I'm always gonna love Epic Mickey 2 because of the memories I have with it, I prefer it over the first game and it's one of my favorite games of all time, the costumes are one thing I remember and love!

While I think that EM is better than EM2, I agree that I love the game and the improvements are way better than the downsides (at least on the Wii version)

This took me so long to realize That Oswald's tron costume was based on tron and then to add to that Petetronic is wearing a tron costume! I'm surprised I never knew about this Given that i've seen tron legacy. I guess I didn't make the connection

It was intended to be a Wii exclusive until Junk Point Studios announced the HD versions because since the first game sold 2 million copies worldwide. The HD versions are basically remastered from the Wii version which was used as the beta version which is why its graphics are somewhat inferior. The Sorcerer's Apprentice costume was decided to be included last minute. Also, Wii version did have exclusive artwork on disc as well as three save slots. You can also still free roam the game after completing and continue on the side quests. The HD version you had to start from the beginning.

in the hd versions you can still play after defeating the mad doctor
@AnimationsDownUnderАй бұрын
Like someone else said, you can continue after defeating the Mad Doctor in the HD versions. It makes sense it started as a Wii-exclusive, since the prototypes with all the test/beta levels were on a Wii. I do feel like there could be other reasons behind the Sorcerer's Apprentice costume not making it to the Wii, maybe the cloak physics wasn't possible on the Wii?

Hands down my FAV costume to use was Oswald’s ‘82 Tron outfit! 🩵 Mainly because my introduction to the Tron series was Tron: Legacy & Tron: Uprising (the animated show is canonically set between the events after ‘82 and right when CLU 2.0 took over the Grid, right before Legacy occurred, so the show REALLY got me hooked into Tron lore lol) in which they both came out right around when I started to play both of the Epic Mickey games! 😆 The Tron series doesn’t really get that much love compared to other older Disney IPs, so having the 82’ suit be part of this game, especially during the time it came out, was such a delight to see! 😆

Honestly, the costumes and spirits are the only good thing Epic Mickey 2 added to the first. Epic Mickey is supposed to be an Immersive Sim, a genre in which upgrades and more importantly choosing your upgrades is important to the game allowing for both an emphasis on player choice as well as encouraging emergent gameplay by having the varied player builds interact with the varied and interconnected level design. Despite this Epic Mickey has only 2 upgrades which are extremely generic, thinner upgrade or paint upgrade. They're upgrades sure and its nice that which you receive is dependent on player choice but otherwise they're pretty generic and don't do much to enhance the gameplay as its a pretty trivial stat upgrade. Finally, it doesn't help that its the only one so the difference between your end game Mickey in two playthroughs is simply a matter of four different max paint & thinner capacities. Consequently, I think the costume are the right idea as they introduce new and varied upgrades into the game. I'm not going to lie and say they're amazing but its definitely the right direction. Some of the upgrades aren't the best, for example if it weren't for the bug the Sorcerer's Apprentice costume is objectively the best while the Brave Little Tailor and Construction costumes aren't too good once you run out of uses for cloth and metal respectively. On top of this a major aspect of upgrades in immersive sims is their permanence, it lends weight to the decision both making it more important and impactful but also engaging as now you need to determine which upgrade you think will be the most helpful. Epic Mickey costumes slightly achieve this as they can't simply be swapped at any moment but the fact that everytime you return home allows you to change costumes slightly cheapens this, though the costumes aren't really designed in a way that making their upgrades permanent irreversible decisions wouldn't facilitate the gameplay a whole lot as well as it being awkward to introduce 'permanent costumes'. If I had to work it out I'd make costumes like a skill which can be upgraded, this way their abilities improve allowing them to not waiver between being either too good or useless as they now all start as pretty bad but if you invest over time they can become quite overpowered. In fact I like this decision as it makes the otherwise trivial fact that you can swap costumes whenever you're in Mean Street into an interesting design choice as now you have to decide between putting all of your eggs in one basket and maxing out a costume to level 5 for an ultra-powerful costume or take advantage of the fact that costumes aren't permanent and instead spread out your upgrades between multiple costumes to receive inferior level 3 costumes but the ability to change costumes when you see fit without having to go down to a crappy level 1 costume. Sprits are in a similar boat as a good concept with flawed execution. Again they're not too good, have no sense of permanence as you can get ever spirit, and more importantly they're so hard to get in my opinion. Often you need to get pins from the pin trader which in my opinion is dumb. Upgrades should be unlocked and chosen by player exploration and choice, not simply a matter of purchasing it in the shop. So even the spirits fail but are still miles better than what we got in Epic Mickey. If I had to rework these I'd probably make it so that Spirits are based off of collecting a percentage of pins from the set to unlock. The issue with how they're currently set up is that if you miss just one pin you're screwed and this is probably why they're so dependent on the pin trader to ensure players can actually get spirits. If its percentage based though you still have to explore and can miss spirits but it wouldn't be so strict that missing one niche pin would ruin your chances. Regardless, while they aren't perfect if I were in charge of remaking Epic Mickey from the ground up I'd 100% keep Spirits and Costumes, simply reworking them, as in my opinion they're the gateway to the upgrade and choice system Epic Mickey is desperately missing to become a true immersive sim.

That's a very thought out opinion! I mostly play Epic Mickey for the story and exploring the different worlds, but each of your points do make sense. The morality system is kinda flawed and doesn't really affect gameplay too much, hopefully this is an area Purple Lamp improve on in Rebrushed!

@@AnimationsDownUnder also get this, my cousin who was part of the team for epic Mickey 2, he told me thst there were unused costumes. One of them was a caption hook outfit for Oswald, which I was supposed to defeating enemies more easier. But never made the cut and instead was repurposed as the items in chest in the game.
