A note about ancient Greece, mercy was very much NOT considered a virtue. Sparing an enemy was an insult, implying they were so little threat they didn't warrant death. More than that, the gods demanded total victory (generally meaning razing the city to the ground and enslaving or killing everyone). Wet Hades would be both annoyed that he 'spited' his son as well as pointing out to him that if he HAD killed him then P-daddy would never have known who to come get revenge on.

Hey guys! I've been loving the reactions so far ❤ Just some things to maybe keep in mind: - if you dont want spoilers i would say try to not google things. Not everything is told in the same order as the original/has the same details so you could get spoiled/misled if you google things. All your questions will get answered in the musical or in the comments anyway :) - every single song is essential to the story and will come back in some way! - the reason eurylichus (odysseus's second in command) touched the hair lovingly as you said, is because the headband odysseuss is wearing was politis, their childhood bestfriend who died in the last saga, he's trying to make a point! - fun fact: when they opened the wind bag their home was already in eyesight, which makes this all the more tragic

Also some insight on the poseidon stuff. In ancient Greece mercy was seen as highly disrespectful, it's like you don't even see your foe as worthy enough to defeat you.

"Luck runs out" is not a filler. Not at all. And it's not about Odysseus running out of luck either. Think about it. Eurylochus, Odysseus' right-hand man, questions his decisions in front of the entire crew. He questions the competence of their captain and king. And on top of that, he's a man who is the voice of the entire crew. Listen to his lines. We can often hear the chorus of the other soldiers repeating his words. They respect him and take his opinion into account. And now this man has accused their king of doing stupid things. Think about what this could lead to in the long run.

29:00 Greek mythology paints the gods as very human in how they interact with mortals and each other. That's probably on purpose. The theory goes that these stories were used as examples of what to do or not to do in a given situation, with the gods representing the consequences of whatever choices were made. Also, the mother of Polyphemus (the cyclops featured in the Odyssey) was a sea nymph named Thoosa. Whenever the gods had children with nymphs, the children seemed to have quite a bit of variety to them. Sometimes they were monsters, sometimes other nymphs, sometimes even gods.

I don’t think I’ve read any version of the Odyssey where the wind is a gift from Athena. As far as I’m aware, it’s always been a gift from Aeolus who helps him on a whim. I guess there are some versions that are really Athena-centric.
@n3mo_17
@n3mo_17 9 күн бұрын
It's not that wind is a gift from Athena, rather the storms were a punishment from Athena for the treatment of Cassandra by Ajax. I don't think this is mentioned in the Odyssey itself, rather were a later addition.

That was Polites’ headband Eurylochus touched. He was referencing how they’ve both lost a close friend in this. Also, cyclops were usually created if a god had a child with a nymph

in case anyone did not get this Poseidon states " I am your darkest moment" . This statement was the same statement Odysseus told the cyclops in the cyclops saga when he revealed his name. I love how word play is a big factor in a lot of these scenes and brings you back into the story from before. Also this version of the odyssey is not in order at all and altered in many ways.

About your copy of the Odyssey, there are translations into more modern english that are a lot easier to / more fun to read (for me at least). But there are a LOT of different translations you can find. I personally read Emily Wilson's translation

@@nickyoung4541 I think it must be. It probably starts with the Iliad, which is why when he just opened to the beginning and started reading, he got the first lines of the Iliad. It seems to have just slipped his mind that it's organized that way, though, since the storm at the beginning of the Odyssey that he read about is indeed at the beginning of the Odyssey (although since the Odyssey isn't told chronologically, it's not the same storm at all!).

Yes, Odysseus meets with the wind god Aeolus in the book, got the bag, was told to keep it close and his crew opened it. They also opened it when home (Itacha) was on the horizon.

i would say to remember, its loosely based on the odyssey. not an entirely one to one recreation. there are some liberties taken.

The romans that heard this story really disliked Odysseus. The romans were all about battle honor, taking your enemy head on until only one of you stand. That's why the romans prayed more towards Ares instead of Athena. I don't know how the greeks felt though

The Greeks loved it. In Greek culture, trickery was considered a valuable asset, while the Roman’s thought it was a sign of weakness

The Odyssey isn't told in chronological order, the way that this musical is. It starts in medias res, and all the stuff you're seeing right now in Epic is told in a kind of flashback later on in the Odyssey. The storm you read about in your copy of the Odyssey, the one that sends Odysseus towards the Phaeacians, is a different storm altogether, one that happens *much* later in the story, chronologically speaking. (And given the way that Jorge has changed some of the story, I'm not even sure if it's going to happen at all in Epic.) (To give you an idea of how much later that event happens, the musical has only now, quite near its end with only 2 of the 9 sagas left to go, reached the point of the story that the Odyssey opens with.) Also, just for the record, this musical is not a faithful retelling of the events of the Odyssey. It's been changed in quite a few places, and in some places, it's completely new material. So just be aware: don't expect your copy of the Odyssey to be telling precisely the same story. But! If you do want to read the part of the Odyssey that tells the story of the lotus-eaters and the cyclops and all of that stuff, you'll want to start at Book 9.

So, in the original story the 'floating' island was suppose to float as a floatie or a boat would float but Jorge mistranslated it and when he realized that he made a mistake he was like "Yeah, a flying island is way cooler" and he just went with it

I’m curious why y’all keep looking for “filler songs” when you’ve been told repeatedly by commenters that this is a fully song through musical. To make a full story that way you need songs that are “less epic”. Eury cautioning Ody isn’t filler, it’s an important part of the story. If it wasn’t fully song through maybe that could have been a not-song part of the musical, but this musical doesn’t have not-song moments. And like many other commenters have told you from the first reaction video most of the songs are reprised in key moments in later songs, this one included.

@@WelpHereWeAreOnKZbin I have been wondering the same thing actually. You are not at all idiots! But I do wonder why you keep looking for fillers. Every song has been very plot or character-relevant. Like the one in this video, you can't have the right-hand man questioning and doubting his captain(and king) right in front of the crew. Planting any doubt is the last thing you want to do if you want to survive out on the sea. And because doubt was planted, in the next song we see the crew betraying Odyssion because they were doubting his words about what was in the bag. I do not at all think you are idiots! I am just confused by your thought processes. Have been greatly enjoying your reaction to this.

However, youve completed three sagas at this point and im surprised no one has said anything about this: Credit the artists of the animatics!! A name on screen, saying their name in the video or putting a link in the description to their channels helps a lot. These are all fan made works of art, and its unfair that youre using their content without even giving them recognition
