Some of you have questioned why I'm building a Ford Fairmont. Some of you don't see the point. Some of you feel the car is junk and I'm wasting my time and yours by making videos about it.
Some of you also get it.
This video is for those of you that either came in late, or aren't in the know as to what the capabilities of these vehicles are and why I'm building one. I'm not saying that they're the perfect sports car, if that was the case, I would have been done long ago. No, what I'm saying is that if you're going to build a 'sleeper' like I'm building, the Ford Fairmont is a really great platform to work with. At least in my eyes.
Intro music by Eric Cook "ETCG1 Intro".

Yeah put out what you want to if you're happy with the view numbers being whatever amount of people are interested in it. If however you need views for income to live it's probably best to stick with what the audience wants. I get this car, it'll be cool when done but people aren't watching the videos.

Amen Generally people who talk shit just have not a shred of knowledge on the subject so they criticize out of idiocy. The classic I can't understand a lick of what you are saying so I'll just say "your project is stupid" and continue to be a dick. People like that are morons but in the end there is no easy fix for stupidity.

Hey Eric! First, the Fairmont is a great idea. Secondly, if one would put their thinking cap on. They would see that this build applies to ANY CAR! All the work done to this vehicle could be executed across multiple car lines. Folks have issues with thinking outside of the box. The interesting part is you are not even the trailblazer for this exact project. Oh well some like things all neat a tydy never venturing out of their own world. Keep it up Eric!

Thats exactly why I can't figure out why people are so pissed off about this build. Any of this applies to other builds. And in some ways more then some may think, for example the rear suspension he's installed and is taking us through how to set up is exactly the type of rear suspension that a 3rd gen F-body has stock.

Been following this build since day 1. Loved watching every step of it. Many of us home mechanic DIY'ers have or think about doing projects just like this all the time. And for all of us with projects that never got off the ground or made it to the finish line, we're cheering you on. Awesome work and can't wait til you get everything buttoned up.

Eric, I agree with most of the comments here. You are building what you want and bring along anyone who wants to watch, learn or build along at home. I know I made the comment about the toolbox video that may have annoyed you but as I said in my second comment on the toolbox video I didn't mean to upset you. I really do support your work and enjoy almost every video you make. I don't want to be wrapped into the "troll" label. Build your sleeper. Build your dream. You have the support of many of your subs and myself. I won't stop watching. I am a Mopar guy and I own one of those near 500hp SRTs. Keep up the great work. Stay dirty!

It is cool to see this build happen. Don't feel bad. People are used to seeing a car built in a 20 minute montage on TV and just don't get that that isn't how life actually works. You obviously have a passion for this. Pursue it without apology! It is cool.

Eric please post what you want to do and love to do. If you don't at that point it just becomes a job. The audience that tends to favor the repair videos will either adapt or leave but just remember that you will pull in a new audience with your awesome build. This is your first car build and once it's built it will be amazing! That in itself will bring your channel to a new level. Can't wait to see more build videos.

I wrote you a few years ago telling you that while I'm not much of a mechanic, I watch you religiously because of your obvious passion and love of what you do. I still see that same level of excitement. As you mentioned, this Fairmont project moves you. Just do it and the viewership will come. This is just a transition period for your channel. Viewers who want repair videos will migrate elsewhere and those who love builds will find you and subscribe. The only way to fail is to try to make everyone happy. Just be true to yourself.

Eric keep it up. I love seeing the whole process of building a car from the bottom up and seeing what could go wrong and how you resolve those issues. As for pleasing the subscribers that purely want repair videos, maybe make a poll for them to vote on your website so they can request a specific type of repair video. That being said you have put out hundreds of hours worth of repair videos so you arent going to please everyone. stay dirty

Eric, I completely understand ! I'll be 70 on June 20th, and I drive a '81 C-10, with a twin turbo 383 small block, ( 673 HP, 21 lbs of boost, all forged internals ) , original paint and dents, that I drive on a daily basis, to just kick the stuffing out of so called "supercars". Like you, full aftermarket suspension, reinforced chassis, brakes, etc. It's a natural gas ! It's really pissed a few people off to get beaten by a white-haired old man in a beat up pickup truck. I did all my own work, over a couple of years, and that just makes it more fun to run ! I hope you enjoy your 'sleeper' as much as I do mine !

