOU ARE A BEAST! Doing all that by yourself! I know union bricklayers I'd say you're right there with them...

Using a bucket to measure the sand and cement will give you a consistent mix. It takes a bit longer to put into buckets. But it’s worth it for a uniformed finish 😊
@danwaterson3566 ай бұрын
Great tip, thanks. Consistency is the key (which is why I like the Trade Mortar as it guarantees 12.5MPa strength after 28 days). I guess you could use a bucket to measure water also.

@danwaterson3566 ай бұрын
No not a trowel, just a keen DIYer. Picked up the basics from my neighbour in the UK (who was a brickie) some 30 years ago and I've dabbled in a few projects over the years. You're right, there are some videos on the tube which are lacking....! All the best looking after your partner.

Thanks. We’ve had some pretty intense rain over the past week, and I’m pleased to see the overhang working very well as a drip edge. I will be sealing the brick as a precaution, but with only occasional light frost here I’m not concerned too much.

Reminds about the very classy brickwork, with various (always glazed) special bricks, mouldings, profiles, various colours, you can see on Swedish houses from the 1800:s... Smaller towns often had wood houses, the cities required brick, which.often was very nice & fancy, even for the working classes (which could have e.g. 1 floor brick, 2 floors wood, slightly smaller in scale, otherwise same styles as for the wealthy).... 1900 there were around 500 brickyards in Sweden, using circular kilns where a worker were supposed to move 104000 bricks per week, in and out of the Kiln, each stone 4,5 kg, totally around 47 tons. Temp around 70° C, and the work described as "As close to Hell as you will ever get"... I can imagine, in those days, you could order any kind of special brick for your project, in small amounts & handmade and it would not be expensive... One of the traditional kilns still exist, Bältarbro Tegelbruk. I guess, mighty expensive today...
@danwaterson3565 ай бұрын
Hallå and thanks for comment. Swedish architecture is often quite spectactular but I'm glad we've moved away from those horrendous working conditions! It sounds appalling, but I guess that was the norm back in the day. Bältarbro Tegelbruk looks very similar to the derelict brickworks around England. I guess the technology was the same no matter the location.

You are an artist, sir. Reminds me so much of the beautiful decorative 19th century brickwork on so many buildings in Oxford, which I have always admired. Why have dull run-of-mill architecture (for that is essentially what this is) when you can have something creative and playful. I applaud your artistic achievement; bravo!

I wish detailed beautiful work like this was the norm. I live in Birmingham and love the care old masons and stone workers used to take on pattern work and decorative elememts the lift buildings from functional to beautiful. The old railway works, train stations and telecom buildings have some mind bending brickwork on them. Love the video
@danwaterson3566 ай бұрын
Thanks. There are some stunning buildings hidden around the UK, harking back to the Industrial Age. Architectural minimalism has its place, but nothing beats quality crafted design.
@paulhammond74896 ай бұрын
Looks fantastic, and IMHO it was well worth the effort it took to complete it. I'm not sure about the weather extremes at your property, but if you ever get frosts at your elevation you may want to consider the effects of frost spalling to the surface of those cut bricks. Especially where you sanded those lovely decorative curves, as you may have opened the pores of the brick substrate, if so that will likely wick in rain water, if there is no frost you will avoid most spalling, but if you have frost you may want to investigate a clear 'brush-on sealer'. A clear sealer will not spoil the brick finish , but it will dramatically reduce ingress of water and spalling by freeze/thaw events. NB: Just found your channel and subscribed after watching this one episode. Keep up the great work and don't worry about the pace of new videos
@danwaterson3566 ай бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to comment, and the great tip. I hadn’t thought about using a sealer. I’m about 110m elevation but do get the occasional morning frost now and again. A bit of spalling would just add to the character, but I think I’ll take your advice and seal it. Thanks for the subscription; I’m new to this filming/editing game so I’m hoping with experience I’ll get faster at editing (20-30 hours per video is a little excessive!)
@paulhammond74896 ай бұрын
@@danwaterson356 Glad to be joining your journey. A light frost probably won't do much harm, and as you say any spalling will certainly add a bit of character to the wall. I'll be spending time and catch up with your earlier content.
