In 2023/24 I lived in Porto for about 6 months while studying. (Also a vid on my channel about it 😉) It really is such a photogenic city, but really overtouristed and many expats moving in which has driven up rent prices for local Portuguese, sadly. Some of my mates from uni told me that no Portuguese live in Porto anymore. In fact Gaia as it’s known has more residents than Porto city. I try to express to people whenever we talk about Portugal to try and avoid airbnb and book hotels since at least they pay tax dollars locally and that can help the city a little bit. It really deserves it

Thanks for sharing and a great place to study I'm sure. I wasn't helping but yes it was very touristy for sure, very busy at times even in February.

That must be absolutely gut-wrenching to see those rolls came out blank, but I am glad you were so positive about it and use that as an motivation to go back. I love the photo on the bridge that you caught the maintenance workers, as well as those high contrast wide shot from up high, it really showcase what Kentmere does best. I do wish to bring my 21mm more often, but the TTa 1.5 is massive, although I do have some idea for a slight more compact wide less for future trip

Hello Matt! It was nice meeting you last Saturday at the D. Luís Bridge. You were super friendly, and I really appreciate you taking the time to chat-I hope I wasn’t bothering you! It was great to see you enjoying the city, though I’m really sorry that you lost so many of your shots. Hope you get some nice light next time!

The visoflex is GREAT. On the Viso III there are 3 options: yellow dot - fast mirror breakaway-and-return for rapid action; black dot - slow, gentle mirror rise and fall for long exposures; red dot - mirror lock-up out of light path for vibration-free close-ups and photomicrographs. Obviously the arm has to be up, not set down on the shutter button as you did. Your previews video made me buy the chimney finder and an Elmar 65mm for macro... DAMN!

Yes ,very disappointing to have equipment fail on a great location. I had a lens fail in Yellowstone National Park some years ago. I definitely learned to test equipment first before a major occasion. BTW how is your review of the LLL 50mm f2 ridgid coming? I'd like to see what you have to say about it before I possibly purchase it...thanks.

Reminds me my first attempt to use Zenit 20y ago... High school fashion session with a designer/stylist and a model... I loaded the film like the automated point-&-shoot without securing the leader. I still remember how the tech in the lab was afraid to share this with me...

MATT : this is a good video , it shows a city ewe would all love to visit , more of your personality , and then the realities we face as photographers. Good all round video here. I like trains , or the ghost's of them , and ( shamefully ) collect Brass locomotives , yes fine hand made mechanical delights that are scale replica's. The detail and the grain in these images are incredibly beautiful. And yes ; check the adjust on that " plunger " lever. I have been studying that device , and you just exposed a failure to the unaware.

If you want to look through the lens to take pics, put down the Leicas already and use your FM3a! It's a far far better SLR camera than some janky cobbled together workaround Leica method. Heck, there's a reason Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Pentax all ditched rangefinders decades ago and switched to SLRs. They just work better and more accurately!
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Сағат бұрын
Thanks, yes I hear you but I love experimenting with these old lenses (and you can't do WLF with FM3a.. I'd have to use my F3 like my Lisbon trip)

I love Porto! So much more enjoyable than Lisbon to me. When you go again be sure to check out the Trolley Museum and the Photography Museum. How did you get the film through the airport I scanned? We flew through Heathrow last year on our way to Lisbon and they absolutely refused to hand check my 10 rolls of 120 film. All ruined.🙁
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Сағат бұрын
Hi, yes I think I now prefer to Lisbon too. I'll go back to re-do this trip. Sorry about your film. If the rounded CT scanners yes you need to hand check, if the more square older scanners B&W film can go through with less issues (some base fog but not so bad).

as far as foma film goes, fomapan 100 is the one I got the most consistant and best performance from. The 400 one works best if you rate it 250, if not you get thin negatives. These may print okay in the darkroom but are annoying to scan in my personal experience
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Сағат бұрын
Yes I used to love Fomapan 100 but now prices are more than Kentmere it's a no brainer to move to Kentmere which is a far better film on all levels. Yes Foma 400 gave me thin negs at 400 too when I tried it.

Well,what a relief: you made mistakes. I was afraid that you were perfect, beyond blemish or fault. It is nice to know you are mortal. Hey, I see you winding the cassette spool tight after the initial load of film. I used to do the same thing but now wonder why. After a few advances the cassette film is tight. And winding it too tight can cause scratches. So why do we do it? All that aside, I always enjoy your videos and usually learn something valuable, too. Thanks for that.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Сағат бұрын
Thanks Sandy, I wind it tight to get a few extra frames but good point about too tight so I'll do slightly less in future. Yes I'm a very regular guy for sure and with blemishes when my skin is playing up haha.
