In "Fanny Pack Man Bun", Taryl goes over the steps to properly rebuilding this vintage Lawn Boy D-601 Engine. Lawn Boys are a little different than most typical mowers you see on the market today, so be sure to reference this video when regarding what to look for. Before and after the fix, Taryl is visited by a local customer who carries his cash in some odd places and won't take "new" for an answer. Another funny, yet informative, how-to video from your pals at Grass Rats Garage! And as Taryl's been saying for years now.... Theres Your Dinner!!

Ahh, what a memory... The smells and sounds of summers past. Freshly cut grass mixed with 2-stroke fumes... The comforting hum of a lime green 2-stroke Lawn Boy. Thanks Taryl for bringing this little beast back to life! When I was a kid we had a Western Auto mower with a Clinton 2-stroke, aluminum deck. We named that mower "Old Charlie". There are black/white snapshots of me riding on my dad's shoulders as he mowed the yard with Old Charlie. That was over 50 years ago... wish I could have both of them back.

I would have loved to benefit from all your great advices and demos at this time. We learn a lot with you and you share your knowledge with great pedagogy and professionalism. I got a lawnboy "D" the "brick" motor of 60's vintage. Runs good. I also got it for free and got it running. I probably should put some rings in it but it will run and start so for now I am leaving it. The problem is I don't use it enough. I really have no use for a push mower. I did some work on it just as a challenge. I wish I knew someone who would use it. I picked it up from a trash pile because I used one of these as a child back in the 50's and early 60's. Also, my grandfather owned a hardware store (from the 30's until 1972) and he sold lawnboys. the center isle of the store always had a half dozen lawnboys lined up single file in the Spring. His store one of those old hardware stores that offered much more than what is now considered "hardware." One corner of the store was dedicated to guns, ammo, knives and assorted goods a sportsman would need. The hardwood floor creaked as you walked upon it and the air inside was a compilation of traditional old hardware smells and the ever present cigar he enjoyed throughout the day. Nails were stored in a huge metal binned unit that contained all sorts of nails in bulk that one bought by the pound scooped into heavy duty paper bags with a hand held "claw." I have so many memories of him and the store. This got a bit off topic but this and so much more is what made me pick up an old lawnboy out of the trash and try to get it running. It was a way of connecting to a good part of my past. Thanks for listening.

My dad had one I used in the sixties ( I think it was made in the fifties?). The deck was die cast and had the offset wheels. and I remember the spark plug would glow. Strange? When the recoil broke you could take the recoil off and there was a pulley underneath which you could wind a starter rope around to start it. So you always hoped it would start right away. Lol

I have an all original 1980 Lawn Boy Scamp. It's in very good condition. Took the carb off and completely disassembled it and cleaned everything. New plug and fresh 2 cycle gas and it started right up, and it ran perfectly. Really have no use for it. It's been in the family sense around 1995. My parents neighbor couldn't get it running and gave to my dad. It didn't take me long to get it running. My parents used it a few times, but they were getting old, so a push mower wasn't best for them. After they passed, I ended up with the Law Boy. I used it a few times to trim around the house. Worked great, but I had newer lawn mowers that I used instead. I have no idea what the Scamp is worth? The only thing that is missing, is the plastic grass deflector. It was on the machine when the neighbor gave it to my dad, I am not sure where it ended up? The blade has little to no wear. I think I replaced it shortly after my dad ended up with it. My question is, what do you think the Scamp is worth? Is 100 dollars to much? I really have no idea what to ask for it.

Haven't seen a Lawnboy in ages. They were great mowers. Never need to change the oil. Runs at high rpm which is great for cutting. Because it's 2 stroke it was way lighter. It threw the clippings farther as well. I never saw one with a bag but I bet they had one. There's a plate on the deck for one. Due to its 2 stroke less parts and things could break on it. The offset wheels also lended to easy tight areas/corners and made it easy to turn. The 2 stroke ban killed them. To bad but Taryl's Got You. Great work My Dude. Great to see the old girl working again.