It's single handedly given me the confidence to work on cars and now that is one of my favorite hobbies and I have saved tons of money. I was super excited when you introduced the idea of doing the Fairmont way back when. I still like watching the Fairmont videos because they still have TONS of great info, because they are similar to the repair vids except you have WAY LESS rust to deal with. Keep up the great work Eric. I really appreciate your efforts and I hope that you can continue to produce content. By the way, I can't wait to see what you do to "hide" that huge intercooler, OMG!

Eric, people either get it or they don't. I put a Dodge Omni GLH Turbo Engine and suspension from a Showroom stock racer that had been rolled and totaled into a Plymouth Horizon. Gee I loved that car. When I was finished I had worked on every nut, bolt and system of that car. It was faster than a V-8 Mustang. Build your car, your way. It will give you pleasure for many years. There is always another repair to do, to be forgotten next week. Thank you for sharing this process with us.

Greetings from the UK, and if today's your wedding anniversary, my sympathies. Thank you for explaining the logic behind this build. I'll be honest and admit that as a Brit subscriber I have only watched a couple or so episodes with only mild interest. Now that I understand the mission I will watch all future postings. I am a huge fan of 'a wolf in sheep's clothing', the long-winded way of saying 'sleeper' over here. I have had several over 50 years of motoring. My current daily drive is a well maintained below average mileage 2003 Lexus IS 300. It looks like what it is - a 14 year old small saloon, but put the pedal to the metal and it chews up boy racers and brings a smile to my face every time. The thing is almost nobody recognises what they are up against. My special drive is a 1990's Bentley 6.75 litre. A luxury grandpa cruiser, driven by this old wrinkley. But watch the faces of the Audi, BMW and WV Golf drivers when they try it on! Fantastic fun - but that right foot does get expensive. I look forward to the next episode.

I've just spunked £247 on new shock absorbers, clutch etc for a 1998 Toyota Corolla that cost me £250. The girlfriend is angry at me, because she wants a "nice car". Not to drive, but so she isn't embarrassed when I turn up in my 'Rolla. Same as people I work with, saying my car is shit. You know what? Feck them. I like my Corolla. It is tired, but like you it's a project. And at the end of the day you will have a unique car, likewise I will - although I'm not doing the sleeper thing. I'd rather it looked fast rather than go fast, can only do 70mph in the UK anyway! And the car isn't shit. It's basic yes, old looking yes. But it's cheaper to run than a new car, cheaper to insure, cheaper to run. And all the work I can do myself. But yeah, keep up the good work. I haven't kept up with the project but I do watch the other videos about techniques although some Fairmont videos have helped me too. I'll drop you a message soon with a video to my Corolla, you can see what I mean then.

Hi from Australia I'm with you Eric, love your honesty and being so generous to us all. I started watching for info on drive shafts and I'm still here probably because of your level of detail, genuine sense of humour and also the Fairmount project. one thing I would say is that I think we all want to see you enjoying it a lot!!! I like Mighty car Mods approach to really giving the audience a feast of a video once a project is finished. so if you go to the drag strip. record as many angles as possible especially the view from your angle and yoir reaction. the car launching from the outside etc. I would wait an extra month to see more footage :) I hope yoir high production value means that you may earn residual income from these videos for years to come you have earnt it!

I gave up on "sports" cars (mainly pony and sport) for two reasons; 1) Pony cars: I was literally harassed constantly and consistently by cops for driving just like everyone else or having something so simple as a blown license plate bulb. Some were REALLY mean, insulting, accusative, nosey and aggressive about it, too. 2) My two seat sports car was fantastic, luxurious and drove like a go cart. Any and every time I drove that car it was FUN. But it had very limited utility and frankly everyone was scared to ride in it so it was a little lonely. Honorable mention: They either loved or hated my Crown Vic. If they weren't flashing their lights, tapping their brakes after they passed, waving to me or showing off in front of me in their own cruiser, they were stopping me and treating me just like they did in the performance cars. If you want to "slip by" just like everyone else and NEVER get stopped as long as you're a sensible driver, get a mid-sized 4 door sedan (think Taurus or Camry), van, truck or SUV. It also needs to be a relatively later model as Eric mentioned, as well. An old car also sticks out, though obviously nothing like a pony/sports car.

