Another interesting note is that when a hive swarms, it's usually the original queen that leaves while a new queen takes her place. From a risk-management perspective, makes perfect sense, since the older queen with less lifespan takes the greater risk. The same happens with worker bees - it's the older bees that take the risks going out to collect pollen and nectar while younger bees do work in and around the hive.
@jmacd8817
@jmacd8817 11 ай бұрын
The risk now is that the new queen, which hasn't mated yet, could be killed/lost on her mating flight.or, she could end up mating with some dreck drones and end up with bad genetics.

People don’t understand the ongoing, many year, crushing agony of fires or floods. You are not the same person afterward. Plenty of people never recover. Most people don’t have (additional federal) flood insurance. Thank you for showing empathy. And showing the part of a natural disaster not often shown.

Isn’t it heart breaking? My country (Cyprus) are in the grip of wildfires, at the moment. Just a couple of weeks ago, one of our dog shelters got burnt down, several people got hurt by the panicked dogs they were trying to save, the whole shelter was a complete loss and five dogs succumbed to the smoke and fire. The country is rallying around them, fund-raising and helping them find a new place to start rebuilding and taking the dogs in who have lost their safe-place, basically helping them back onto their feet. Unfortunately, August is predicted to be hotter than July, so we will all have to be very careful and prepared for more risk from the heat!

Yes, living in a hurricane region, unfortunately, seeing sites such as this video is very common. I've lived through 2 total devastating hurricanes, and you still don't get used to such sites, as you showed in this video. I believe seeing the devastating results in person after a natural disaster is an eye-opening experience. The pictures and videos on the news just don't capture the true essence of the damage. I hope and pray your community comes back and thrives after such a disaster. The area that I live in is still recovering from a a major hurricane some 10 - 15 years ago. Plus, the ones that have visited since the major one. Stay strong and support your local communities as much as you can.

I cried seeing the flood damage. Our city also experienced extreme flooding in 2021. The entire city was evacuated for 3 weeks, then they started letting people come back. Those that weren't affected got to come home right away. They city has mostly recovered now, but there are sections that are still awful. Our house is in one of those sections, and is not habitable. We are struggling to fix it so we can get out of the hotels and actually move back home. My heart goes out to those who have gone through this. In 2008 Cedar Rapids and Iowa City were hit really hard by flooding. I worked at the hospital that flooded, we had to evacuate all of our patients. Ambulance drivers from 5 states showed up to help evacuate everyone. Later we were badly effected by a another weather event in 2020 that left parts of Iowa without power for a month. What helped rebuild was the community as well as the support of people from all over the country. The kindness, the fund raisers, the meals, the volunteers to help with sandbaging and clean up. They go a Really long way in giving business the strength to carry on or start over.

Watching the aftermath of a natural disaster is triggering for me sometimes. I lived thru Hurricane Michael in 2018 and lost EVERYTHING we could touch. We became the forgotten coast after two days airing on the news. I know the feeling of being "forgotten" during the rebuilding process. Then this year, a small town I lived in called Covington in Tennessee got devastated by a tornado. Had friends lose everything they could touch as well. It's so many years later and I live in a city that used to be shaded by pine trees. Now when I leave town, it seems alien to see so many trees 😂 like I've grown accustomed to living in a broken, always under construction city. I'm glad you were able to help out your little town with your Livestream! I hope everyone will be able to recover and rebuild ❤

There are some Go Fund Me's for specific stores, Bear Pond Books is one that I know of, FEMA has not been very helpful for them, and most of the stores could not afford the $7,000-9,000 a year for flood insurance. FEMA has told them their option is to file small business low-interest loans. When you have mold growing daily, that's kind of a pointless venture. It's heartbreaking. I've lived here my whole life, and it will not be the same.

