As a foreigner who lived in Argentina from 2016-20 I completely agree with everything that Prof G said - too many quotable quotes to re-quote

Ok, let me get this straight. Scott goes from interviewing Mike Birbiglia to being a reference on Last Week Tonight. Street cred is going exponential.

I got hit hard early in the pandemic (alpha-wave put me in the Hospital for 38 days (16 of those in ICU on a Ventilator). Even having been through that very near death experience,. I do think the Pandemic was one of the better things that could have happened. My only fear now is that we (humans) are to timid to make the bold changes we should be making (lessons the pandemic tried to teach us). Businesses need to change and modernize. The concept of "downtowns' needs to fail and be re-architected as something new. Remote Work and WFH are here to stay. So any company that doesn't embrace that is making a mistake.

Was kind of surprised of the google app store ruling: On Android other app stores are at least allowed, so if you don't want to pay the 30%, you can distribute your app outside the google play store. Might not really be viable because pretty much nobody uses them, but at least they exist. Apple doesn't even allow any alternative app stores on iOS, so I'd have expected Epic to have a way stronger case there....

Using the CPI for inflation can apparently be misleading - in an interview with Meb Faber, Felix Zuhaus shared that the government has consistently shifted and removed entire categories in ways that make inflation look less dire (healthcare expenditures, food, energy, etc.). Also loved the brief cameo of your fuzzy friend, Scott :)

Agree with Scott, Alphabet is going to boom in 2024, also with Waymo silently rolling out in many cities. But really unsure how this will pan out short-term, as it seems to ruin their search ads business.

7:08 Jerome Powell had nothing to do with government spending and isolationism. Blowing a bubble bigger does not make for a stronger economy. Same thing I said with Trump - spending money doesn't mean you're richer.
@bingoSK9 Жыл бұрын
Does Powell really have credit in this? If there is no recession, its more likely because the workforce has changed and there 2 generational forces driving spending. 1) A good chunk of the laborforce is being sapped into the global online economy rather than traditionnal jobs. So their income is not necessarily affected to US monetary policies. 2) Lots of boomers are retiring, also adding strain to an already hot job market, but mainly those people are spending regardless of monetary policy. 3) Most younger workers are no longer saving to buy houses because they lost hope they even could. So they are also spending. No wonder company earnings are still strong despite quatitative tightening.

How do you reconcile high gdp growth with massive layoffs in high income tech roles? Id love to be able to reconcile it. High earning job disappearing and economic growth. Also, What is your opinion of Sundar Pichai. IMO, he’s the worst CEO of all large tech companies… late to AI, no new products and bad lawsuits all over.
@guru47pi Жыл бұрын
This may help reconcile the two: Ask yourself how long were those laid-off tech workers unemployed after their layoffs? I know many, many tech folks who have been laid off as startups fail w/rising interest rates, but everyone I know who looked for a job found one within a couple of weeks, and that's reinforced by the 1.2% unemployment rate for software developers. It's similarly low for other tech jobs. Creative destruction of individual firms doesn't necessarily mean an unhealthy economy; it's only a problem if the rate of loss exceeds the rate of job creation.
