EPIC III | Hadestown Animatic

Okay. Finally.
This took a little over two years of (very) intermittent work. Thank you to everybody who stuck around for all that time. You're the best, truly.
I started in late June, 2019. I am finishing in late July, 2021. This began before the full release of the Hadestown Broadway OBC; what you are hearing is a London performance bootleg.
This is the longest I have ever worked on something. I've taken months-long breaks from this project just from overall difficulties and problems with my ADD and executive dysfunction, but I always came back to this. I wanted to finish it. This is my fifth attempt at a true and proper "animatic" and my only finished one; all my other attempts fell apart from running out of motivation, and as someone who has always had problems committing to longer projects, I am happy to have the proof that I can do it. I always felt bad about how long this was taking me, and thought that if I just sat down to work, this would have been done a long time ago. I don't regret the pace anymore though. This is my "big bang" before I enter college. Now that I've done this, I'm ready to do better.
Moral of the story is not “oh, just start, just get on it.” The moral of the story is take your damn meds.
Thank you to all my friends who gave me suggestions when I asked for help or got stuck, and encouraged me when things got sad and slow, and put up with me writing my entire outlines and revisions in Discord chats or cussing out AfterEffects and Adobe. I love you so much. Even when you were reading bad fanfic, saying "piss," yelling, playing Rick Astley, and Phone Guy audio clips in the voice call while I was streaming.
Notes: Persephone does not have a brutalist throne next to Hades’; not because it was denied to her, but because she refuses to rule as he does and refuses to lord over the workers who slave under his iron hand. This wretched palace, she sees as his and his alone.
Double fun fact: if you think that the workers featured look like the OBC chorus & two of the swings, you'd be correct!
Triple fun fact: I've had a rising platform (and the godly size difference) in mind ever since I first listened to this in like, 2018! But back then it was just a mechanical platform, not a pillar of light, and it was all way less dramatic because the original track in the NYTW Live album was also way less dramatic. But I just wanna put it out there that I was ahead of the curve with the platform. I'm a psychic. /j Golden light was also a constant as seen in my Epic III cathedral edit that I made before I even properly listened to the whole show, but it never became so Much until Broadway.
Also, this was worked on out of order. The middle and most dramatic section was completed first, using a .jpeg slideshow technique in iMovie. After that I got pissed with the editing capabilities and got AfterEffects; then I completed the beginning, and then I completed the end, and pieced it all together. So if the art and editing looks janky in places, that's why.
ALSO, all you people do yourselves a favor and look at the other Hadestown albums!! Hadestown has three albums from over the years and they're all gorgeous, they're all on Spotify and iTunes and KZbin go check them out I'm begging you I keep getting comments on my NYTW Epic III video asking what song it is and if it's on Spotify girl help.

God I love how you create a swell at 2:47 leading into Orpheus' high and amazing vocals with your golden colors. Then when the chorus comes in you make the swell last perfectly with your animation of Hades walking until it hits the boom of the music with them locking in with each other and beginning to rise. Rewatching this, along with the notes, it’s really amazing to see your thoughts behind everything, things you wanted to do, etc. I like how you took inspiration from shows and movies for certain scenes, and I think it helped with inspiration. The whole thing with switching sides and perspectives was really cool and effective. And of course, the art. Holy cake. Every single frame is gorgeous. I can think of at least 4 parts that would be perfect for wallpapers, and even for some of the simpler parts, the character and background designs are still stellar. Probably my favorite animatic on KZbin. OH! And the parallels between your cathedral edits and this. Makes it so much nicer.

Jesus. I just recently saw Hadestown in my hometown and I've become obsessed with it. I've must have watched this video 30 times already and I keep finding little details that add so much emotion and inspiration. Of all the Hadestown animatics on KZbin, I have to say this one is my favorite because the sheer amount of quality and creative thought put into it (especially the climax with Hades and Orpheus facing each other). The expressions are spot on and how the song becomes physical is beautiful. And the parallels between Hades and Orpheus are so painful, especially when you think about how the legend ends. Everything was timed beautifully, and drawn beautifully too. You chose one of the most (of what I believe) complex and emotional scenes in the show to do and you did not disappoint. Well done.

This is beyond phenomenal and you should be super proud! I think my favorite touch is that bit where Orpheus reaches out to Eurydice the same way Hades reaches to Persephone. My favorite versions of Epic III make it feel like it’s something of character arc for Orpheus, like NYT. It starts off with him viewing Hades as a powerful king (here he practically makes him a god), but as the story continues he starts to see the humanity in Hades, seeing more of himself in the man until the line “What he doesn’t know is what he’s defending, is already gone.” Afterwords he never refers to him as a king again, only as a man, because here he recognizes that the two of them, to one extent or another, share the same issue; the fear of losing the woman you love. I think this is the first time I’ve seen anyone acknowledge that and to see it here blew my mind!

ayo I’ve been trying to find what I want to say about this wonderful magnificent brilliant piece for the better part of today. the art and colours and animation are beautiful, I felt every shift of expression, I felt the ground tremble as the orpheus lifted them into the golden sky.
