Been watching Simon for decades, each time is always beyond amazing. At his age to play like this with that melody still going and being soooo crisp and precise, it's just a a level where it would take most of us 17 lifetimes to obtain this guy's vocabulary and playing level. We are truly blessed to have Simon. Love how Simon stuck to his big set, and it seems even bigger, he stuck to his unique finger print and didn't conform or go to a smaller set like most trendy drummers that follow the crowds/trends. Peace

Totally agree. I liked his response to a question about why he always uses such a big kit. He said (and I’m paraphrasing) that a pianist doesn’t bring a smaller keyboard for smaller gigs. Spot on Simon.

I thought the same - the snare is ON POINT. It’s got the precision of a ‘symphonic snare’ and the ‘throatiness’ of a rock snare; perfect.

I think it is the player not the drum, that makes it sound so fantastic. I kinda thought there was some Bonham in there, or Bonham had some of him...chicken egg.
@asor8037Ай бұрын
@@joeblow-nu7mz I agree, his touch is 98% of the sound. That being said, I noticed his signature snares have triple flanged hoops. I remember when getting my first die cast hoopen snare, that I liked the somewhat softer rimshots the triple flanged gave. I reckon this is part of it as well.

The exceptional hand speed and independent use of all four limbs is apparent throughout the years of Simon Phillips' drumming career. He is a very consistent and versatile drummer, and anyone who he has performed with will attest to that. I have been working on my independence since I have been forced to learn to because of the size of my kit. That was the driving force behind Simon's open handed drumming style. You can see that he can lead with either hand, or foot, and the way he uses his left hand on the ride cymbal too. This is the man to take lessons from if you really want to perfect your skills.

Simon Phillips is not just a drummer, he is a musician. His solos, and his playing are not motivated by super speed whit zero musical meaning, like most of the youtube or tik tok drummers this days (AKA el estapario siberiano), au contraire, he is beyond that and plays music, which is rich in tonalityes and most of all, dynamics. I've been watching him for many years and to watch him playing with many people like Lee Ritenauer, Hiromi trio (probably my favorite collaboration of Simon) or the last Protocol album its every time such a pleasure for the senses. Watch him playing is to watch how he moves, how he gestures and how he sound (probably the best sounding drum kit ever) and the result every time is a master piece of pure high quality music.
