Thr initial reason Aphrodite doesn’t want Odysseus to be free is because she holds a HIGH standard for the relationship between a son and their mother (one of Aphrodite's most devoted followers was a son of hers and he had a very close bond with her). Since Odysseus never made it home before hia mother died, she holds contempt for him purely out of spite.

Odysseus called for Athena because she's his only friend that isn't dead, and she might be able to make Calypso give him back. 😢 17:50 As the audience, we DID listen to Odysseus but the gods have not, they each go off of the things they've seen/heard about the situation. Apollo noticed the songs of the sirens being silenced, Hephaestus heard about how Odysseus gave up his own crew willingly (to Scylla and Zeus), Aphrodite felt his mother's heart shatter because she's the goddess of love not just romantic love, Ares sees how he failed to do war the way he would've (because Odysseus is a warrior of the mind and fought like it) and so calls him a coward. Hera wants Athena to give it a shot, because of all the tragic heros that Greece has why does *Odysseus* deserve her attention at all? She's the Queen.

**WARNING - FOR TALKING ABOUT SA** I'm glad you reacted the way you did about the song. Since while I listened to it, even if I enjoyed it, it made me so uncomfortable and angry with what I know about the original myth. The thing about Calypso, people compare her to either Percy Jackson's book or like some versions of the poem/story have come out later. I get why they changed her for Percy Jackson, since you can't have a child on an island for weeks at a time with a literal r*pist. So they made it more sympathetic and less fucked up and horrible. But in the actual myth, Calypso has Odysseus around for 7 years (like EPIC) and r*pes him for said seven years since he can't resist her, since she's a goddess. And he cries himself to sleep every night because of it. It's not like she's under a spell to fall in love with him like people say. She was imprisoned there because she sided with the Titan's. Now, I don't know if EPIC will go into these topics but I think Calypso shouldn't be made a sympathetic character like Circe was. Circe had a reason to do what she did (even if it's still fucking horrible), and she stopped when Odysseus rejected her advances since she saw how much he loved his wife. It's not like I want Odysseus to go through what he did - but I think it's important to acknowledge what happened since male SA isn't talked about enough in media and usually it's even made fun of. It's not like I want an explicit song about it either. Jay can imply it, or something, or just have a line about how the island wasn't paradise but hell for him for what she did to him. But I do think she should be depicted accurately at least somewhat. Even if it'd make me uncomfortable and fucking pissed off, I think some things should make people angry or uncomfortable to learn, grow, or become a better person. It shows your human. I think its important that we talk about it, bring light to it, and acknowledge what happened! I do think with the lyrics of Love In Paradise, where she just keeps forcing herself onto him is a form of sexual harassment, and she implies taking him to bed even if he says he's not interested. And she said that the island is trapped under **her spell** so that means that this is to Calypso's spell, meaning she knows what she's doing and isn't under some love spell like people say. Talking to him like he's a pet - "bow down" and "you're adorable". Like, taunting him and flaunting her power over him since she knows he can't do anything to stop her. How she keeps trying to reel him back from jumping. She just makes me so fuckin' uncomfortable and I just want to throttle her. (I have NOT HEARD any of the clips or whatever for future songs of EPIC so please don't spoil that for me. Also, Jay could have changed the story more since they are demo songs, so never assume Calypso or any character won't be changed from the original myth.) Anyways, this is a long ass message and people probably won't read it. I just love Odysseus a lot and want him to be happy and away from that horrible goddess.

I believe in the original myth calypso does assault Odysseus multiple times across the seven years when he refuses her advances, but in epic I recall reading that jorge made it clear that in this version she only keeps him captive Also// my personal theory is that Zeus told hera to not agree to release Odysseus no matter what, hence why he goes “you dare to defy me? Make me feel shame?” Since he added the “or me” condition in the beginning I’m complete convinced that he was going to release ody anyway, but wanted Athena to beg him to do so. The line up of gods to convince is just so strangely stacked in ody’s favor right up until hera

Your reaction to Calypso is 100% like mine. How dare she? He said no, and I have no compassion for her. To her it's a paradise but Odys paradise is called Ithaca. Where his son and wife are. And when she called him Ody I really wanted one of Zeus lightning. And then she pulled the open arms. You little... Even Polites would reconsider that with her. What baffles me more is that people are still defending her. She harassed Ody for years, imprisoned him and ignored his opinions that's no love. That's lunacy. But I guess people would rather call him a cheater(refering to the book) then admit that a woman can do such a thing. Also, I don't know why I expected Zeus to admit defeat. He never does anything to help if it doesn't benefit him. And I agree with you Telemachus must be protected. Ares learned the hard way not to touch him (although his voice was amazing).

