@Jonny Goulding Essence of Silence is a weird recommendation for this channel at this moment. I don't think Essence of Silence is what this reactor who is new to the genre would like... Especially compared to so many other Epica songs that are MUCH more gentle and easier to get into when you are not an experienced death metal fan. Essence of silence is the type of song I would recommend to the typical experienced deathmetal lover who has maybe checked out Nightwish and finds them a little on the soft and folky side. And is now checking out Epica and loves to hear more 'hardcore' symphonic metal songs.

After experiencing Floor and Simone, it's no time for more great Dutch female metal singers: A unique singer of her own is Sharon den Adel from „Within Temptation“. They are incredible as well. First songs to listen to might be „And we run feat. Xzibit“ (symphonic metal meets rap), „Paradise (What Bout us) feat. Tarja“ (the first singer of Nightwish), „Angels“, „Ice Queen“, „Stand my Ground“.... Charlotte Wessels formerly from „Delain“ is the next to explore: „Masters of Destiny“ is a must. Delain did a couple of songs with Marco from Nightwish like „Sing to me feat. Marco Hietala“ Anneke van Giersbergen (former from The Gathering) did a great duet with Sharon den Adel: Within Temptation „Somewhere“ together with a full orchestra. One of the most beautiful duets ever. Another symphonic metal band to mention is Xandria from Germany. They had for some time another awesome Dutch singer: Dianne van Giersbergen. Try „Nightfall“.

When I first discovered Epica, the growling kind of scared me as well, but the more I listened to them the more I got comfortable with it. Mark uses growls in appropriate moments, but always has a nice balance with Simone’s bright classical tones.

Glad you are looking at Epica too! Fantastic band! Simone Simons is the lead singer. She's also a cosmetics model - helps with the haircare! Love her red hair! Beauty and the Beast, hey!? Paradiso was a great venue. Check out anything by the band Delain performing there! Another female singer - Charlotte Wessels - at the time. They had a member of Nightwish sing with them too - and it wasn't Floor!.... Simone's husband is in the band Kamelot - their live work, such as "live at the 013" is outstanding and they have guest singers too - including Charlotte! Simone sang a duet with Kamelot too.

Simone Simons is in top of the top 10, of the female super vocalist, coming from the Metal world, but actually capable of doing almost anything!! These are highly skilled and talented storytellers, raised in the tough male Metal world - but have raised far beyond their male competitors, when in comes to singing, crowd control and charisma - and core techniques. They are phenomenal - and their fanbase loves them all dearly. Fun fact: Arjen Lucassen from Ayreon have found many of them, and brought them together in duets and choruses - along with most of the top of male metal singers as well. Nice reaction to another great symphonic metal band. You saw them doing "Sancta Terra" with Floor. But here you see that they can shine on their own. I hope you'll do more Epica. Although this video has been published not long ago, it was recorded many years ago - in 2006. Last year Epica celebrated their 20th Anniversary with a show in Tilburg. I was there! 💕 Even if the growling shocked you a bit here, maybe you see that it makes a nice contrast to Simones voice. I'd see it as an addition to the harsh instrumentation. it's an old concert, it's just that it was released on dvd only recently. Not the best Epica song, now they make a little different music and their new sound is much better. Like Simone's vocals, it has changed significantly. She recently sang with Apocalyptica, a cello metal band, and their song together is just stunningly beautiful. In it you can hear the new vocals of Simone in all its glory. In addition, the video for this song is simply mesmerizing: Apocalyptica & Epica - Rise again

@@thequestionqueens Hello. Please do more Epica asap. 🙂 "Sensorium" is a beautiful song. Relatively simple for Epica standards, but still beautiful. This performance is from 2006. Simone was only 21 here and her voice was absolutely stunning. I mean her head voice (operatic). I've never heard anything like that before. She was only a beginner in classical singing but she sounded very unique, unlike any other singer I know. And she's absolutely gorgeous too. Simone is a goddess in metal. You definitely need to hear and see more. I would suggest "Unleashed (Official Live)" for your next reaction. It's from 2013, the 10th anniversary concert with a live orchestra and choir on stage. "Sancta Terra" was from the same concert and you really liked it. For more Simone, something from 2022: Apocalyptica & Epica - Rise Again (Official video). Her voice is incredible, you should be able to hear the difference from the voice you listened to in this reaction. 😉

Simone Simons is a great singer. Saw Epica last year in NYC. I'm a sucker for great vocalists (It's one of the reasons why I'm also a Dear). Fun fact: Floor and Simone were roommates in college. I love symphonic metal, well also regular metal too. Floor did sing a song with Epica called Sancta Terra. That's an awesome performance. I also need to see Nightwish live too. Ive seen Within Temptation (also a great vocalist driven band), but so many symphonic metal bands I have to see. So many across the pond. Great reaction by the way. One of my all time favorite songs and renditions of Epica is "Consign to Oblivion" live from the Zenith in Paris. But be aware, there's a bunch of growling within the song and the roller coaster is going wilder. But never "aggressive" 🙂 And it starts with "The Wall of Epica" which is of course not the original name of what the audience was doing there ;-)

The Day that the world breaks down from Ayreon also features Simone, and Floor many Ayreon songs intruduced us to new artists and both Floor and Simone even Floor's sister Irene have all appeared in Ayreon and Arjen's music. Epica is epic and has many heavy growly parts so strong and intense there music can be and Simone's clean and classical vocals. I don't know why when they growl i think of bloodthirsty Vikings running to battle lead by a Siren vocalised Viking Queen.