@@kevinjohnson5214 EPA didn't ban 2 stroke mowers. Manufacturers didn't want to invest in clean 2 stroke engine development. So they discontinued them altogether. Their last models met EPA regs. I guess it was easier(cheaper) to make a 4 stroke do what a 2 stroke could than to make a 2 stroke as clean as a 4 stroke. It was a purely financial decision. We may not like EPA sometimes, but I shudder to think what the air and water would be like today if we left it to engine manufacturers and chemical companies to self regulate with no regulations. I remember rainbow colored rivers and choking at stop lights when I was a kid. The clean air and water acts are two things President Nixon's grandchildren can be proud of.

Great video Taryl. We used a Lawn Boy Utility mower to mow our extremely steep hill going down to the lake. We would take the handle off and attach a long robe and let the mower down the hill and pull it up with the rope. People used to watch us in their boats as we cut the hill. There was one hundred steps going down to the lake. When our parents passed away, we sold the cabin. Man, it was a lot of work to that property to keep it up. Most of Loon Lake in Hale MI has step hills going down to the lake. A lot of memories with family at the cabin. I doubt if the person who owns the cabin now, cuts the hill like we used to. What a workout that was! That part of the cabin I don't miss. At this time, I have a Lawn Boy Scamp Utility mower in great original condition for sale. My neighbor gave it to me more than twenty years ago. It needed a new recoil starter and air filter cover, and that was all that was wrong with it. Just blew the dust off from it the other day and cleaned the carb and it started right up and ran perfectly. Sense I have had it, it has spent most of its time in storage. I even have the Lawn Boy engine that was on the mower we used up at the cabin. It starts and runs, but I am sure it could use a rebuild. Many hours on it cutting the property up north. Many hard hours! Lawn Boys with 2 cycle engines are great, simple machines. Love your videos, Taryl. Learn a lot and entertained all at the same time. Can't go wrong with that! Grass Rats Rock!!

I had a Lawnboy from HD that I bought new in 1989. It was self propelled with a 3 speed transmission. I changed the air filter, plug, and blade every year. after about 20 years of use the cable that ran from the bail to the cutoff switch on the motor broke and a new one was no longer available. I wired a toggle switch to the top of the handle, so I no longer had the safety feature (which I was happy about). Anyway, I used that mower up until 2018 when the electronic ignition model finally crapped out. I couldn't find a replacement. I never changed any other parts. It even had the original drive belt. I got 29 years of use out of it and the motor was running strong when the ignition gave out. I bought a 20 year old electric start Toro that still runs like new. I'm retired to the country now and have over an acre to mow. I bought a new Cub Cadet LT42 with the 5400 Kohler (Crowler) 18 horse single. I know this is the Courage motor revisited, but there are a lot of improvements. And I will check the torque specs on the top engine case bolts annually. After 1 1/2 seasons and 42 operation hours it still starts and runs flawlessly. It has a Taryl sticker on the center of the steering wheel, so I know it will last. Lol I'd really like to know Taryl's opinion of the new 5400 series. I knew I didn't want that made in China "MTD" motor.

I remember seeing these all the time when I was a kid. They always seemed to cut good. But I preferred the Suzuki powered Toros that required every ounce of strength to pull over. Almost no plastic and still very light and powerful. For sure the best mulching and bagging mower I've ever owned. I even know a few commercial outfits still running 70s and 80s Toros despite them being near 40 years old.

You're a master at your craft. You got that old Lawn Boy running good, and it mowed grass great. It seemed to run better the more you used it. I need one of those tube squeezers, I might have to order one from your store.

Inherited a 77 lawnboy very similar to that one from an uncle, still runs perfect to this day. And I expect it to run for another 40 years as well. I love how lightweight it is and it can take a beating. Great little machines

The best thing you Dan do for them is make sure to run them on 32:1 mix, that’s what they all called (except the M series with oil injection) and 50:1, even with modern synthetic 2 cycle oil just isn’t enough lubrication. I’ve seen a few D and F engines and a ton of Duraforces with low compression thanks to guys running their 50:1 chainsaw gas in them. I’m sure someone will chime in and say I’m wrong and 50:1 works fine on theirs but I always say better to air on the side of caution, especially when you’re only talking about adding a few ounces more oil.

