An ancestor of mine was Charles Ingersoll who made his name with the "dollar (pocket) watch" (Ingersoll Watches). The brand has been sold several times, but it is always fun to find versions and adverts from the early days. Proud of that heritage and nice to see your respect for the old style! Cheers!

Great watch vid! Always good to see someone who share multiple interest as myself! The Hamilton Railroad expo back had to be a mod right? I doubt they had expo case back from back in the day. I think it is an even better idea than expo case back on wrist watch, because you rarely see them when you are wearing it, but pocket watch you do! Speaking of Hamilton, I always thought you wear a Khaki Field from your past video, now I know it is a Kinetic! Everytime Leica watch ads show up, I wonder who made their movement, I wonder if A Lange & Sohne still provides for them, if so, that will make sense for their price point. Every watch guy had a Seiko, I too was introduced to watches from Seiko, and I worn a few of them through out my childhood until I start branching out when I finished university.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComАй бұрын
Thanks Rex! Yes a guy in the US puts old RR watches in display backs and the main reason I wanted the watch was to see the inside. There are originals, called Salesman watch. Came with clear back to show customers... but yes mine is a mod. My watch, hmm owe I think it was a Seiko 5 in the past, not the Kinetic as it doesn't really work. To be clear the movement was designed by a team including an ex-A.Lange & Sohne employee* Yes Seiko get blamed a lot I think haha ;)

What a lot of people realize that Germany has a long horological history in the development of clockworks and watches. The center of German watch and clocks was in Glashutte. Look at some of the top watches from Germany…..Glashutte Original, A. Lange & Sohne (sorry about the umlauts), Sinn, Nomos, etc. They were also famous for their WWII pilot watches….Laco, Lange (ALS), Wempe, Stowa, and IWC. It’s great to see Leica making watches. They are making more and more of the movements. Worth a look if you have a Leica store in your area.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComАй бұрын
Thanks Gary, yes Glashutte was/is the centre of watch excellent in Germany as I see. Funny that all the skills are located in a small area. Yes many date back from the WWII pilot watches as you mention. (Stowa make nice movements.. they are on my radar too).

Beautiful watch, Matt! I collect old electric wrist watches. They use a button battery. The balance wheel is driven by a permanent magnet and an electro magnet that occilates moving the balance wheel driving the watch. The first button type batterys were designed to power these watches. Some were moderately priced. Even Seiko produced them. These went away surplanted by the quarts watches. Enjoy your new watch!

Leica watch is fashion brand. Exactly like "Diesel" or "Michael Kors". In my opinion Leica could maybe invest more of its resources in quality control and design of cameras, to avoid M11 type of issues in the future.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComАй бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts. Yes I did write to Leica to discuss the customer services (per the recent video).
@ianforberАй бұрын
I think the difference is that Leica watches have good movements inside, unlike the ones you mention which are crap and not worth the money. Some fashion brands produce excellent watches most notably Cartier (a pioneer in watches and the second biggest watch brand after Rolex), Chanel (new to the game but good movement even if the exterior is a bit 'ick'!), Hermes (the LVMH group business model involves them quietly investing in watches over the past few years), Bulgari (makes the worlds slimmest watch) and Montblanc (their 1858 movement is well respected). Fair point about Leica quality control though!

Your Nomos Club Campus is qualitatively more beautiful than any Leica watch. The Nomos is made without compromise and tells time. Everything else is a distraction. Conversely, the ethos of a Leica camera is that it captures light, and everything else is a distraction. Your aesthetic was clearly expressed by choosing the Club Campus, the saturated red dial, and the soft grey Alcantara bracelet. Stunning combination. Leica cameras are ergonomic and design masterpieces. No camera manufacturer can touch Leica's purity. Despite the Leica name, however, their watches don't touch the acumen in Leica's cameras. The Nomos Club Campus does. I'm not surprised that the Lecia salesman was wearing a Nomos. In the side-by-side comparisons of the Nomos to these other watches, the Nomos looked clean and clear while the other watches were fussy. The Nomos Club Campus is more of a Leica than the Leica watch. The Nomos is a minimalist masterpiece. Congrats. You have a great eye.

Mondaine makes very cool watches that match perfectly the Leica minimalist design with a touch of red. They are Swiss made and they copy the design of the official clocks of the swiss train stations . And one model, the Stop2go, has a very unique, cool and useless function. The seconds hand stops 2 seconds at 12, just like the real station clock which use these 2 seconds to synchronize themselves together everywhere in the country. Thanks for sharing Thomas, sorry to hear that your watch was not built to high specs.

My favourite watch at the moment is one I built myself! Seiko sell their NH3X movements to retail (seagull and ETA have stopped doing so), and lots of people are selling cases, hands and dials to fit them. I bought a few bits from EBay and AliX and put together an NH34 "Pepsi GMT". There's even a company called DIY Watch Club that are selling kits. This all led me down a path to trying my hand at watch repair and I've built up a collection of older bits to service and fix, which includes a coupe of vintage Landeron 148 chronographs from the 50s that are really lovely things. Also have a Seiko Pogue to sort once I've stopped losing parts quite so often.

Very cool! You are more skilled than me. I have seen lots of modded Seiko on eBay so it's great to meet someone that makes these. (Did you see the Peter McK video where some guy makes him a modded watch, check it out).

Congratulations on the lovely NOMOS. Leica watches are not a good value, in my opinion. Their cameras are spectacular, but they have neither the brand equity nor the reputation in the horological world required to justify those prices. SINN watches, however, an outstanding value.

Thank you! Yes I hear good things for SINN but I've very visual so the Nomos ticked my Leica red dot box.

It looks very complicated for a Leica watch!
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComАй бұрын
Haha yes they are less Bauhaus than the Nomos watches for sure!

I Dont think leica make them there just using there brand name as far as I know
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComАй бұрын
Correct, German made but not by Leica. Lehmann Präzision make them.

Thanks, I only wanted to cover Leica watches to inform people. I wasn’t going to buy one at such high prices. Americans made watches before the Swiss in the early 1900s so the American RR watch is my favourite.