I like to think Calypso's magic works similarly to the sirens where they pull from the targets memories in order to entice them. However since Odysseus probably suffered some ear damage from Zues' thunder/lightening in Thunderbringer Calypso can only get some information from his memories (the open arms line, being called Ody, the waiting, etc.) but doesn't know the context of those lines so the ear damage is causing her magic to not just work but pulling information from people who he cares about but have lost so its creating the opposite affect, just like how the sirens could pull some information but some incorrect information but can still create some amount of illusion due to the beeswax

@@Bluecookies165 Yeah but tbh I find it weird that people jump to this specific conclusion though, since that's just not the vibe of the song. If the intention was to imply that, I think the lyrics would've specified it, Epic doesn't really shy away from that subject matter considering how direct Antinous’s lyrics are. There's also a cut song that stated their activities as "walks and late night talks." Not to mention Ody's line being "I won't be drawn to love in paradise" rather than something like "I won't be forced into love in paradise." It's pretty clear that she's trying to convince him to have an actual relationship with her rather than forcing a physical one onto him. I think there's more evidence of her not doing that than the other way around but I won't get into the lyrics of future songs in case you haven't heard them and don't want spoilers. Calypso is still wrong for imprisoning Ody of course but I think it's unfortunate that people don't try to understand the character, dismissing her as an irredeemable villain because of a label she didn't exactly "earn." She's one of the more interesting characters in the musical imo.

@@KENONICAL I was hoping someone would mention this. Disclaimer: I am in no way defending what Calypso does to Odysseus. Her impact trumps her intent wholly and there is no doubt that she is an antagonist here. Also, I haven't seen/read anything Percy Jackson. All of my lore is from Greek mythology, of which I'm not an expert. All that said - Calypso can't help gloamimg onto Odysseus despite his love for Penelope because Zeus (or the Fates depending on the myth) cursed her for being Atlas's daughter and supporting her dad during the Titanomachy. The Olympians won and the Titans (and their supporters) we punished. Her punishment was to be stuck on that island for all time. Every thousand years or so, the Olympians send a hero to her island for her to tend and befriend. Calypso's curse is to fall in love with every hero that shows up, but none of them ever stay, which means another thousand years of heartbreak and loneliness until the next one.

Not to mention she's one of the two women he slept with in different interpretations. Whats notable there is that with Circe it's... dubious how much he actually wanted that? Meanwhile the text is actually quite clear with Calypso: She forced herself upon him. Repeatedly. For years. Btw as a nonhuman she has essentially unlimited stamina. The text makes references to how he spent most evenings on the shore, weeping for his wife and child.

6:52 There is one god about whom it is known for sure that he accept "no" as an answer (it is unknown about some others, for example Demeter). Strangely enough, this is Ares.

18:14 I do love how Jorge shows how different the gods view things. While we view some things as out of Odysseus's control and have compassion, the gods do not. Odysseus's mom died of a broken heart because he didn't make it back home, it's his fault, no context matters. The gods are allowed to be as unreasonable and uncaring as they want, which shows when most of them easily change their minds. They all don't really care one way or the other.

Odysseus: OH THANK THE GODS!!!!! exept the ones who want to kill me (ares, Hephaestus, posiden, zuez, circie) Calypso: I want to kill you 😹 Odysseus: *glares at her* Calypso: ODY GET AWAY FROM THE LEDGE Posiden waiting in the water: DO A FLIP!!!!!!! Posiden: Flip in the water! Odysseus: *does a flip* *posiden is drowning* Odysseus: hold on *he saves posiden* Hera: SO MANY HERO'S!!!!! Posiden: Your my friend now :)

Her answers to Hephaestus, Aphrodite, and Ares didn't actually address their concerns at all in retrospect. They just let her win. Also all your problems with how Zeus acts here is due to him being a Narcicist. It doesn't matter that it's his daughter. It only matters that he lost and felt shame.

random comment for engagement, gl! No need to apologize for length or stopping to talk. Basically that's why we are here xD Yes there are (as of yesterday at least) animatics/visuals on Jorge's channel, yes we'd love for you to watch them (1 viewer's opinion: I prefer when people react to them, they add ALOT of context which helps in general, still love music only tho

Kinda funny that you go of course with Zeus but myth Zeus was one of the gods helping out and only punished him in the first place because god of justice and Helios threatened him. And in general played fair. Also didn't particularly like the Heph excuse since he kinda betrayed them first. Fun fact though Heph and Athena got shipped together in ancient greece, to the point Heph had a temple in Athens despite not being normally worshipped, and a different version of the aphrodite myth they got married. though the normal version of that is he tried to bring the thunder on her.

The animatics were on the streams he did on YT. They will be taken down sometime soon too (I think 10 days from when they were streamed)

To be fair to Aphrodite, she's not just the goddess of romantic love, she's the goddess of all love, including familial love; and she is a mother herself, no excuse since Odysseus' mother clewrly holds no spite in the afterlife, but it makes sense someone as spiteful as Aphrodite would find some excuse to buttheads with Athena, one of the Virgin Goddesses Zeus' response to Athena winning his challenge makes more sense in the animatics, particularly Neal Illusrator's. It isn't so much Athena claiming her prize that ticked him off, its that the Gods he summoned all backing her up as if to push him into doing so. Doesn't help that he had deliberately chosen gods he hoped wouldn't be convinced so easily; Apollo is a God of Music and just as much a playboy as his old man, so he hoped he'd be more incensed for the Sirens; Hephaestys has trust issues due to his being chucked off Olympis by either Zeus or Hera, and then Aphrodite constantly cheating with Aries; and Aphrodite and Aries have contant beef with Athena, and Hera is notorious for not liking any of her stepchildren, so Zeus thought he had set Athena up for failure and it backfired gigantically
