Haha, 'have I ever wondered what it's like to walk up and down every single aisle in a Japanese supermarket for 1 hour?' Well yes, yes I have. However, I'm a woman of action not just one partial to tapping out enthusiastically long, strange comments on KZbin videos and so I HAVE spent a few hours inspecting supermarket shelves in Japan in person. In fact, I do it with great excitement in every country I visit and I never get bored of adding 'supermarket visit' to every travel itinerary I plan. Love it, so glad I'm not the only one who is genuinely thrilled by the mundane, everyday world around when examined through the warped lens that is a foreign culture-- hey it's the exact same yet totally different! Oh my! I remember getting lost inside a Japanese supermarket. I usually go for the onigiris, iced coffees, pre-sliced salads with dressings, and the weird Kit-Kat flavors. I missed the Vit.C water that I guzzled a lot during my stay in Japan because I got a really bad case of runny nose in the first couple of weeks. Among other things, I miss the dried veggie chips. They're so good! Thanks for the tour, Cory. More than anything, I wish I could visit Japan again. Cheers!

I'm just in love with the funny music they play 😂 it's so cute! I hope all of the grocery stores in Japan play music like that. The sound is so much more fun than the boring pop and American 80s classics that play in the stores here in the States.
@CoryMay812 жыл бұрын
It's funny because many supermarkets have their own kind of jingles on loop. I read something about the psychology of why they are so loud and annoying, but can't remember the specifics about it. Something like the repetitive and annoying sound makes people shop faster and buy more. Then there are some other stores that just straight up play radio pop music. I was just in a store that was playing the Neverending Story theme song, so random! And then followed by Dancing Queen by ABBA. Needless to say, it's already my favorite supermarket. hahaha Stay tuned for more videos! Thanks for watching and commenting!

LOL, the candy Aisle IS actually what I was waiting for! I saw it in the thumbnail, and thought maybe I recognized a bag of a reloatively-modern/recent product addition we have here in the US.... The bag on the shelf in the picture is, of course, something else, but it got me curious and had me skip to the candy section 😆Good vibes in this video though, thank you for taking us on a tour!

@@CoryMay81 Yo Cory! thanks for the reply! Yes, you are exactly right, they are stylized after Swedish Fish, and even contain the Carnauba Wax, but are a more recent product produced by a startup company and formulated as a healthier reconstruction of a popular candy, not even containing any standard sugar, or any artificial sweeteners or sugar-alcohols. They skip gelatin also on several of their gummy-products, and most items from the company are heavy on using pectins and various plant-based soluable (soluble?) fibers. Pretty interesting... their peach rings have awesome flavor. Take care and enjoy this springtime 💚💗

Thanks for the tour of Japan! Very far away from most of us in the world but amazing for its millennia of history and highly developed arts and culture. Thanks, Stephen, for watching and leaving a comment. Yeah, it's pretty tiring going up and down every aisle. But I enjoy showing people what exists here as much as possible. I know other channels tend to give short little highlights and briefly mention some stuff in like a 5-minute video, and to me, while it's interesting, it doesn't give people any sense of what it's actually like to be in a supermarket or other place. Hey Cory, some ideas for your channel. I think what your channel has always boiled down to is the adventure/casual walking aspect. To evolve that further, create a show format where you start from some spot, have a short to medium walk, and then transition to an exploration of the place like this video, and then transition to another short walking part back to the station or point of origin. Things like book stores, post offices, really any day-in-the-life spot you might think of. You'll get the walking part of your normal streams where you can point out the sights, but you also get a chance to highlight specific japanese businesses or cultural elements that can only be talked about or explained by entering some of the places you walk by. Going off of that, picking up a hobby that works with recording might do well. It could be model kits, banzai trees, camping. Whatever is something that interests you, is affordable, and lends well with recording. How you go about the hobby, and what materials are available that are unique to Japan would give it an angle that other channels might not be able to provide. And you can wrap that into the walk-to-places video by going to the hobby store and exploring, asking for tips on what to work on next etc. Good luck! I hope to see your channel grow to your old view counts again. Being an English speaker in a foreign country is still a pretty rare thing so you have that going for you to stand out.

Love all the explanations in detail and the slow tour is great! Doing virtual shopping with you is fun! Now I know what everything is when shopping in the states in a Japanese market. Thanks for a great video and the closed captioning!

Hi, it's great. I like to know the prizes everywhere - in restaurants too! - and prices of hotels and apartments and that of all living accomodations too. - prices of public traffic and taxi / cab, etc... :))

Loved the tour, i wished that you spend a bit more time at the mushrooms, but its so sad to see all those vegetables wraped in plastic. We, here in Hungary eat a lot of pickled vegetables with our main meals, I love them so much, I even eat it as a snack sometimes.

there’s a lot of things i don’t even know but i want to buy em 😂

hahaha Yeah, if you can't read Japanese, it's a bit difficult to know what is what. Sometimes just buying stuff and trying it is a great way to have fun, though. It's a surprise every time.

Wow, those prices are expensive for some things, especially the fruit and veg. I am from Ireland and the main pickled thing we eat is pickled onions and gherkins-type things with salad.
@CoryMay813 жыл бұрын
Yeah, some things can be expensive, some not. I guess it depends on what you buy. Ooooh pickled onions are so good. Thanks for watching!

From Ireland too. We also love pickedled beetroot. I love pickled stuff! I only ever really eat it with meals in the summer with a cold salad dinner. I do however eat gerkins as a low cal snack.

Great video, I love the slow, calmness of this video.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pace of it. I've seen other people do supermarket "tours" but they're all just rushed highlights of things, not an actual tour. Thanks for watching!

@@CoryMay81 Exactly, what's the point of a Supermarket tour, if your not going to actually show the Supermarket, and what others show is a blur. Not fun to watch. Keep up the great work.

Great video! Loved see all the items in a Japanese supermarkert since I live in the US. When you were talking about the noodles and said keep them separated I did the same thing and sang it in my head lol, guess the offspring seeps into your subconscious and pops out when needed. Thanks for the video.

And everything is in plastic. So so sad. Please be careful and don't buy so much plastic! It is not good for our earth!
@CoryMay814 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's really bad. I always carry a reusable eco-bag or my backpack for my shopping. Japan did start charging for plastic bags as of this summer, but it still doesn't reduce anything, especially how each item is individually wrapped. Such a crazy thing in such a modern/developed country like Japan. Thanks for watching!
@nevaeh091814 жыл бұрын
Plastics are recyclable in Japan even the individual food packaging. Their recycling system is better than some countries.

Okay, so I am a supermarket nut. I love coming into a new supermarket in a different country and just browse everything, not even buying anything, just enjoying the variety. Literally, everyone does this, in any country. It's how you check for freshness, firmness/ripeness, etc. Before the pandemic and during the pandemic.

@@CoryMay81 just because everyone does something doesn't make it appropriate. touching fruits especially bruises them and makes them spoil. Take advice from an old lady ;)