Eric, there's no need to apologize or explain. Haters gonna hate. Personally I love how the project is coming along. Watching the Fairmont evolve over the course of the past couple of years is intriguing to me. There are people out there who have taken far worse claptraps and turned them into street monsters, and they may have gotten flak for it, but that never stopped them. So as far as I'm concerned, you owe nothing to anyone as far as that goes.

The late, great actor Paul Newman (who was no stranger to cars!!) was known to say that for the street he favored a VW Rabitt with a V8 stuffed under the hood. Why? Because he liked seeing the expression of wealthy Ferrari and Porsche drivers in his neighborhood when he blew their doors off with a boxy little VW economy car. Newman won four SCAA national championships (79-86) driving Datsun sedans. In 1979 he placed second in the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, and later teamed with Carl Haas to form Newman/Haas Racing which enjoyed a long and successful run in Indy car racing, including a CART championship in 1984 with Mario Andretti behind the wheel, and another in 1991 with Michael Andretti driving. Eric, you and Paul would have hit it off big time! You both understand how great 'sleepers' are to drive around town! You both enjoy working in front of a camera! You and Paul love to drive! And i think Newman even enjoyed turning a wrench now and again. Who knows what the future holds for Eric The Car Guy! Keep wrenching and turning out the best instructional auto build and repair videos on the web!

Personally, I think it's cool that Eric is building a Fairmont instead of a Krustang. Fox-body Mustang builds are basically a cliche. At least this is a little different. Plus, the Fairmont has more sleeper potential.

The most popular KZbin channels are usually build projects as well as street or drag racing channels. Even on build projects there is stuff to learn if you pay enough attention. Good job Eric!!

I bought a used 1979Ford Fairmont in 1984and it was a great family car. I had a young family and drove a fair amount for work and never had a minute of trouble during the two years I owned it. Good car.

I came across your fairmont build when I was doing research on possibly buying a foxboy mustang to use in NASA AI. I ended up getting a SN95 96' Cobra, but a ton of the same parts and stuff applies to the SN95 and I really appreciate you doing the work and showing all of us.

I really get what you are going for. I've spent the last 10 years building a 1966 Chrysler Newport 4 door into a mild sleeper. I can attest to how hard it is to find parts and the astronomical price once you find them. I love the look on someone's face when a car that big passes them when their trying to race me thinking I'm slow.

I'm so tired of you having to apologize for building what YOU WANT. If you want to build it you shouldn't care what everyone thinks it's yours and no one else's.

Eric, if you gave me a choice between two cars, a Mustang and Fairmont, both built identically, each one as fast and agile as the other, I would choose the Fairmont every single time. You would never expect the darn thing. Imagine you pull up to a stop light next to a Mustang.. even a new one and blow the freaking doors off of it. Eric, you've made a huge fan out of me over the past few years, I was a fan a few years back, I was a fan when the Fairmont videos started, and I'm every bit the same fan now. That will never change. You can upload Fairmont videos for the next 10 years if you like, I will watch and enjoy them all. Thank you so much for all you do Eric!

I have to say I really like the project. The whole sleeper thing is very appealing and playing with all that power will undoubtedly be fun. I wanted to say something about the rear suspension; it's a wise choice in my view and would benefit an otherwise stock car because real-life A-B driving on mixed roads is all about handling and rarely about brute power unless all the roads you use happen to be pretty much straight. Of course, here in the UK we have very few straight roads and most are narrow so the desire for horsepower has never caught on in quite the same way as in the USA.

O.K. I've said this before, love the Fairmont project. In a matter of speaking, you could say that I am living vicariously it through the videos.Enough of that though, I've gained a new insight of seeing that even the best of plans of skilled technicians need guidance. Nothing like seeing a knowledgeable guy get humbled by his own ambitions.
