I would 100% prefer a singer to stand still if that means they will feel more comfortable to hit their high notes better, than walking around & having a huge stage presence and sound out of breath/not their best.

I hear your critique about Simone's stage presence and from this video you're right. BUT, I have seen them live several times and I never noticed her as being boring. This is also because the band are over all very busy on stage during their shows, so there's a lot going on and when you're in the crowd, you're not necessarily looking at her all the time.

One thing I love about this channel is that it isn’t all sugar and spice. Nice to hear a proper critique - go Dave! That said, I agree with others in the comments - maybe check out a song from the Retrospect concert. It’s a 3 hour gig that I’ve watched many times… Simone is great in that show. But props for honesty man!

Great reaction. I've actually been at that show and I get your point on Simone's performance. In context of the whole concert, she wasn't standing in the background the whole time, she was moving around and entertaining the crowd. Nevertheless she might seem like a diva sometimes 😉 Plus, the video doesn't capture the atmosphere at the concert. It was awesome, great crowd response, great positive vibes. So, I completely understand your point of view and it isn't false at all, but in the context of the whole performance, it might have been a bit premature. Plus, compared to vocalists like Sharon den Adel or Floor Jansen or a lot of other symphonic metal singers, she doesn't move more or less than others. I mean, it simply the kind of music to dance to all the time. 😉 BTW, I'll be seeing Epica live this Friday 🤘😬🔥

This song doesn't focus on Simone as much as others. For me her parts don't demand much moving. But your opinion is valid. This band is big in the symphonic metal scene, also the one which incorporates death metal elements the most. Hope you go back to reacting to them, they have a vast catalog of great music.

Maybe a think to point out, Simone is not the leader, it's Mark Jansen, the guitarist (not related to Nightwish singer Floor, but both former After Forever members). He has a great stage presence, Simone is an amazing singer, pretty teathrical in her movements, but not a leader. And honestly I find it a good balance, it's written nowhere that must be the lead singer to command the crowd (even if it's used to be). But I understand your concern about the use of the stage, an example I watched was an Offspring show, the stage was very big, and they didn't move for the whole show, and that kept a lot of energy away...lukely the next band on stage was AC/DC.

@@THEDavidHeretic He is the founder of the band and the main composer (even if they all partecipate in the writing process, Simone usually write the lyrics), he is also the male singer, so I think it make sense. If you will one day listen to the After Forever, his previous band, I'm sure you will find some similarities with Epica...if you are not too distracted by the female singer :P

@@MarkSpencer83 Simone and Floor are friends, but not best friends. And they were never roommates, it's just a myth that people on youtube keep repeating for some strange reason. And please, no Sancta Terra! That's not even in their top 15 songs. It's not a good representation of what Epica do.

@@MarkSpencer83 No problem mate :) Oh yeah, I like those albums too. And Chasing the Dragon is beautiful. It's just Sancta Terra that I don't like that much. It's good if a reactor does 10 other Epica songs and then Sancta Terra. But some reactors do it as their first reaction, which is not good because it's not a typical Epica song. Floor fans only recommend it because Floor is in it, but they don't care about Epica. Same thing with Ayreon, they only recommend songs with Floor and then don't care about Ayreon anymore. I'm getting tired of that. And I saying it as someone who loves Floor too. But Epica reactions should be about Epica not about "oh you will see a special guest on stage!"

It's a great pleasure to watch your reactions to Epica and Nightwish now. But here you were a little biased, sorry and don't be offended 😄 at the performance of Floor Jansen in the song Ghost love Score, there is not much interaction with the crowd and on stage, and for most of the song, Floor also stood and also left the stage when she didn't need to was to sing, but you gave them the highest score for that concert 😄 maybe it was your favorite song. I love both gigs, both bands, but I admit that the Epica guys have much more technical and complex music for live performances, and they do it brilliantly. By the way, in another official Live with this concert in Paris, Simone is not just standing, she jumps, lights up the crowd and at the same time sings in operatic technique and it's really difficult, you understand how breathless. Epica - Beyond the Matrix (official live video).

Simone is a great frontwoman, I see them live and I absolutely love them It's a whole experience being there, but I agree with you that this wasn't her best performance, maybe she was little tired because it was the last song, but I actually recommend you to react to some of the "Restrospect" show (I suggest "Desing your universe", Serenade of self destruction") and the song "The essence of silence" and "Kingdom of heaven" now you will see what she can do on stage

I've watched them live too and yes, it was about the same. I'm a great fan of Simone in the studio, but I don't think she is that great live. She indeed stands in the same place most of the time with the hand in her back looking like she's feeling back pain(I believe adjusting her Mic equipment or something). Also I don't feel she sings as fluid as in the studio, there are some weird pauses in some parts. Still good tho, just not as perfect as she is in the studio(or their live studio session), or as someone like Floor can do in a live concert. I still loved to watch them live tho, the whole concert was awesome!

