That 2.3 put in more work in the hour and a half of fuckery than it did its entire life prior.

Those engines are just awesome! I have a 1998, so it's a 2.5 flavor. Bought mine in 2012 as a salvaged truck with 91000KM, stil got it, now slightly past 180000KM. I blew the headgasket a few years ago overcookin it by passing a "driving f*cking miss Daisy" Ontarian on my way back from work, but it was worth it, otherwise I'd still be driving behind him as we speak.... Anywho, I tore the engine appart, and the gasket's fire rings blew between #2 and #3 but strangely, the head was straight.... Bought a headgasket and headbolts for like 80$ CAD shipped, and the thing is still going strong, even if I drive it like it's a rice rocket (those ontarians like to drive 30km/h under the limit until they see a dotted line coming up, so I gotta get it in the ketchup!) although I think I may have the common problem of receiding valve seats. If I rev it too high when cold, it'll run on 2-3 cylinders and die at stop signs, but when the engine warms up and the oil thins up, the hydraulic lifters bleed off more quickly and all is well... All that being said, I've been plannig to replace it for a couple of years, but the thing just won't die or get bad enough to junk it! Like I always said, the Ford Ranger is the true Honda Civic of pickups!

Mine has 405k km. It’s a 97 with the 4.0. Rear wheel drive and manual transmission is the best possible drive train that will last forever

What a good little motor! My 86 ranger has 300k miles maybe 400k ive rolled the odo twice. Its got the 2.3 lima I have hauled 1200 lbs of scrap a few times with it. Little bastard feels the same loaded or empty, its a loyal little pickup. This gives me hope it can live forever.

Glad you said that. My 96 Mazda b2300 has the 8 spark plug 2.3 with the 5 speed manual. Whether the truck is loaded or empty, it accelerates the same. I thought that was weird.. Torquey little bastard.

We had one in a piece of equipment, it had a coolant leak and the operators never told us. They ran it until it stopped running. Broke the timing belt because the cam seized up. Broke the cam free, new timing belt and fixed the coolant leak and it’s still running. Had to do 5 oil changes pretty much back to back because the oil was thicker than roofing tar from being overheated so badly for so long.

BTW, did you know that a Volvo B234F twin cam head will bolt on those Lima 4 banger Ford engines? With some mods of course! My dream build would be a 2.5 block, with a Volvo head and a turbo! I know it would be cheaper to swap in an Explorer 5.0, but I but I bet a single cab, 6 foot bed Ranger with a boosted 4 banger would make a sick autocross truck!

What you have to do is drill a hole in one of the intake runners, attach a hose, needs to be fairly air tight, and after you beat it properly, but before it seizes, open the valve and get as much water as you can in ONE cylinder while at the highest RPM you can get out of it, one fills with water and 3 or however many more is involved, will continue running and try to compress that water, or spit parts in spectacular fashion..
@fexploder328110 ай бұрын
Needless to say, this video is proof that this engine will last a very long time and be able to take an enormous amount of abuse.

Only reason you were able to kill that 2.3 is because it already had 20 years of someone driving it around town . My dad only drove ford rangers . Only with the 2.3 . From his 198something with a 2 barrel Holley 4x4 with stack exhaust . To a 1997 with the double plug head . Most his trucks had 300k miles not kilomooses ..
