I got fitted by Titleist in Oklahoma once. They had sent a semi truck and trailer to Edmonton for the U.S Senior open about a week and a half before the actual event. For two days they gave people a chance to get fitted. Irons, hybrids, FW woods, driver wedges, putter and even the type of ball for differing conditions you may face. Those clubs changed the game of golf for me personally. I went from 200-yard drives to 260 carries. I went with 6.0 rifle shafts even though I gave up a couple yards overall when my dispersion tightened up into a very small circle. I ended up with forged muscle backs and got an incredible penetrating ball flight. The rifle shafts have differing kick points (where on the shaft that the bending starts at). With shorter clubs where the speeds being generated are lower, a lowered kick point resulted in a lower trajectory with a lot more spin. But with my long irons where the kick point was moved higher, I started hitting towering shots with a 2, 3, and my 4 irons. Prior to this, I had a lot of trouble getting the ball up so to take advantage of the ball speed. Meaning a lot of loss of carrying distance. I usually hit a 3,4, and 5 iron almost the same distances. Suddenly I experienced variances of about 12-15 yards between clubs. I went from about 189 yards with a 3 iron to almost 210 carries. And I could hit a two iron into the air consistently for the first time. My FW woods I decreased the shaft length an inch, and my dispersion rate tightened up an incredible amount. My driver, I dropped down to a softer shaft and started hitting towering draws because I felt I could swing easier and get more snap at the bottom of my swing. That day changed the feel for me, the reliability become more intense, and my self-confidence I was experiencing was exciting to say the least. Over time I have gone from a 14 handicap to now having a 2.9. It changed my golfing life, to be frank. It didn't change my swing so much as it showed me that what I had was useful, long enough and I didn't need to always be looking for that magic move. When they shortened my putter length and got me more over the ball, it allowed me to let the loft of the putter to elevate the ball to start the roll. You have to put a gun to my head to ever take that putter away from me. Once I learned not to pop at long putts, I started getting more and more one-putts, and fewer three-putts. Learning how to utilize the bounce on select shots, that gave me some of the elusive short game I have always lacked. I am better, certainly, but I am still not quite there. But I hover around a 2-3 cap now. and I truly believe that getting fitted properly was my real start of playing golf. Even after having flailed away for close to 10 years prior. If and when I consider new clubs, a proper fitting into any new components will be the only way I would ever again consider buying any set of sticks.

This is why I love golf. People are delusional about their game. In order to go from 200 yard drives to 260 carries you would have to increase your clubhead speed by 33 MPH. NOT HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!

Talking about yardage gains with ap3 vs ap2 - there is a 3 degree difference between them, so an ap3 7 iron is only one 1 degree weaker than an ap2 6 iron. It's great for looking down at the number 7 on the club and thinking, holy shit, I'm hitting this miles, but in actual fact you're hitting a 6 iron. Buy a set of ap3's with a 43 degree PW and you've just got to add a second gap wedge in there at around 48 degrees. I honestly can't believe people are still falling for these cranked lofts. How are the lofts not something this fitter is even talking about!? Going on about the 5-7 yards more distance with the ap3 over the ap2 being a such a positive when you're essentially comparing a 6 iron to a 7 iron. Fitters lose all credibility when they do shit like this.

kind of a paradox. You get your swing to a point that it is still inconsistent because the clubs your swinging are working against you, so to make them work you have to compensate in the swing which will lead to even more headache.

A club that is too light, or too heavy will make it very difficult for a new or learning player to develop a consistent stroke. Better players will argue that fitting is only marginally beneficial, but for a hacker ill fitted equipment can make a huge difference on the score card.

Just got fitted the first time ever and I'm going to start taking lessons when the clubs come in. The Fitter / Coach I'm working with explained it like this to me. The golf swing and equipment discussion isn't the chicken or the egg, it's the chicken AND the egg. I'll see I've got a set of Mizuno Hot Metal irons coming and he is replacing all the shafts on my driver and fairway clubs.

@Liquid bend Hate to say it but i can send tiger out with old wilson irons and he can shoot par how you ask? Because hes good if you suck "club fitting" isn't making your swing better period. This is the biggest waste of money for mid handicap players and weekend warriors.