@@J.R.in_WV Thanks for the advice. I do run 50:1 but I use Lawn-boy brand oil. The machine says to run 50:1 but I may keep it a little richer

@@MrTheBigNoze Are you SURE about that mix? I have a 1980 r7070 (F engine), and it specifies 32:1. I started running Echo Red Armor oil, and I actually mix it at 25:1 since it works out better to just use a 2 gallon size bottle to 1 gallon of gas. I ran a little less than 1 tank through it last year, and it already runs smoother on the Red Armor.

We had on of these lawn boys back in like 1963 and it was super. It got where it wouldn't start so we had a squirt can with 2 cycle gas we would squirt in the air intake an it would start first pull and run like a champ. We used that mower for 10 or 12 years priming it to start and it worked great. I think probably the crank was either loose or the main seals were bad thus making it not having enough suction to pull fuel to the ports but no matter it was easy to prime. Great video.😊😊😊😊😊

Every year we had to listen to our coworker grip about how much money it cost for the shop to ready his mower and then again during the season, usually, another big expense. After about 6 years, they told him it was done for. and he needed a new mower. We were stunned when he bought another Lawn Boy. Enjoyed your rebuild; was lots of fun.

I had one and the light weight was why I purchased it. Someone borrowed straight dino juice from the neighbor once and it seized. When I came home I took out the spark plug and squirted some dino syrup into the cylinder, the carb, and the gas tank. I rocked the blade back and forth a few times until it freed up and then it started right up. I got about another 3 or 4 years out of it.

Great video. I have collected a few Lawnboys, because I became fond of them, because it was my first lawnmower. Back in the late 50s, my mom bought one that had the Iron Horse engine and a pull string. The pull string became a pain in the butt on those days when it was temperamental, but it was a good reliable mower. I am going to have to do a lot of work to get the ones I have, restored to operating condition, and this video had a wealth of tips I intend to apply to my efforts to restore them to a running condition. Thanks for all the entertainment. It is 3:00 am, I have a starter to install in my 4x4, and it's all your fault. Let this be on your shoulders,

These were simple and complicated all at the same time. No valves, cams, or many other moving parts. Especially after the governors went away with the F engines. If the crank seals, carb, and ignition coil were good, they run. Always. Run straight gas in them for a few minutes and it's all over, though. 2-stroke mower owners shouldn't loan their mowers out..........

Those older mowers used to run RICH and smoke like crazy. The exhaust under the deck let the blade blow it away from the operator so it wouldn't gag you too bad.

Reading through the comments, I see polar opposite responses: "finest mower ever made" or "what a piece of junk." I'm thinking that the people who say it's junk didn't read and follow the owner's manual. In the spring of 1988 I bought a brand new model 7073 (steel deck) and still use it to this day. If you consider the pull-rope a consumable, then there has never been any major work done to it. Carburetor has never been off or even had the bowl removed. To my shame, though, I have never cleaned the exhaust ports yet it continues to run fine. My care and feeding routine: Always use Lawn-Boy brand oil mixed 32:1 Almost always use ethanol-free gas Turn off fuel and allow bowl to run dry when done mowing I've also used Sta-Bil in the past, but after seeing Taryl's tests on fuel additives, it probably isn't doing any good (but probably isn't doing any harm, either).

I had one of these and did the exact same as you - got it all cleaned fixed the issues and got it running. Ran like a top. But the stupid starter rope and return spring kept having issues. Replaced the pinion gear but it still kept jumping the winder and I would have to re-wind it. Finally gave up on it and got me a 1978 Snapper 2 Stroke with a Wisconsin-Robin engine. Completely rebuilt it and it runs second pull EVERY time - and it has a throttle too. Nice job.

I used to cut our neighbor’s lawn with their Lawn Boy mower for them while they were away on vacation. That thing would smoke like hell, I guess they had the mixture ratio wrong or something.
