I used to grow veges in a greenhouse in my back yard. After learning how much effort it took to run even a small greenhouse, I don't complain about farmer's market prices anymore. Now I can't eat canned green beans anymore!

I bet I could build a carriage for that-adjustable in height-36" wide wheel base where you wouldn't have to bend over at all. I would need a sweep to transfer cut to tote.

That looks like a great tool, however I have an alternate suggestion for crops that you want a pretty finish on. Why not get some steel (plastic may work?) mesh and let your spinach (for example), grow through the mesh and when it is ready to harvest, lift the mesh and run a long blade (preferably the width of your bed/mesh) beneath it? This way you should be able to get all the edible/pretty parts of the plant you want stand straight up when you lift the mesh, while you chop them from underneath with one motion. Maybe selecting different size mesh depending on the size of the crop would help too? Don't know if this makes sense, but its just a suggestion and in my mind seems not very labour intensive (except maybe in the beginning - set up) relatively speaking.

I need to get up and running first, I currently reside in an apartment with no land where I can grow food. I have been trying to get a place with my own bit of earth I can grow on, but after watching your videos it has made me think a little differently about how and where to grow. I will let you know if it works with video footage when I do, but I may only start with the micro-greens. Thanks for the reply.

I'm from the east-coast, but I've spent a lot of time in southern BC and Alberta. I actually had a condo and lived in Pemberton for a while. Southern BC is beautiful and you guys are world leaders in farming IMO. I would suggest you coming over to the maritime's and checking out our farming methods too. There's a rich history of irrigation ideas in these parts that you might benefit from. I really like your video's, I just recently found them and I'll be binging on them for a while. I would think that keeping this harvesting tool clean is very important. No doubt there are their specific guidelines and or regulations in regards to sanitation and safe food handling when harvesting by hand, but what about when using this tool?

Urban Farmer Curtis Stone Urban: Including the $2000 in medication to reduce the stress I mentioned, and the 3 prototypes @ $300 a piece, I would be up to $2900 for me to make a working unit. If I sold that unit for $500, it would still be a better profit than farming BEFORE I learned from you and your channel. It's called sarcasm. But, I am glad I happened upon your videos. I have been wanting to get into gardening for my own use and had no idea all these tool saving ideas were even out there. It's been years since we had our own garden and they were always full of weeds and bugs. I have over 200 head of registered Quarter horses and we have been thinking about starting a medicinal marijuana growery and also a greenhouse with livestock feed sprouters so they have fresh greens year round. Plus I would like to be self sufficient when the SHTF. Thanks for posting the videos.

Maybe a serrated blade with a deep "v" in the serration would harvest spinach better from the stem up. I usually prefer to pick spinach and chard from he base of the stem. But even for just curtin only leaves a "v" shaped blade might act more like targeted scissors and help with getting just the leaves for a salad blend.

I'd probably say arugula, it is super easy to grow and generally there is a decent market for it and it goes well in so many mixes. Tatsoi is another good one.

You would need to add that machine to a cutting machine. What I mean add four wheels with hight adjustments about 2 to 7'inch were you can push that machine instead of holding above the leaf crop. Some folks may want big cuts like when eating Swiss chard or spinach.... a sweeping cutting machine

I'd assume hand pulling would work. Those beds are pretty clean though. The benefit of planting so closely together is that it smothers our weeds from having room to grow. Even if a weed tries to grow in between established plants, it won't have much room to fit & will stay easy to pull. Though I haven't noticed bind weed in the video. That stringy weed can root in a pinky width of space, & digs super deep into soil.

I have an idea where you wouldn't need to hold the harvester. A single tensioned wire guide rope running over the whole length of the crop. The wire guide rope would be fixed to 2 adjustable aluminium 2X2 telescopic poles that slip into 2 metal spikes in the ground at either end of the crop. The wire guide rope would have a metal ring for sliding along the whole length of the crop. Attach wheels to the harvester and a rope to the metal ring and stand at one end of the crop and pull the harvester or put it on a electric pully. I'd get the harvester inventor to make a 4 feet harvester with wheels on the back that can be adjustable heights same as a lawnmower. I'd grow crop beds 3 feet wide giving you 6 inches between each bed for the wheels to run on using the pully system. The pully system could be set on gantry rails instead of spikes in the ground depending on the usage of the harvester. 2 single rails at either side of the crop with the aluminium telescopic poles fitted to wheels or slip and slide rails and just move on to the next crop. I'd definitely get a harvester built with wheels a foot wider than the crop bed. Brilliant videos, unbelievable amount of produce from a 1/4 of an acre. Well done. I've been trying to grow salad greens this year for the first time. It's been very dry. Very little rain has fallen. Finally got enough ready for one market and sold some. But, we are really concerned about the chance of people getting sick off of my product. Should I be? I've been eating the stuff regularly and feel fine. Mom is stressing out because of an upset stomach. Not sure if it is product related or what's going on. I feel fine. Any thoughts?