I also think it depends from day to day. Some days I hit a MB 4 iron like nothing and the other day when my tempo is not ok I couldn't hit a AP3 Pitch straight. As long you don't play every day like a pro you will have ups and downs and it all depends on your physical and mental state. So I have my doubts on club fitting on 1 day (2 hours).

I realize that this is 3 years old now, however I noticed where you had highlighted where the phrase "Lower the launch, raise the spin for more distance" The comment he made was in reference to a particular shot. not to all shots. you don't want low, late risers that have a sharp decent trajectory. That won't optimize distance. You must have hit up on an iron shot which I believe I had heard you say you hit up on everything in the putter fitting video. Sometimes hitting up enables bombs. With irons, it's short balloon shots. Out drive a guy 30 yards then hit the same iron in kinda balloon jobs.

I had a fitting for Mizuno and ended up with KBS 130x shafts after being fit at another place for R-flex shafts. I played the R-flex clubs for about a year and really struggled. I ended up with the JPX 900 Hot Metals and boy it was night and day difference. Make sure you get a fitter that is willing to spend some time getting it right the first time. Now I'm ready to do a driver fitting. The driver is usually not the club that causes me to many lost strokes as I am a fairway finder of about 250-265 yds pretty routinely.

Been playing AP2 for quite a few years now, gamed 714 and 716's. When I tried the AP3 my first impression was game improvement. It didn't look awful by the ball... but it didn't look 'right' either. It is still FAR from a players iron in terms of appearance and shape in my opinion. AP2 is already pushing it with a thicker top line and longer blade length, my 714 CB set was probably the best looking set I have ever owned, although I ended up playing the AP2 because it fit my gaps better in the longer irons to middle irons due to forgiveness and loft (I play a 2 iron driving iron, no 3 iron, 4 and down, which let me drop my hybrid ---i hate those things--- and add a wedge. with CB I needed the 3 iron). The AP3 was also a bit of a let down in that long iron players are left out entirely. All in all, I honestly think they are over hyped, and aimed at the upper middle handicapper and club hacker. Over priced too, better off getting a set of CB or Ap2, this fitter was just splitting hairs and clearly biased towards the AP3, not finding the best club.

The only problem I have with your fitting is that you restricted yourself to just Titleist clubs. I have played Mizuno blades for years (last set was MP 69) but getting a TrackMan fitting, trying multiple clubs from Mizuno, Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, etc. quickly narrowed to two that felt and performed the best, the AP2s and TM P770. After testing various shaft combos, ultimately it was the P770s with Recoil ES SW 780 F4 shafts.

I think even more important than your swing and game is the affect on your body. Constant bad swings due to bad clubs leads to bad body rotation and twisting. Compounded over years leads to back and hip problems. That golfers hunch. Something fitted to you alleviates that stress from improper fitment. You wouldn't wear shoes 2.5 sizes to big or to small. It's the same thing. Get fitted to play longer and more comfortable.

I have an honest, real question. I am planning on doing this in the future, either next year or 2020. What should I be expecting when it comes to price? I understand that the type of clubs I get will keep the price variable, but what is the cost of coming to this facility and getting the fitting done? Or is it included with the full purchase of a full Titleist set? Thank you, you guys well!

Derek Cassady It’s incredibly hard to give you an idea of cost because it can vary so much. With regards to fittings guys like Kevin usually either charge by the session or by the hour. Another option would be to check out Titleist Thursdays which are free for the fitting and demo. You can find one near you on the Titleist website. Now when it comes to clubs this is where it’s so hard to give you a number because it varies so dramatically. A single shaft can cost anywhere from $30-$300. That’s why we say it so important to tell your club fitter your budget at the beginning of the fitting so that you don’t end up fit for clubs you can’t afford.

I'd be curious to see how much it lowers your handicap over the course of the season compared to your old clubs. I would be willing to bet spending that money on lessons would be cheaper and probably have a greater impact on scores. Like the fitter was saying the better you are the less a fitting will generally have on your game. But even so a 30 handicap player isn't going to be made a 20 hcp or less from a fitting. Yes fitting can help and you should especially if you are extremely tall or short but that said if you put a shit swing on the ball you're going to get a shit result.