A lead singer runnin' around a must? Well, as a fan of old school rockbands (Dutch and English) i should agree, but i don't. This is not old school rock, hardrock or old school metal. In this song Mark Jansen is as much the leader. Jumpin' and runnin' around? Sorry, the olympics are over.... And that's my opinion :-)

I think that Simone was on the back stage because of the audio (probably return) problems she was facing, if you look calmly you'll see her putting the hand on her back a few times on the first part of the song, maybe wireless problems? Then the growl parts of the song came and she got out of the stage, probably to adjust the audio. After the adjustment she came to the front stage, at the end of the song.

I would add to others on your critique of Simone in the first half of this song... it is high on the end of her operatic range and requires a stationary vocal platform... when she returns though she is singing in much the same vocal range it is in a popier style and lends itself to more movement and showmanship

I agree with you on what it looks like in this video with Simone. I think part of it is the editing as well. The camera doesn't focus on her when she isn't singing so we don't know what she is doing. I've seen her in other videos and in those she is up front leading the show. She is a headbanger. Their music is very complex... right up there with Nightwish. I would say it is some of the best in symphonic metal. There are videos of their Decades performance when they are playing with a full orchestra and choir. I would highly recommend watching some of those as well. PS There are performances with Floor as a guest vocalist.

In this song Mark is more the feature than Simone is, so she sort of blends into the background to let him do his thing. When she's out front, she's a lot more involved than this.

I don't know enough about Epica to form a coherent opinion overall. I agree with you that Simone could have been more active. It is in fact possible to go operatic or opera like and be moving. Bruce Dickinson is proof of that. But I don't think I can form an overall opinion based on this one performance. For instance I saw a Nightwish reaction where Floor was more or less immoble, and the rest of the band giving her a wide berth. If I assumed she was like that all the time, I would have been wrong. She was pregnant which the reacter guessed. I simply don't know enough about Simone's reasons. Shrugs

You're the first one to instantly notice the fact that the keyboards are moving on rails. Most commenters think the keyboard stand has wheels, or worse, it's on a skateboard!!! I'm always amazed by these ridiculously stupid comments. Who on earth would do such a thing?!?! So, thumbs up for that. I completely disagree on your reaction about Simone. Most people commented on that bit already. Just realize that this band knows exactly what they're doing. Just watch some more and you'll know. I did laugh when you said Simone was gone and you were wondering why, but you didn't miss her. Well...., that's precisely why she was gone for a few minutes. To let the boys shine. The answer was hidden in your question. Then again, I understand it's not easy when your task is to comment on what you're seeing and hearing, but needing to pause continuously. I bet if you could just watch the show and listen to the song, time would fly by and you'd have a completely different experience. That's the burden of making reaction video's I guess. 😂 Have you ever rehearsed in a band, working on an outro of a song, needing to repeat four chords in two or four bars at least 16 times? And you have to do it over and over again, because someone fucks it up? That's when band members start to think "wait, this is freakin' boring!" But it's only boring because you're doing it maybe thirteen times before you get it right. This is basically the same thing. This is not the way you, or anyone else, should listen to music, but you have to do it, because this is what people expect you to do. Again, the burden of making reaction video's, hahaha... Keep it going. I like to watch this stuff. I love you, but you can also be freakin' annoying. Perfect combination! 😁

DH I think you’re being a little hard on the vocalist here lol. Consider the octave she was singing in the beginning of the song. That’s f’in hard to hit! Every singer has their own way about hitting the right note accurately live. Look at Layne Staley - he never moved on stage. Perhaps she felt that specific stance helped her channel it. She DID do some hair whips and headbangs up there too. She wasn’t THAT stationary. PLUS this is at the end of a 2 hour set!! Her disappearing for 3 min to come out for an encore was really well done in my mind. And in this encore, she wasn’t singing in that extremely high falsetto like she was in the beginning.

@@THEDavidHeretic Simone is definitely Epica’s lead singer and frontwoman. In this awesome band, however, she doesn’t need to get all the attention all the time as all the band members are very active on the stage and all are interacting with the crowd in shows. Anyhow she’s amazing on stage and studio and she brings the ultimate contrast with the growls and music in all possible ways like no one else can. She’s gracefully riding a metal beast.

I agree with the lead singer. I take into account that it's the last song on the setlist and her participation is limited on this track than on others. I've seen her give a great show but I can see her lacking energy at times. The rest of the bandmates need to accomodate for that lack of energy, which is fine. Thanks for this reaction 🙂👍 About Simone movements, I think this song is peculiar. First, usually, in most of their songs, Simone have 70 to 100% of the vocals, what is left, when there is, is for Mark. Here, it's the other way around. Second, I don't know how it would have been physically possible, at the beginning, for her, to sing in the front, go to the keyboardist to hand him the mic and go back in the front. At one point you have to make some choices in the choreography of a show. It is my humble opinion. 😉

My personal opinion? It's not Simone's fault. Mark Jansen, as talented as he is, is a control freak and has always undervalued his female collaborators. His first big band was with Floor Jansen (no relation) and she moved on because he was too limiting. He does get credit for giving Simone her start (she was 18 and his girlfriend and he put her up front when she might not have gotten the chance with other bandleaders). As much as I love Epica's big productions etc., I have always felt they under-utilized Simone's incredible presence and vocal talent.