Floor. and Simone are really good friends and have the up most respect for one another. In my eyes those 2 sirens are the greatest symphonic metal singer's today. There are others that are up there with them (Sharon from Within Temptation, Tarja and Annette both ex NW singers) however these two are in my eyes a league of there own. Epica are fantastic but it is amazing how they have gone up several notches since this performance, good as it is. In particular Simone’s voice has matured beyond recognition from this performance. In short, she started classical training aged 15 and trained for 5 or 6 years I think. That said she was learning on the job as she joined Epica aged 17. Symphonic Metal is a genre greater than Nightwish, though they are a great band and a good entry point into that type of music. Within Temptation is one you should sample next. One outstanding characteristic of all of these bands is the overall talent level, not just the vocalists as shown by their live preformances.

Hi Debbie, so much to say. Every day I wake up hoping you’ve released another reaction video. You are a breath of fresh air and a delight to listen to. I’ve only been down the Symphonic Metal rabbit hole since about March 2020 (just when Covid lockdown started so couodn’t have been better timing!!), first with Nightwish (thanks Spotify!) and then other bands like Within Temptation and without doubt Epica. As has been pointed out, this is an old video released recently, since then the drummer lead guitar and bass player have changed. Simone, Mark Jansen (guitar and vocals) and Coen Janssen (keyboards) remain. The sound is as good now, if not better, than it ever was. I too was a little disconcerted by Mark’s growls and screams but has been mentioned they always have a point and more often than not overlaid by Simone’s beautiful melodies. The entire Retrospect show (a special for their 10 year anniversary is great and has some special moments, not least the two duets with Floor. They also have a second special called Omega Alive, released during Covid. Both these shows are available on KZbin. Please see the recommendations for more Epica below. My all time favourite track is one of theirs, called Universal Death Squad. Look out for the lyric video. As for Floor, I cannot sing her praises loud enough or long enough. Obviously her work with Nightwish is fantastic, as are her solo tracks. Please look out for her Beste Zangers performances (a Dutch singing show). You did try and react to Phantom of the Opera I can’t help with why there were issues with that. Floor particularly did a fantastic version of Shallow (Lady Gaga) on the show. Also she appeared on the German equivalent version of Beste Zangers called Sing Meinen Song. I’m afraid there are no videos on KZbin for this (the German rights holder is very tight fisted) but all her performances there blew the other participants away week after week, they were in awe of her talent, vocal range and beauty (inner and outer). Also look for her versions of “Let it Go” and “Into the Unknown” (Disney Frozen songs), which she did because her daughter was singing them round the house. Heart’s “Alone”, “Adagio” (Laura Fabian?) and others all released in her own KZbin channel. Her talent knows no bounds. Sorry this is so long, it is lovely to see your reactions because they mirror my own. Please don’t stop. PS - I do get jealous when you react to other artists (never quite got into Dimash), but that’s my problem not yours 😁 PPS - I’ve never managed to get into Jinjer. When I listen to Nightwish, they are my favourite band. Then I listen to Epica, and they are my favourite band 😂. Floor Jansen, Simone Simons, Sharon del Adel (Within Temptation), Charlotte Wessels (formerly Delain, now on her own), and the woman who inspired them: Anneke van Giersbergen, are just five of the top female metal/rock vocalists of the Netherlands. And there are many more: Marcela Bovio (technically Mexican but longtime Dutch resident, working a lot with Arjen Lucassen on his projects, including Ayreon), or Zora Cock of Blackbiar, to name just 2 more. As a German, I can almost envy the Dutch for these ladies, despite us having some great female rock/metal vocalists of our own. So much to discover for the lost little duckling. 🖤🤘🏻

Lovely reaction. Glad you enjoyed SImone SImons beautiful voice. Yes they do have some death metal growls in some of their songs (that is band founder Mark Jansen) but always appropriate. This style of combining beautiful female classical trained vocals with male heavy dark vocals is called "beauty and the beast". Watched the livestream of their 20th anniversary concert back in September and then saw them live with Sabaton a few weeks latter in Boston. Both were amazing concerts. My current favorites are her collaboration with Apocalyptica, Rise Again, the live performance of Rivers from Chile (incredible visuals), and the song Sirens- of blood and water. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaeqgmCnbsyrbJo. It is from their Alchemy EP they released recently which is a number of songs where they collaborate with other bands. Sirens is inspired by the original, non Disney, Little Mermaid fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. As you found out yourself, good (!) headphones make a huge difference! Symphonic Metal usually has a lot of instruments playing at the same time. So with small crappy speakers everything just mushes together. I think you use airpods. They are OK. The sound quality of youtube is quite bad anyway. Listening the same music from CD or as uncompressed audio makes it even better, but sadly there it lacks the visuals - so the actually best experience (besides being there in person) is from Bluray. (Most of the videos you have reacted to, originate from the BD versions, but got compressed at upload).

Really glad you liked this! In the days before I really enjoyed growling (pre-Tatiana) I listened to a lot of Epica. Simone is great and the bassist rocks. They use growling very sparingly as a special effect or counterpoint and it was as much as I could cope with. Nowadays I'm much more open to a bit of growling, done well. The problem I find is that more often I want heavier stuff than I used to, now I've discovered that it hits different. Also, I'm still hoping you'll gather up your courage and try "Wallflower" OMV by Jinjer. Fingers crossed!

Hi Debbie, like you I am not a fan of growling. After listening to Epica's Sancta Terra, my second song was Consign to Oblivion. At first I wasn't a fan of it at all, because Mark has a long growl time in it, but the more I listened to Epica and Mark, the better I liked the music. I can imagine that it happens to you too, looking forward to more Epica songs from you, my suggestion has already been mentioned. Suggest you try listening to Beth Hart singing "Am I The One" live at the same venue -Paradiso. Don't worry, she doesn't growl, but she does almost everything else. Afraid you might need to bleep out a couple of choice words if you want to keep the channel family friendly.