In 2008 the town i lived in (Cedar Rapids Iowa) experience a 500 yr flood. The company i worked for was right along the river and every building had flood water in it. My lab had almost 5 ft of water in it and we were down for 10 wks. I lived 2.5 miles from there and was just 5 blocks from the flood water (only time i was grateful my hubby bought a house on a hill 😅). I "gawked" a lot. It was amazing to see the water all the way to the bottom of our elevated highway. Its amazing to see the recovery. I was grateful for living in the midwest because we didnt have looting, we had people rolling their sleeves up and getting to work. Montpelier will flourish once again, with time.

When they start to cluster that way they are looking for a safe place. In future I would always keep one or two hives empty to catch swarms like this. Scoop one batch of bees and move them down to the hive entrance. They will see a perfect little place for them and alert the others. Keep gently scooping and placing them near the hive entrance and look for the queen as you go. Clip her, place her in hive and nature will lead them to her. Sad to see the amount of flooding, love from Ohio. They keep coming back to your farm because they like you! Your a great farmer!

I work in downtown Montpelier at Lost Nation Theater Company located on the second floor of our lovely little city hall. City hall had 5 feet of water in the basement, and the first floor was ruined due to a burst pipe. Our biggest show of the season was forced to move to the Barre Opera House with our company only having one day to rehearse in the space. Originally we were supposed to have 12 shows over three weekends, but only were able to have two performances. It definitely hit us hard, and a large amount of props and scenery that were being stored in the Walgreens next door were completely ruined. Not to mention the owners of the theater companies house was flooded and many precious heirlooms ruined. If you ever want to see a live performance, we hope to have the space open again for our show beginning of October, but not 100% sure it will happen as the elevator will take several months to fix and replace. But as our liscnse plates all across the state say, we are all "Vermont Strong."

Morgan, just a suggestion: the next time a swarm of honey bees covers one of your fence posts, before leaving to buy the supplies, place a box with an entry hole next to it so the hole touches the swarm of bees. You can use a cardboard box, a wooden box or a plastic box, it doesn't matter. It just has to be a box that is not too small and not too big, it should be dark inside. And of course it needs to be protected from direct sunlight which would heat it up. In most cases, the bees enter the box on their own. It will look like a vacuum is sucking them into the box! You don't have to brush them from the post. I catch swarms every year. It is easy to shake them from low branches of trees, but it is a pain to get them out of a fence manually. In those situations, I have had great success with letting the bees move themselves into the box. Position the box so that it is in contact with the swarm. So that the bees can walk into the entrance without having to fly. No honey, no sugar, no combs. Just a dark, empty space. Please, give it a try. And you might consider to set up some bait hives.

Many years ago, my mother came home from work, walked into the house and a swarm of thousands of bees. Obviously she ran right back out the door. What a beautiful town...it is heartbreaking. This is the kind of place I dream of living in. I hate the way all the big box stores, franchises have taken over all the businesses once so important to the communities of this country. I'd love to move back to the country life I grew up in in NE Arkansas...but it is ruined now. The forests destroyed by developers as is my once beloved Spring River area. My family's home town that was quaint and an old railroad town is now a ghetto. Utterly heartbreaking what the newer generations have done to world. I know it started long ago and has simply taken over, but I miss life the way it was up until the 1980's. I love to watch Jeff Horchoff Bees' channel! He is such a great guy and he makes all kinds of bee videos including wrangling bees...from homes, buildings, and like you have here, swarms! Thank you for taking responsibility for the bees in your area! I love this video! VT is a state I have longed to visit all my life. To drive up the east coast through the Appalachians and up to the tip of out country. Then tour all the US national parks. Well at least the forested ones. Not interested in flat lands or deserts. God bless you!

Well you’ll capture the swarm next time. It’s very interesting to see how it’s done. So sorry there was flooding in your state.

Montpelier is a very pretty place. Don't worry about dropping puns, Morgan. I once had a pastor who was a totally unrepentant punster, so I'm immune. :)

In the close up shot of the swarm you can see a bee doing the wiggle dance, perhaps the bees had found a new site at that point.

Aw man. Not your year it seems, between the ducklings and the bees. Hipe it turns around good for you in the second half of the summer! Thanks for showing us how the town is slowly bouncing back, (even though it may not look it from the inside)
