That's probably the point where Odysseus began really shifting towards becoming a monster once he truly saw the weight of his actions, he had to cut the fluff and get home no matter what he had to do to get there

I expected Polites in the underworld so i wasnt that sad about it, but Odysseus' mom came out of nowhere! I think its also because i havent read the odyssey so i didnt know that she died. Also, can we talk about the vocals in The Underworld? Theyre incredible! It is definitely my favorite song of the saga both music-wise and writing-wise.

I interpreted what the prophet said less of “you need to be a monster” and more as “you’ll make bad decisions that will turn you into a monster”. The prophet just can’t say anything else besides the prophecy. In fact, I think he even knows that OdyBoy won’t realize the flaws in his reasoning. The only reason that so many of his men died wasn’t “Mercy” it was telling the cyclops his name. He could’ve been merciful is still strategic. In fact, he gave Circe mercy, and Circe helped him. He was proven that Mercy worked, but he’s so blindsided by his own rage and anger at this mysterious man from the prophecy- WHO IS HIMSELF!! That he isn’t being strategic or showing mercy- if anything, he is going against Athena AND Polites by deciding to be a monster.

surprisingly, the advice Odysseus takes going forward comes from Poseidon even referencing Ruthlessness and that deep down he knows the reality of his actions and how he feels he must change in order to make it back home
