About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. We dream that someday we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

Ok now actually SEEING it, I got questions... 1. How much rain in what span of time? 2. Wind? 3. Was it bad enough to secure the dogs and cats in the barn at any time or were they able to come and go? 4. Damage to any structures- I'm thinking of the hoop coop mainly. 5. Demudding grooming appointment?
@GoldShawFarm
@GoldShawFarm Жыл бұрын
1. About 8 inches in 36 hours. 2. The dogs spent most of the time in the hoop coop, the cats were in the barns. They all had free choice to come and go as they pleased. 3. No damage. 4. They cleaned right up once they dried off and I gave them brushing.

we are dealing with flooding right now in Nova Scotia, and didn’t see it coming. Yesterday was “chance if thundershowers” that turned into 18 hours straight of constant thunder and lightning (like multiple strikes per second for HOURS) and roughly 12 INCHES of rain. Roads are washed it everywhere and people had to be rescued from trees by helicopter nearby. My husband is stuck in Halifax an hour away because the major highway is underwater in many places and all the side roads have washouts. We are lucky to still have power, somehow.

Consider digging a side parallel channel to the stream. That way you let the overflowing water to flow out a predetermined path rather than flooding the whole area. Keep in mind it won't completely stop the chance of flooding. Also doing it will need planning and lot of work. I personally prefer to let the land flood that way you help increase the water table level. Also that acts as a natural method to stop weeds.

The sad thing is that these kinds of extreme weather events will just become more and more frequent as the global temp will rise and based on current situation we will simply fly past the 1.5c which was supposed to be the hard limit but which we wont reach since no government has done enough to make us stay below that. We will, certainly, have to learn to live with more and more extreme weather and with all that will entail.

We had some epic, animal drowning type floods in an area of the state a couple (well probably number, some things seem like just yesterday) of years ago. One thing that proved livelyhood saving-ish for at least some were the animal evacuation efforts and then a place to put them. People even came from out of the immediate flood zone with trailers, cages, and cardboard boxes to rescue what they could. Those that could be emptied meant that another load could be collected. Someone in a near by town even had a dairy cow tied in thier subdivision front yard; that one hit the news plus a call for someone who could milk a cow. Do consider if and how your property could sustain a spare animal or two without putting your trees, animals, and garden in harm's way. This storm may be a hundred year storm or the harbinger of the hundred years to come.

@8:30 Maybe Abby doesn't need to be inside the fence? Maybe your guard dog defense has layers instead of zones. Abby is the outer layer, Toby is the inner layer. This would have the benefit of expanding the area where your dogs exert pressure on predators to keep them away and push them back further. You can use the camera on her a few more times to see what she does and be sure she's not going to go too far afield.

Morgan, you still don't know the Different between the Male and the Female by this Kind of Dogs! They are totally different and any serious Breeder can explain it to you. I had have a Mastin de Pirineo, a Female and Abby reminds me to my beloved late Hilde. Males are watching and controlling a Time but than They lay down and are attending very calm and quired between the Herd. The Female isn't that calm and quired, never ever! Their Natural is to walk and run the whole Time, special by Night around and between. Again, it's genetic and you never ever will this get out of Abby. Including her Escaping Abillitys. It's inside the Females and cutting to Abby the Possibility to run around the whole Farm, yes... aswell and in special,the Barn and your House, because there she was all the Time from the early Beginning, she will feel fined. She is taking the Resbonsibility for HER ZONE. A Different would be, if you had put her between your Cows from the very Beginning. Then she grew up with the Herd as her Family. But She grewed up with you and Toby Dog. You will break her Heart and this I say seriously! And she is still a Teenager. Abby will be adult with two and a half Year. If you don't learn to know this Kind of Breed very well, you are cutting a lot of Abbility and Freedom to your poor Abby. She feel aswell responsibly for you, like a Mother for her Herd of Children. Don't seperate her to far from you. This Breed doesn't obey like a German Sheppard. This Breed will do Everything independently and out of love. Please recognice it as Something very Valuable. Regards and Hugs from Spain, Canary Islands, your Andrea ❤

I hope it all keeps managing to keep it away from the house and to protect the animals. And Abby is an agile, resourceful athlete!
