The Arch Vile was aiming for another demon (probably the Cyberdemon), you shot it during the last second of its attack phase (accidentally it seems as it looks like you were aiming for another target) and as a result it turned its attention and attack to you. That's what sent you back and into the water. Demons are fickle beasts...

Are you talking about what happened at 5:54? It was an arch-vile. If you watch at 0.25x speed you can see the arch-vile on the right turn and face decino as it finishes its attack. decino was unfortunate enough to shoot the archvile while it was infighting, which made it instantly switch targets to him and blast him off the ledge.
