I love how you got into pulling apart the crowns. The visual is very helpful. 😃

This plant roots very easily from even a single talk peeled off of the crown, and i have seen a decent root system on a single complete stalk in only a few weeks when the cuttings are rooted in a pasteurized 50/50 mix of sand and vermiculite. Plants rooted this way may take jp to two years to begin bountiful production.

Great content. I've divided & sold rhubarb crowns (different patches each year). I also started a lot from saved seed from old homesteads. Year 1: seeded in pots, year 2: nursery bed & then that autumn, sell as young crowns or plant in permanant (fence row) location.

Glad you liked it. I have also used old hay or grass clippings. Basically anything to keep the weeds down.

@@ryankolodziej6732 I usually add some composted/well rotted manure and top up the mulch every year or two. I love rhubarb.

Good practical info. I appreciate that you aren't a California Suburb back yard froo froo Gardener. Voices like yours are needed.Ie how you separated the Crowns. Many KZbinrs slice a big crown with a shovel. Your way makes much more sense.

Good to know! Thank you. I’ll have to collect all our saw dust and use it as mulch to keep the weeds and grass out. Definitely am struggling with that so I hope it works!

I noticed you don't bother to cut off your flower stalks so that the plants will put more energy into growing edible stalks - why not?
@ryankolodziej6732

I actually don't see any evidence in the field to support the early removal of the seed heads. My observations are that pulling the bolted stalks disrupts the surrounding stalks causing damage and wilting. We get a very uniform recovery by picking the entire plant including the bolts all at the same time. Like timing harvest of other plants with flowering. I believe that the 1st seasonal picking of your rhubarb should coincide with the flowering. Ideally sometime during the bloom but before it goes to seed.

@@ryankolodziej6732 That is a very interesting observation. Most home growing videos strongly advise cutting out the flower stalk as soon as it appears. I will try both methods to see which works best for me.

@@ryankolodziej6732 WOW I never heard this before. I just cut off the flowers, but also harvested the stalks that were ready. Last year I did the same thing, ended up with 3 harvests of stalks. I don't harvest the whole planet. But this year I have to divide some of the plants.

Awesome video!!!! Could you use softwood sawdust instead of hardwood sawdust? I have tons of softwood mills around me.

@@ryankolodziej6732i wouldn't recommend use of mulch containing Black walnut (juglans nigra), but have not noted allelopathy with the Carpathian or English walnuts or butternut (sometimes also called "white walnut").

Wood chips or sawdust work great. They keep weeds down and hold moisture as well as providing fertilizer. We apply more wood chips or mulch every 5 years. Thanks for the question!
