I feel like Ariën is one of the more underrated metal drummers. He's got obvious chops, but he knows how to perfectly utilize them to best support the song. I feel like a lot of drummers either just go too boring and simple all the time or only play super technically. He knows when the song needs more technical and complex playing and when the song just needs a steady drum beat, so the rest of the band can shine. He really doesn't get all the praise he deserves. Definitely one of my favorite drummers.

100% agree that’s exactly how he is. His drumming skill alone is a marvel but even more important then that is what you bring to the song and he adds so much but he never over plays. See that’s the key to being a great drummer it’s knowing instinctively what to add and he could bring any song to a whole other level. The Classical Conspiracy live album shows some of his greatest drumming ever. Actually John Bonham from Zeppelin was the best at making a song even better by his playing. The unique and fantastic drumming and what he could add to a song was just incredible. Stupidly he’s known for being a pounder instead of his intricacy and as I said what he could bring to a song.

Mark Jansen said all the songs on that album were designed for live shows, so... Maybe Consign to Oblivion will be replaced by another song as the finale in live shows...? (I mean, OMEGA is going to deal with The Omega Point - An end). I love Consign to Oblivion, but I think it's time for a new finale.

I don't really like catchy songs (from what I've heard the choruses are very catchy, but I personally prefer either impactful choruses or no choruses at all). I just hope EPICA doesn't intend to abandon their complexity...

@@blivion7203 same here! i like their complex and intelligent songs more than the catchy ones like edge of the blade. but honestly i think they’ve reached a nice maturity to their sound and they keep making songs that maintain that complexity and still sound great live.. only thing im keeping an eye on is the sometimes cheesy lyrics 👀

(Beyond the Matrix & Edge of the Blade did have cheesy lyrics, but they were written by Simone, and not the almighty Mark Jansen...!).
