I live in the U. S. A., so - crums! But I have something for you, instead. I found a paper on flax seals! “Lead seals of Russian origin in Fife” by John Sullivan. It even has a bunch of photographs of the seals, including one (15CUPMS, #31) whose reverse side is very close to the one which you found, today. There is a fine description of what information was placed on the seals as well, along with how to pronounce the Russian words. So, for yours, on the first line of the reverse, the letters APX are the abbreviation for the port of Archangel, and the last two letters are the Quality Control Officer’s symbol. The word on the next line, pronounced, “CHECKA”, means “heckled flax”. Not an insult - heckled means long. The third line is the grade of the flax. And the fourth gives the initials of the producer of the flax. I hope that I haven’t spoiled your fun by already looking up one side of the seal. You still have the obverse to explore! Thank you for all the fun.

The bent piece of wire with the loop I recognised straight away. Back when I was a very young girl in the early 1960s my father would use one of these in the garden to mark a line. A piece of string is tied to that and wound around a bigger one. The small one would be put in the ground and the string unwound until it was long enough then the other pushed into the ground. The string is then the marker for your line of vegetable plants etc.

Can you hear us all talking to you when you puzzle over a target? I love watching you regardless of what you find. It’s the journey and your chatter that brings me to your channel. And I need to start taking notes about the history you teach but my hands are usually busy with bread dough or dishwashing suds. Thank you from Canada for always an interesting romp through the Perthshire fields❤

The Royal Scots Fusiliers was a line infantry regiment of the British Army that existed from 1678 until 1959 when it was amalgamated with the Highland Light Infantry. Nice find 👌
@aprilwestervelt35167 ай бұрын
I can read Cyrillic. The first line is for the city of “Archangel”. The second line is something like “cheska” but I can’t find that in my dictionary. The third line is “3rd Sort” or 3rd Grade Level. Fourth line is the initials “F. R.” (Maybe the producer or manufacturer?) and the last line the is, of course, the date. :) The Russian word for flax is “лен”, so maybe it’s a seal for something else?

Fantastic John 🙌🏻 sorry to be that person but jute is from a different plant, it’s not related to flax. Also, flax seed was imported in vast amounts from Riga in 18th century, so the seal may belong to a seed bag. At one point in Scotland in the 18th century linen was worth more than money and you could exchange board-certified cloth at a bank for cash.

Royal Scots Fusiliers shoulder title badge. The title fusilier comes from the issuing of rifles (fusils) to regiments previously using muskets. The word rifle does not mean what we would think of today with modern cartridges but an improved musket with rifling in the barrel to cause the lead bullet to twist which helps with increased accuracy. First issued to the 60th Regiment of Foot in late 1700s or early 1800s.
