What I love so much about Cynosephalae is just how much of a turning point it was in the history of the Mediterranean world. On one side, you had the world of Alexander, the Hellenistic world, and everything that represented. The dominance of the Greeks. On the other side, you had the rising power of Rome. A new society, with a new outlook on the world, with ambitions as great as that of Alexander, and with a new updated philosophy to fighting. And these two forces met in an engagement where the possibilities were numerous. If Flamininus had not ordered his left wing to charge, if Nicanor had brought up Phillip's left flank in time to form up, if the Roman tribune had not seen the opening created by his flank's charge. One wonders whether it would be the Macedonian sun and not the Roman eagle which empires would emulate.

In the midst of battle, the Mediterranean World held it's breath. Lost in the blood soaked plains of Cynosephalae, a history was buried. And with that burial, a new history would be forged.

Guys, this is just a great work by you and Kaisa ,a real masterpiece, I watch it for the fifth time and every time I cry, I am 38 years old, so strong is the drama and power of what is happening. As a fan of military history and a fan of Total War series, I applaud, no film can so coolly convey the atmosphere of those battles as you, continue to create your masterpieces, there were many battles in ancient history. Hollywood should have learned from you how to evoke emotions in the audience. Of course, many thanks to the creative Assembly, without their creativity, we would not have been able to see IT, and you would not have been able to do IT. I will definitely review it dozens more times, it's just an indescribable emotion.) Good luck and success, with respect to you from Russia)

You fell into the Hollywood trap. Too many quick cuts, too much focus on close-up shots. It stops you getting an overall feel for what's actually going on, even more so since this is a large battle rather than a one on one fist fight. Look at any movie featuring a battle between large armies, for every set of close up shots showing characters, there'll be a zoomed out shot showing off the scale and overall situation in the battle. This also helps with cutting from place to place, if we just saw a zoomed out shot of a part of the battle, now we know what's happening when the camera goes in close to a character immersed in that. With nothing but a series of close up quick cuts, it makes it look more like a trailer montage, a series of disconnected snippets not trying to show a larger event.
@koed111
@koed111 5 жыл бұрын
Fully agree with what you say. I will also criticize the fact that something as simple as the 180 degree rule was broken several times. The rule exists for a reason, and the cavalry charge at 4:15 is a prime example of why you should follow the rule.
@PlayerOblivion
@PlayerOblivion 5 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Everything being close-up shots completely killed perception of scale. Its meant to be a ludicrously large battle with two huge armies, but we don't even see a fraction of those armies. Could be a technical limitation for sure. But yeah, more zoomed out views ala Alexander (2004 movie) would give the viewer a greater look at the sheer scale of the battle, and allow them to follow its progression.

Imagine the PTSD after the campaign season, or what veteran Triarii that came back alive every time had to carry after a lifetime of service.
@christophcooneyoff
@christophcooneyoff 3 жыл бұрын
@@CsStoker Many of the Triarii were full blown alcoholics for this reason. Plutarch wrote about soldiers experiencing night terrors, flashbacks and more when he was documenting the Marian reforms during the lingering years of the Roman Republic (after this battle). Interestingly though, he also reported that this was temporary, and that men returned to their families or to their allocated plot of land and lived out their days in relative peace. One of the ideas for why this might be the case is that this form of combat was direct and immediate. That is, you see a guy, you stab, you slash, you get cut, and when it's over, you return to your camps and you're likely okay. There is true down time. Very few night raids (and you had guards posted for that reason), no air strikes or IEDs or land mines or any of that. Some people think that what these men experienced wasn't PTSD at all, but symptoms of severe stress that passed when they were out of combat, and they think the nature of the combat is the reason for this! Thought you might find it interesting - I've been reading about the Roman Republic / Empire for some years :)

Troy is a myth no actual proof it exists. Roman empire was split when foreign barbaric tribes invaded an already Rome hurt by civil wars and economic decline.

Truly excellent! I wish it would have given a top down view of the moment the Roman legions took the hill on the right side of the battle and the "unknown Tribune" lead his cavalry force to flank the main engagement, but I really enjoyed watching it all the same. Thanks. Definitely a sub from me!
