Wow. Fun to play with but as a backpacker I prize low weight and low fuel consumption. A quiet stove is also important to me and why I usually carry an alcohol stove. Thanks Ernie.

Excellent setup! Mine is remarkably fuel-efficient, and the high altitude of Colorado doesn't impact its performance. Although Jetboil receives a lot of praise, my setup enables me to prepare a wide range of dishes, not just noodles. It has an adjustable control for both fuel and flame size, and it accommodates all my pots, including a 12-inch cast iron skillet that I use when camping with my children, perfectly. My model is different from the one shown in the video, yet I adore it. Personal preferences vary; the only drawback is that it's somewhat noisy, but since the company also manufactures airhorns for semis, it's an ideal match that doesn't bother me. My only wish is for a slightly longer fuel line.

I just purchased one of these and it works great. I have only used it with butane and I don't have a need to run it wide open. It is easy to adjust the flame so that it gives just the right amount of heat without wasting fuel. It is nice and stable and works well with fairly large pots.

Now that is one beast of a stove , someone really needs to craft one out of titanium then it would be light enough to enter earths orbit .

Hello Ernie. Interesting video although I would be interested in seeing the outcome of the boil test with fuel consumption using a smaller flame. All the heat energy is being wasted by going up the side of the pot. You would never cook indoors with the heat so high. Your wife would kill you for damaging the pot handles.

Slick looking stove, I might just get this for emergencies as I have a bunch of isobutane canisters (we have regular hotpots using an Iwatani stove)... Edit: Dude, that flame at 4:25 reminds me of engine tests for F-16s. That's an insane amount of power. Probably great for wok cooking and maybe heating a tandoor, but other than that...

In full cry, the equivalent of a Saturn Five Rocket Engine during Launch. There looks like a lot of heat gets wasted going up the sides of the pots. I'm not into 'boil times' and 'power' at this stage of my journey .. fuel efficiency / economy now being more important to me. However, there would be applications for this stove in a camping setup using larger base pots and one does not necessarily have to run it at full power. Thanks for the share .. take care ..

Thanks Doc! I would love to see how efficient Trangia 25, Trangia 27, and Trangia Mini are with alcohol and Trangia gas burners. I know the Storm Cookers are going to do well in the wind, but I wonder if their efficiency warrants their size and weight... Thanks again, Mark

any seasoned backpacker worth his salt will have a stove ring in his arsenal anyways, they contain those "unregulated" monsters. i have everything. It makes everything works in every situations with every effing devices. I own one of those and they are awesome. Below 2 minutes boiling kettle. Minimal fuel consumption.

I would assume that there is a point at which there is too much heat being created for the pot to absorb making it inefficient. You'd have to do a series of tests at different valve settings to find what was most efficient.

Those brass burners look well made. With a pressure regulator allowing it to simmer it would be a nice stove, even if the cost went up a little.

I totally get calling at the space shuttle stove. But there’s a little bit of generational perspective here because when you first unfolded it and set it down it looked just like the moon lander to me… What we called the “LEM.” I love its attitude, but I would feel like I was wasting fuel and would get yelled at for bringing home all those scorched pots and pans!!

Excessive fuel use would not be good for back-packing. It might be alright for cooking a lot of meals for a troop of scouts but I think it would burn through the canisters quickly and might heat up too much to exchange canisters. The flames seem to be burning around the end of the piezo igniter and its housing. How did that fare? Looks very impressive but those sort of boil times can be reached with cheaper and less fuel hungry stoves. The noise might be an issue, for those folks considering taking one on a hunting trip. I would imagine all the wildlife within a mile radius would hear it and flee the area. I couldn't see it simmering, or hear it for that matter, as your audio suddenly went silent. It looks rugged, as though it will stand up to a lot of abuse but a lot of similar stoves are cheaper and lighter and will do the same job. Lastly, I prefer to buy goods produced in my own country. I have had problems in the past with Chinese Warranties and returns of faulty goods. To my mind, it just isn't worth the hassle. I try to buy domestically, where possible, to support our own economy. I find it creates less of a problem if anything goes wrong with the product.

Looks and sounds overkill to me. I can boil with several of my stoves in around 3 minutes. I'm not worried about an extra minute or two to get a boil. Heck, my fancy feast stove boils in 6-7 minutes with little fuel. The Wadeo could possibly be used to braze or cut steel.

Ernie, Please learn how to do some simple math so that you can calculate BTU for yourself. BTU ratings are calculated based on INPUT, and thus can be derived from the weight of the fuel consumed. In a gram of propane, there is about 50 kj if energy. This means there's about 1000 kj of energy in 20 grams. Per your testing, this was burned in 2.34 minutes. Thus, to calculate the number of kj consumed in 1 hour, you must multiply by 25.7 to get 25707 kj. From there, you can convert to BTU by dividing 25707 by 1.055 to get to 24365 BTU. Thus, the BTU ratings is within the (very wide) margin of error. Based on this, I am inclined to believe the advertised boil time, as they likely used a larger pot, with a lid that fit very well. In your testing, a large amount of time flame was going around the pot, and thus energy wasted. If a larger pot was used, there likely would have been a faster boil time. I understand that these videos are supposed to be entertainment. However, using more scientific rigor might be called for, as these tests are incredibly unscientific, with many variables changing. Before making a claim like "I'm not sure if I trust the 25000 BTUs", please be sure to do your due diligence. To improve the scientific rigor of your testing, it would be beneficial to use the same pot every time, with the same lid, and the same temperature water. If you can manage it, it would also be beneficial to do it with the same environmental temperature. I love these videos, and they are a great way to look at cool stoves, which to me is very entertaining. However, I hope you can improve your testing consistency going forward.

Good review but it’s a thumbs down from me. If at all possible I will not buy anything made in china. The thing is designed by someone that hasn’t got a clue about backpacking stoves. Maximum heat output is not required especially when most of it goes up the side of the kettle or even the large saucepan. Sorry for me nothing beats the original gas powered Trangia. Often copied but nothing comes close.
