I’m going out to big bear on Saturday and I am contemplating mini jigs or minnows on a ball head. Which one would you recommend?

Yes to both. I try everything until i get bit. Those fish change their minds all the time haha. Most are getting into a good bite by the dam currently

Great vid. Any tips for Lake Cuyamaca this week? It’s pretty hot up here.

Fishing from shore will probably be tough as the fish are going to suspend about 5-10’ down from the surface. The warmer water ends up loosing oxygen starting at the bottom of the lake so the fish will hold in the column of water with the coolest water and the best O2 concentration. Id try slipbobbers or a regular bobber with a 5-6’ leader. Jigs, spoons, and spinners may also work

Hello Mr Diehl, I’ve been watching your KZbin channel for a little over a year now. Since I found your channel, I’ve relied on it to help improve my fishing techniques and setup. I typically only fish a few times a year, mainly when my family heads up to the eastern sierras, but I would like to pursue fishing more often. I’ve been using GSF mini jigs and minnows for a few years now and have really struggled. I’ve also tried other plastic baits and lures with minimal results. I don’t mind a bait and wait, but I’m tired of relying on powerbait as my only means of catching fish. I’ve looked at many of your past videos to help figure out what you guys are doing that I’m not, but I’m lost. If there’s any specific video I should watch or advice you can give me on how to fish these plastic baits to catch fish I would really appreciate it. I’m just quite frustrated throwing jig after jig for hours with no results. If you can’t provide help I completely understand, and I’ll continue to watch your videos to gain more knowledge!

No worries at all. Id say from reading your comment and not seeing what your doing that your not presenting your jigs/minnows to any fish. Meaning there aren’t any trout in the section of water your fishing. You dont need to have a flawless technique to get bit. If the trout are there typically all you gotta do is move that bait in front of them and youll get bit. The technique will get refined over time as you catch more in different conditions and all that does is help with consistency of hook ups. If your gear is set up similar to mine, 2-4lb line, 7’6” to 8’ ultralight rod, etc and your doing a slow retrieve with light bounces of the rod, your doing it right. At least good enough to get bit. So I think you may just need to move around more in order to find the biting trout. Thats what we do especially in the sierras. Well hit multiple lakes each day looking for trout that are willing to bite. Just stick with it and it will start to click, im sure of it 🤘

@@SeaSpankerOutdoors I will keep working at it and try moving around more and up and down the water column. Hopefully I’ll start bringing them in and let you know once I start figuring it out. Thank you 🎣🤙!

As a beginner what lures and baits do you recommend to use to catch trout in most situations there’s so much info out there I want to see what you recommend. Love your videos very informative specially for me just getting into trout fishing.
@SeaSpankerOutdoors
@SeaSpankerOutdoors 5 ай бұрын
No worries. Alot of it depends on where you are fishing as all the lakes are different making the trout behave a bit different at each lake. The best way to start is how I did; good old bait and wait. Carolina rig with a 1/4oz egg sinker, Carolina keeper, a 12-14” leader, and a #18 treble hook or a #10 mosquito hook. Powerbait or micetails are solid baits especially when your just starting out. That said, nothing catches more and bigger fish than moving baits, especially plastics (mini jigs, minnows, etc) but it takes a little time to practice and get the techniques down. I typically will have one bait rod going and I’ll throw moving baits with the other. This basically improves my odds of getting bit before I know what the trout are wanting that day.

Rod how do you determine if the water is moving? it is by the wind or it is by the underwater current that we cant see?
@SeaSpankerOutdoors
@SeaSpankerOutdoors 5 ай бұрын
Both. Wind is definitely a big reason but even when its calm most lakes have currents going in different directions at times. The best way to tell is by watching your line after you cast out. Sometimes it will go to the left or right very slowly. But this doesn’t guarantee fish activity. You want to look for intakes were a stream big or small is running into the lake. It may not create alot of current but it definitely changes the water temp in that area and the trout love that 🤘

Is 6lb braid light enough for mini jigging, or would you recommend 4lb?
@SeaSpankerOutdoors
@SeaSpankerOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
I have used 6lb braid for mini jigging and it works well but I definitely prefer 4lb as it casts just a bit better. I typically will use 6lb in special conditions like river fishing where there is a strong current or a spot that may be known for large strong trout with lots of submerged obstacles if that makes sense

Rob " real Deihl " I forgot again brother what size of the fly fishing snaps do you use ? I tried flipping through at what video I saw them on .. I want to say size 2, thanks, bud !.hey you haven't posted lately 😊
@SeaSpankerOutdoors
@SeaSpankerOutdoors 3 ай бұрын
It all depends on which snaps your talking about haha. The Duo Lock snaps that I use for spoons and attaching dropshot rigs are either #0 or #00, the ones I use at Pyramid for the big cuttys are size #2. The fly fishing clips I use for mini jigs and minnows are size L (large) 🤘. Yeah I know, had alot of family obligations this summer so I took a little time off but a new video will be out Monday and things will be back to normal 😎

@SeaSpankerOutdoors
@SeaSpankerOutdoors 4 ай бұрын
You definitely can get them from shore but I would stick to the west end of the lake. Early morning and late afternoon until the sun goes down are your best bets. I usually will only fish there from sunrise until about 9-10 am and then they shut down until late afternoon. If i go in the afternoon usually between 5pm and sundown is the best time 🤘

No worries. We certainly aren’t above some good natured roasting now and then. Nobody’s perfect and Este and I are definitely no exception. Its just hard to understand someone’s intent with these comments on the internet. One thing I draw the line on is someone calling someone else out on my channel. Say anything you want about me good or bad and ill leave the comment up but if you use my channels comment section to criticize someone else im gonna pull the comment. Thats not what this space is for. Just for the record, Este knows those reels inside and out. He has them professionally serviced and can service them himself. He has really taught me a great deal about the equipment we use. What i think your hearing is the braid winding as it comes through to the GoPro mic. Este uses a chest mount so his reel is very close to the camera as I use a hat mount placing my camera much further away. In person the reel doesn’t sound loud at all. All you can hear is the braid cutting through the wind. Tight lines 🤘

@gonfishn 5 ай бұрын
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors, yeah I understand. The really weird thing is my reels don't sound like that and I'm using braid too, that's why I was curious if it was gear whine. I have fished tuna with braid on a spinning reel and never noticed the noise either. I'm a Mechanical engineer so I'm keen to mechanical noises in anything with gears. I know of those reels very well but have yet to use one. I've been so happy with my Pfluegers and Revos I haven't ever thought that I need to upgrade. Any reel with 10 bearings or more is going to be silky smooth. I agree with you on comments from others that may be out of line. This isn't the forum for stuff like that. Keep it fun, keep it entertaining. Thanks for the response Rob, appreciate it.

@gonfishn yes a 100 dollar reel will get the job done but when your using a reel that's anywhere from 300 to 700 dollars the drag and drag clicker are alot different you will here a difference when the line is ripping off the reel..Bobber down😁
@gonfishn
@gonfishn 5 ай бұрын
My Pluegers just don't get the job done, they are smooth and flawless. Drag is silky smooth. It takes very little inertia to spin the reel and when u do it rotates forever before it stops spinning. That's the sign of a well built reel. I can afford a $1000 reel but what's the point! Yeah the more spendy reels might be a few grams lighter in weight but what the heck. I'm choosing mine for performance and joy of use.
