Hey Eric, there is a much more ACCURATE way to calculate MPG. 1. Top off tank. 2. Set trip counter to zero. 3. Drive any number of miles but best to drive at least half a tank. 4. Fill up tank. 5. Divide miles driven by gallons used. NO NEED TO DRIVE CAR TO NEAR EMPTY!

Great job. I like it when someone does something special with a non descript mostly unloved vehicle you would not expect. I get tired of the Mustang, Camaro, etc., usual builds. Way back in the day we shoehorned a small block into a Chevy Vega, in order to get to the spark plugs we drilled holes right about where they were on the inside of the fender well and called it good. Maybe that's the way to go if it doesn't compromise any structural integrity. Congratulations on making the Holy Grail of car crafting magazines and also great to hear about non issues on your trip

I live in Georgia. Back in 2003, I bought my 1968 Ford Galaxie convertible from a guy on eBay who lived in Dayton, Ohio. I flew up there and drove it home, so I am familiar with driving from Ohio to Georgia in an old car, although my drive was a good bit shorter - Dayton to Atlanta, not Cincinnati to Jekyl Island. And I didn't have nearly as nice an experience as you did -- broke down twice. But that's what AAA memberships are for. ;-) Looking forward to seeing the Fairmont in Car Craft magazine! That is so cool!! Congrats!! Excellent story, bro!

For all your European, Australian, Asian, African, Russian, South American, New Zealander and Canadian fans, 16 Miles per gallon is around 15 Litres per 100 Kilometers. Around twice that of a normal car, but quite impressive for such a muscular machine. Great video thank you Eric.

Casey Stoner twice that of a normal car ?? My saab 9-5 Aero chugs about 8,5 to 12L per 100km depending on how frisky i get with the throttle and thats a pretty normal car i'd say :D Anyone else noticed the strange phenomenon that right after getting your paycheck the car is both faster and thirstier than it is right before getting the next paycheck ??? Wierd stuff that is...

Congrats Eric! Sounds like Oliver was a great success! RE: Overheating - I would not lift the back of the hood to try and alleviate heat from the engine bay. This actually wont work. Brief aerodynamics lesson here: Air moves from High to Low pressure. The base of the windshield is a high pressure zone, your engine bay is a relatively low pressure zone. Opening up the cowl area will only result in an ingress of air into the engine bay. This is why Cowl Induction hoods exist and the same effect will happen at the rear of the windshield. Instead, I don't know how big of a pain in the rear it would be, you could box your radiator in to the front openings and then try and build an undertray to pull air out from behind the radiator to avoid having to ruin the sleeper look. Otherwise, another option is fender vents, but those aren't really very good at pulling heat out of the engine bay and not very sleeper either! =( You could also build a front airdamn and splitter to try and build up a high pressure area in front of the car. This can be more subtle than the ridiculous ones on a full on racecar.

Not too sure I followed as to why the size of the tank matters to figure out fuel economy. Fill up tank, write down the odo, fill up tank again miles later and calculate it out how far you went.

Yes and no. Depends on the driving conditions. Also, I'm not of a mind to run the tank completely empty as I'd rather not be stranded. That said, I believe my estimate of 15mpg is accurate.
@TravisReddell
@TravisReddell 6 жыл бұрын
You don't have to run it empty to use this method. Technically you can drive any amount of miles then refill and do the math. Edit: For example, your odometer says 125,000 miles. Fill up the tank. Drive 100 miles (or whatever you want). Fill up tank again. If it took 10 gallons to fill up then the math is 100 miles ÷ 10 gallons = 10 MPG.
@bcubed72
@bcubed72 6 жыл бұрын
Travis R Too many variables there. How quickly does the pump cut off? Are you parked on even a slight slope? Did you drive uphill/into the wind/etc? You really need to keep a log of a half dozen or more fill ups to get accurate data. Ideally, you'd fill up at the same pump each time.
@TravisReddell
@TravisReddell 6 жыл бұрын
bcubed72 yes, that is all true. But it's still more accurate than trying to guess your tank size and doing it how etcg did it. Also, a trip that long would have enough fill ups to get pretty damn accurate.
